On November 12, Nuovo Testamento graced Iowa City with their music live at The James Theater as a part of The Englert Theatre’s Track Zero concert series. I attended the concert that night, fully ready to boost a move myself.
Local Iowa City band Twin River Revivalist put on a great show last Halloweekend. With songs that can charge up any crowd, their next show at Elray’s this Friday, Dec. 5th is sure to be a good one.
I sat down with multi-instrumentalists Jano Rix before his gig with The Wood Brothers at The Englert Theatre on November 12th. On Friday, February 28th, National Theatre Live had a live broadcast of Donmar Warehouse’s production of Coriolanus at the Englert. Coriolanus, one of Shakespeare’s last plays, tells the tale of a proud Roman war hero who returns home after defeating his archrival, the Volscian ruler Aufidius, and attempts to translate his success in the battlefield to the political sphere. However, Coriolanus is too proud to speak to the public and beg them for votes. He first feigns a favorable opinion of the people, but cannot withhold it to advance his campaign. Every band, especially a singer-songwriter, should be able to produce a sense of prestige and conviction while on stage. Mason Jennings’s performance Saturday, October 5th at The Englert succeeded in both of these aspects, as he sailed through a menagerie of melodic, guitar and piano based tracks. He quickly jumped into his set, with the crowd anxiously awaiting his presence. Within the first few songs, Jennings built a lot of respect from the crowd.
