Around the Big Ten: Week 10

By

It’s been a minute since we last checked in on the Big Ten, but a few general trends have continued over the past couple of weeks. Michigan and Oregon keep spiraling, UCLA and Indiana keep winning, and here in Iowa City, the Hawkeyes seem to be more of a week-to-week thing. Let’s check out some of the biggest games coming up in this first weekend of November.

KRUI’s Homecoming Weekend

By

KRUI In The Homecoming Parade By Kade Grierson | Photos by Cael Ferguson It was the night before Halloween, which is the day before the national college student hangover day known as All Saints’ Day. I’d been walking out the door talking to a friend on the phone who told me to “break a leg” when I told them I was going to march in a parade. According to OurIowaHeritage the first homecoming parade was in 1917 with horse-drawn floats. Which would make this homecoming parade a hundred and something—it’s difficult to track down which homecoming parades were canceled due … Continued

Where Will LeBron Go?

By

LeBron James is set to be a free agent this coming summer. The question that everyone has been asking is simple: where will he go? If reports are accurate, only four choices are plausible: a return to Cleveland, or a departure to the 76ers, the Rockers, or the Lakers. Let us examine the pros and cons of each potential move. Staying in Cleveland Pros: Staying in Cleveland would allow LeBron James to stay in his hometown for what would likely be the remainder of his career. This would allow him to theoretically win several more NBA titles back to his … Continued

Melo out of New York?

By

With a little more than half of the NBA season in the books, we are already seeing talks about where Carmelo Anthony will play next season. As we already know, he will most likely test the free agent market. Now, it just a matter of where will he go. It’s been speculated that Anthony might actually stay in New York with the Knicks, or he might go to Los Angeles and team up with Kobe and the Lakers, or even find his way to Chicago and team up with Derrick Rose and the Bulls. We could see Anthony stating the … Continued

NBA Year of the Comeback

By

The most prestigious of the annual individual player awards in the NBA is, without question, the Most Valuable Player award. This season’s crop of candidates for the Maurice Podoloff MVP trophy include the likes of LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Chris Paul, to name a few. However, I’m more intrigued by the outcome of another annual award, the Comeback Player of the Year. After a season (and postseason) full of devastating long-term injuries to star players throughout the league, the 2013-2014 Comeback Player of the Year race will quite possibly be more thrilling than the MVP battle. Here are some … Continued

Post All-Star Break: Teams that Need to Improve

By

The season has finally gotten to the half way point and it has been nicer to some teams more than others. There have been a lot of ups and downs this season half way through, but there are some teams that have not gotten it done. These four teams make my list of teams that desperately need a change of pace in the second half. 1. Los Angeles Lakers Alright, I will say this topic has been beat over the head well after it died, but that does not change the fact that the struggling Lakers have a great deal to improve … Continued

Trouble in LA?

By

When are the Lakers going to get it together? Remember at the start of the NBA season when the Lakers was struggling? Remember when the Lakers started the season off with a 1-4 record, which made the Los Angeles Lakers decide to fire their head coach Mike Brown. Now look at where they are. With the first month of the season done, the Lakers record stands at 11-14. Since the Lakers fired Mike Brown and having Mike D’Antoni as their head coach their record is 10-10. This is still not where anybody expected the Lakers to be at this point … Continued

D-Rose for MVP

By

By Jordan Kabialis  “From Chicago, At Guard, 6’3”, #1…” With twenty games left in the NBA regular season, talk will continue to increase over who the league MVP should be. One problem with that is there is no clear-cut definition as to what the MVP is.  Many people will say that it is the player with the best statistics. Some will say that the MVP must come from an “elite” team,  some will just give it to the guy whose name is the biggest. I’ve got a definition for everyone: Derrick Rose. You might be saying to yourself, “Dude, this guy’s … Continued
