Riot Fest Gallery

Riot Fest just wrapped a successful, yet muddy weekend in Chicago. From September 18-20, over a hundred thousand people graced the grounds, later mud pit, of Douglass Park. Here are some of my favorite selects from the weekend.

A Michigan Odyssey

Initially, I wanted to write a story about what it was like to step into the Big House for the very first time. Then our travel plans went south, and then the game itself happened. So instead of just one story, this is a collection of tales from one of the craziest weekends of all time.

Around the Big Ten – Week Four

Week three of college football was the final tune-up for the Big Ten before the conference schedule began. This week, we’ll talk about Iowa’s 55-0 victory over Northern Iowa, Northwestern’s final game before moving into Ryan Field, and the Southern California showdown between USC and Oregon.

IOWA CITY- The Iowa Hawkeyes (4-2) forced a poor shooting night to top the Northern Illinois Huskies (2-1) by a score of 70-49 in front of a crowd of 14,357 on Wednesday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The Iowa lead was sparked by an early 16-0 Hawkeye run, capped off by an Aaron White dunk with 11:17 remaining in the first half to give the Hawkeyes a 20-6 lead. It was once again the Iowa defense who wrote the story for the Hawkeyes as they pulled off their second straight victory and stayed perfect at home (4-0) in the 2014 campaign. Iowa … Continued

The one-and-done culture of college basketball raises questions about the priorities of college programs. IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa president Sally Mason made news earlier this week when she sounded off on her alma mater. Mason, who graduated from the University of Kentucky, told The Des Moines Register about her concerns. “I’m not proud of my alma mater, that has a wonderful record of winning basketball championships, with students who stay one year to play basketball and are done — the one-and-done,” Mason said While John Calipari and the Kentucky Wildcats look to run rampant through the 2014-2015 … Continued

IOWA CITY- The Hawkeyes (3-2) overcame a slow start to close out the Pepperdine Waves (3-1) on Monday night at Carver Hawkeye Arena. Iowa scored the first basket of the game and never trailed as they came away with a 72-61 victory. Aaron White yet again paved the way for the Hawkeyes, leading Iowa with 17 points. The senior added nine rebounds and an assist. The post size for Iowa proved to be too much as Pepperdine could not quite overcome the early deficit. The Waves hung with the Hawkeyes throughout, trailing by just five at halftime and slimming the … Continued

IOWA CITY, Iowa–The 14th ranked Wisconsin Badgers traveled to Kinnick Stadium Saturday to take on the Iowa Hawkeyes, not only for the rights to the Heartland Trophy, but also for a shot to represent the Big Ten West in Indianapolis at the Big Ten title game. Although Iowa outscored Wisconsin 21 to 10 in the second half, the Hawkeyes fell short, losing 26-24. With a victory over rival Minnesota next week, Wisconsin will clinch the Big Ten West Title. The biggest difference in this game was the play of Melvin Gordon, the dynamic Badger back who rushed for 200 yards … Continued

Iowa City, IOWA- The University of Iowa Women’s Basketball team won its opening game of The Hawkeye challenge on Friday 97-68 over a pesky Pepperdine Waves squad. Ally Disterhoft got The Hawks off to another quick start, scoring the team’s first five points en route to her fourth career double-double: she finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds. However, The Lady Hawkeyes were challenged by The Waves in the first half as they were unable to pull away. Pepperdine was able to knock down some tough contested shots as well as connect on the open looks they did have … Continued

The Iowa Hawkeyes came out and took control for the entire meet today at the Iowa City Duals. No mercy was shown as the Hawks defeated Baker College 55-0, Iowa Central 49-3, and Cornell College 55-0. The domination that was present can be expressed in any number of ways as far as the statistics go: the hawkeyes had 19 falls and another 6 technical falls in 30 matches, half of Iowa’s matches ended with a pin in the 1st period, and the hawkeyes even had a win by injury default due to sophomore Sammy Brooks taking down Baker’s Bryant Guillen … Continued
