After Coach Fran McCaffery stated that junior Melsahn Basabe had earned a starting spot on the roster, Basabe was put to use, replacing Anthony Clemmons as a starter. Now that he has started four games, we can examine some of his play and judge the move. Iowa is 2-2 in those games with the two losses coming against a ranked Minnesota team and a double overtime loss in Madison, Wisconsin against the Badgers. He’s averaging 21 minutes now, not far from where he was before. One thing about his stat line’s that has changed though is his FGA. The presence … Continued
Former Virginia defensive coordinator Jim Reid is reportedly interviewing at Iowa today. The interview was first reported over the weekend by 247Sports. On Friday night, FootballScoop.com tweeted that Reid — along with former Colorado receivers coach Bobby Kennedy — “will likely join the staff.” Reid was fired Dec. 2 as associate head coach and defensive coordinator at Virginia; the Cavaliers went 4-8 in 2012. Reid led the Cavaliers to a No. 31 national ranking in total defense at 353 yards per game. The question is where does Reid fit in on the Iowa coaching staff. Head coach Kirk Ferentz has announced … Continued
With the 2014 FIFA World drawing closer International teams all over the world are preparing and practicing in hopes to Qualify, including the United States Mens National Team (USMNT). However, the chances for the USMNT to qualify are not looking so bright after a sickening 2-1 loss to Honduras last Wednesday which proposes the question is it a lack of experience or a lack of talent that made the USMNT look so horrendous in Honduras. The US is by no means considered a top soccer country in the world on the mens side, but they still are expected by many to … Continued
The Big Ten dual titles have come naturally for the Iowa wrestling team. It’s the tournament championships that have eluded the Hawkeyes. Devyn Marble is hurt. At least, we thought so. There has been talks all week about Marble and his turf toe injury and if this was slowing him down at all. He put all the speculation to rest with his 21 point outburst Saturday night in Iowa City where he led the Hawkeyes to a 71-57 win over the Northwestern Wildcats. Marble wasted no time getting in on the action as he started the game off with a monster dunk to give the Hawkeyes the lead. “He was spectacular,” Fran McCaffery said of Marble’s play. Spectacular indeed, Marble followed up … Continued
With all apologies to those with February birthdays, the second month of the calendar year can be pretty dreary. Following the Super Bowl and the end of football, fans are still knee deep in snow in many cities, along with whipping winds and invincible black ice. While hockey and basketball are great, we still have another month before March Madness and two months before April, which yields spring, Opening Day in baseball and the Masters. What February does bring (besides myriad Subway promotions) is the first hopes for warmer weather and sunshine. No, it is not the groundhogs doing, but … Continued
Drugs and Baseball. The two words are becoming synonymous with each other. This NBA season has been a difficult one for the Boston Celtics. Coming into the 2012-2013 season the Celtics had high hopes of a deep playoff run despite losing three point specialist guard Ray Allen, who left in the offseason for the defending champions Miami Heat. To replace Allen they brought in Courtney Lee, Jason Terry, and they still had guard Avery Bradley who was sidelined due to a shoulder injury. The season looked so bright for the Boston Celtics. Now two weeks before the All-Star break the Celtics stand at a record of 24-23 which is 8th in the … Continued
