Iowa City Takes Down Street Kiosks And Plans to Take Another

By

Article By Myles Ackman Two weeks ago—on September 22—city workers were seen across town extracting kiosk poles from the ground—the boards that you generally see around town crowded with posters—including one that previously stood outside China Star on South Clinton Street. People took to social media platforms such as Reddit to voice their concerns, with one post receiving 79 comments. Although local events can be found online, not all are promoted digitally. Some communities and event organizers rely on flyer displays to reach Iowa City residents. KRUI received the following response after reaching out to the city for comment.  “The … Continued

Opinion: The University of Iowa must do more to protect its marching band and performers

By

When a student dies under the university’s watch, it should become the concern of the entire student body. That is why, despite not being a member of the Hawkeye Marching Band or a student-athlete, I write today to call for more robust protocols and protections in the future to safeguard the health of some of the most dedicated and hardworking student-athletes on campus: the Hawkeye Marching Band.  It’s worth comparing what happened on September 5th to a similar tragedy that happened recently at Arizona State. This involved a draft pick, Matthew Mayich, who collapsed from heat exhaustion during an intense … Continued

September 14, No New Jail Show

By

As far back as my first punk show as an Iowa City resident, I would continue to hear calls to action to vote against a bill being proposed to spend $125 million on building a new jail within Johnson County. It seemed like a persistent issue with little in the way of progress, as those with any power to stop it were refusing to listen to the pleas of concerned citizens. So when I saw the announcement of a show to protest this very bill, I knew it was something I couldn’t miss out on.  In collaboration with Johnson County … Continued

This Is THE Year!

By

Every year is THE year a team believes  they can reach the ultimate goal-a championship. Regardless of a team’s performance in the previous year or the hardships they may currently face, fans believe it’s possible. With opening-day for Major League Baseball earlier this week, there was a wide spread of that “this is the year” feeling. What fan base had the strongest feeling of it though? The same fan base that’s had their hopes brought up only to be ruined for over 100 years. There are only 9 teams in the MLB that haven’t won a championship: the San Diego … Continued

With 15 days of games left in the NBA season the race for the final playoffs push is getting heated up especially in the western conference. Although seeds 1-7 may be already given and may endure small changes the west 8th spot is still wide open. The Utah Jazz, the Los Angeles Lakers, and the Dallas Mavericks are still in contention for the last playoff spot. The Jazz holds a ½ game lead over the Lakers and 1 and ½ over the Mavericks. The Lakers are trying to make that last playoff push trying to avoid having an even horrible … Continued

By Mark Freie In the NFL, if you perform on the field and win, you get paid. 2013 NFL Draft: Most Overrated Players

By

Every year when breaking down prospects for the NFL draft, there are certain prospects which I do not understand why they are ranked so high. Here are three players to be cautious about before drafting. 3. Ryan Nassib Nassib was a very efficient passer in his time at Syracuse. He racked up over 9,000 passing yards in his college career. Nassib seems to be a smart quarterback who gets through his progressions effectively. He posses intangibles that will translate to the next level. However, Nassib has a few mechanical issues. His footwork is highly inconsistent, especially when he is under … Continued

The Nature of the Bracket

By

Sports fans fill out brackets. If you’re interested in sports at all, you fill out a bracket. Ranging from the die hard season ticket holders, to the high school gym teachers who just want something to gamble on. Everyone suddenly becomes basketball fans in March, we all know that. Everyone revolves their life around basketball—it’s the nature of bracketology. . And everyone hates upsets. But from November to February, we want every underdog to win. We loved when Duke, Michigan, or Indiana lost. Not because we hated those teams, but simply because we loved the upsets. We love to storm … Continued

Miami Heat Maintain the Flame

By

Monday March 25, the Miami Heat took on the Orlando Magic in a game that ended with final score of 108-94, Miami. This game marks the Heat’s 27th straight win and there’s no sign of them slowing down. The Heat are a team that either everyone loves to hate or has intense adoration for, there simply is no in between. Even though I am a part of the “Heat Hate” group I must give credit where it is due. From a facts and performance standpoint, opinions aside, there just is no other team in the NBA doing what Miami is. … Continued
