Riot Fest just wrapped a successful, yet muddy weekend in Chicago. From September 18-20, over a hundred thousand people graced the grounds, later mud pit, of Douglass Park. Here are some of my favorite selects from the weekend.
Initially, I wanted to write a story about what it was like to step into the Big House for the very first time. Then our travel plans went south, and then the game itself happened. So instead of just one story, this is a collection of tales from one of the craziest weekends of all time.
Mutliple teams from the old Big Ten West come out with upset victories in the first full week of the Big Ten conference schedule. Ryan Paris recaps the major storylines from the last week, as well as some of the biggest games coming up.

Hawkeyes must look past shooting woes and focus on Big Ten schedule. By Mark Freie IOWA CITY, Iowa – After splitting a pair of games against the Ohio State Buckeyes in the 2013-2014 season, the Iowa Hawkeyes (9-4) will begin Big Ten play against the Buckeyes (11-2) in their final game of the 2014 year on Tuesday. Iowa travels to Columbus, Ohio with the memories of a non-conference schedule that tested 5th year head coach Fran McCaffery and his players. “We pride ourselves into really competing. We amped up our non-conference schedule,” McCaffery said following an 80-70 win over North … Continued
IOWA CITY – The Hawkeyes seemingly just needed something positive to go their way following two consecutive losses to in-state foes Iowa State and UNI. They got that on Monday night with an 80-70 hard-fought win over North Florida. There was a rare change to Iowa’s starting lineup as sophomore Peter Jok got the nod at shooting guard over the injured Anthony Clemmons, who did play six minutes off the bench before spraining his other ankle and leaving the game for good. Jok made the most of his start, scoring 12 points on two of four from 3-point range in … Continued
Hawkeyes shooting woes continue against Iowa State. By Mark Freie (@markfreie) IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Iowa State Cyclones (7-1) saw five different players reach double-digit scoring totals in their 90-75 win over the Iowa Hawkeyes (8-3) on Friday night. Cyclone junior Naz Long led all scorers for the Cyclones with 21 points including five 3-point shots. Hawkeyes head coach Fran McCaffery gave praise to Fred Hoiberg and the Cyclones. “This is a good Iowa State team who has a ton of playmakers,” McCaffery said. “[Abdel] Nader was one of those guys who really impacted the game for them tonight.” … Continued
The (8-2) Iowa Hawkeyes and the Alcorn State Braves (1-6) tipped off tonight inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Aaron White bobble head night. Entering tonight’s game, the Hawkeyes, as a 30-point favorite, looked to get their 400th win inside Carver-Hawkeye, and they did just that, defeating the Braves 67-44. Aaron White did what he normally does, leading the Hawkeyes in scoring with 15 points, getting nine of those points from the free throw line. “He’s got an incredible ability to get there in a variety of different ways,” head coach Fran McCaffery said. “We can post him up, we can get him … Continued
The Iowa Hawkeye football team (7-5) is headed to Jacksonville, Florida. This afternoon, Iowa Athletic Director Gary Barta along with head coach Kirk Ferentz, accepted a bowl invitation to play the Tennessee Volunteers (6-6) in TaxSlayer Bowl on January 2nd at 2:30pm central time at EverBank Field. “It’s a thrill for us to be going to the TaxSlayer Bowl,” Barta said. “This is a great opportunity for our students, and for our seniors to have another opportunity to go out and play and play against a historic program.” Iowa’s name got thrown around in the mix for a couple of … Continued
Carver-Hawkeye Arena was packed with ugly sweaters tonight as the Hawkeyes beat B1G rival Michigan State 37-0
IOWA CITY- After traveling to Chapel Hill, N.C. and upsetting the 12th ranked Tar Heels on the road, the Iowa Hawkeyes (6-2) looked to win their 5th straight when the University of Maryland-Baltimore County Retrievers (0-7) visited Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Sparked by Peter Jok’s two three pointers and an Aaron White thunderous dunk, Iowa got out to a 20 to 6 lead, which came on a 20-0 Hawkeye run. Iowa’s stout defense forced the Retrievers into 15 first half turnovers and the Hawkeyes took advantage, scoring 23 of their 48 first half points off of the Retriever’s mistakes. Iowa took a … Continued

In the words of Iowa’s head wrestling coach Tom Brands, the hawkeyes went through a “trial by baptism” tonight in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The #1 ranked Hawks took the challenge head on though and routed the #15 Iowa State Cyclones 28-8. It was an intense and exciting night. Even though the team score ended up a little lop-sided, seven of the ten matches were settled with decisions. The clear cut domination that Iowa displayed last week in the Iowa City duals was not quite as obvious against the more competitive cyclones. And rivalries flare when the cyclones come to town. At … Continued
