During the new Stop/Time Festival on April 4th, I had the pleasure of attending a reading by acclaimed poet Danez Smith at the Englert Theatre.

After listening to a lot of jazz over the past week, culminating in an amazing performance by renowned trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire and the PUBLIQuartet last Friday at the Stop/Time Festival presented by Hancher Auditorium, I’ve come to the conclusion that most jazz isn’t meant for an audience at all.

Every band, especially a singer-songwriter, should be able to produce a sense of prestige and conviction while on stage. Mason Jennings’s performance Saturday, October 5th at The Englert succeeded in both of these aspects, as he sailed through a menagerie of melodic, guitar and piano based tracks. He quickly jumped into his set, with the crowd anxiously awaiting his presence. Within the first few songs, Jennings built a lot of respect from the crowd. Friday night may have been a tad more chilly than we’ve been used to in Iowa City, but that didn’t stop people from enjoying the 90’s cult classic Office Space in City Park. The film was played on September 21st as part of the Starlite Cinema, an open-air cinema experience. Not only did everyone get to enjoy the classic comedy, they also got the opportunity to destroy an office printer before the film (which was inspired by the scene from the film).
