Music Staff Picks: The Best Releases of April

billy woods – Aethiopes On Aethiopes, billy woods reestablishes his strengths as a storyteller, with help from producer Preservation’s experimentally jazzy beats. By now, woods has cemented himself as one of hip hop’s greatest writers, and his brooding yet clever introspection sounds especially powerful over Preservation’s musical backdropping. Samples of pianos will twinkle across some tracks, and pound discordantly on others, while electric guitars ring and horns blow. By the time the harmonica enters the equation, the beats here are unparalleled. It is an enveloping atmosphere completed by excellent percussion, which moves between hand drums, full kits, and shuffling jangles … Continued

Evander Kane is set to move from the Winnipeg Jets to the Buffalo Sabres after the teams agreed to a trade Wednesday morning.  The Jets will trade Kane, defenseman Zach Bogosian, and goalie prospect Jason Kasdorf to the Sabres in return for defenseman Tyler Myers, winger Drew Stafford, prospects Joel Armia and Brendan Lemieux, and a first round pick. Hawkeyes shooting woes continue against Iowa State. By Mark Freie (@markfreie) IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Iowa State Cyclones (7-1) saw five different players reach double-digit scoring totals in their 90-75 win over the Iowa Hawkeyes (8-3) on Friday night. Cyclone junior Naz Long led all scorers for the Cyclones with 21 points including five 3-point shots. Hawkeyes head coach Fran McCaffery gave praise to Fred Hoiberg and the Cyclones. “This is a good Iowa State team who has a ton of playmakers,” McCaffery said. “[Abdel] Nader was one of those guys who really impacted the game for them tonight.” … Continued

Week 6 of college football proved once again that the top teams are not invincible. This weekend Alabama, Oregon, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, and UCLA all lost their games, making it the first time that five teams in the top eight lost in the same week. The chance that an undefeated team with make it to the inaugural College Football Playoff has now gone down dramatically. Two of these losses were to unranked teams, with Oregon falling 31-24 to Arizona and UCLA losing in the final minute to Utah. UCLA even had a chance to win in the final minute since they … Continued

The most prestigious of the annual individual player awards in the NBA is, without question, the Most Valuable Player award. This season’s crop of candidates for the Maurice Podoloff MVP trophy include the likes of LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Chris Paul, to name a few. However, I’m more intrigued by the outcome of another annual award, the Comeback Player of the Year. After a season (and postseason) full of devastating long-term injuries to star players throughout the league, the 2013-2014 Comeback Player of the Year race will quite possibly be more thrilling than the MVP battle. Here are some … Continued

After Wednesday night’s victory against the Edmonton Oilers, the Chicago Blackhawks have clinched this year’s Presidents’ Trophy. The Presidents’ Trophy is awarded to the team with the most points, and hence the best team of the regular season. Even if the Blackhawks lose their remaining two games of the regular season no team can overcome them in points. Now some will rejoice this achievement, while others may not be as quick to celebrate. It makes sense to believe this is a good omen of what is to come in the playoffs. If the Blackhawks play the way they did during … Continued
