A Team of Dreamers

For nine days, an unlikely cast of Hawkeyes made the world believe. They made themselves believe. The team of dreamers, and an unforgettable run in March.

Three NFL weeks have passed – please, slow down – and there are some teams that find themselves hot out of the gate, while others are still playing as if it’s the preseason. Remember, the games in September count just as much as the games in December. Here’s the first edition of Three Up, Three Down. The three up doesn’t necessarily mean those are the best three teams, and likewise for the three down not always being the worst teams. Three Up 1. Peyton Manning and the 3-0 Denver Broncos. They were expected to be good….but this good? The addition … Continued

Let’s forget for a moment that the Minnesota Vikings came into their home matchup against the Cleveland Browns 0-2 and applaud the Browns for the upset they pulled off in the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. When two winless teams meet up, it is hard to call the result an upset, but in the case it is the perfect description. It is no secret that the being a fan of any Cleveland team is not easy, especially when it comes to the Browns.  2013 is proving to be more of the same Browns fans. The team started the season 0-2 and … Continued

In a game that could have been over once Jacob Hillyer caught a 21-yard touchdown with 1:54 left in the 1st quarter, the Iowa Hawkeyes chased the Western Michigan Broncos out of Kinnick Stadium with a 59-3 victory. Western Michigan had won the previous two matchups in Iowa City but the Hawkeyes made sure the streak would end today. Iowa is now 3-1 heading into their Big Ten Conference opener in Minnesota next Saturday. Kevonte Martin-Manley led the rout with 184 total punt return yards. After returning his first punt of the game 44 yards to set up Iowa’s first … Continued

At the onset, the beginning of year #2 is nothing but excitement. Following a freshmen campaign of uneasiness, unavoidable pitfall and the crushing hit of blindsided reality, the sophomore calendar, at its core, should feel easier. After all, surroundings are now familiar and schedule has become mundane. Sure the expectations are understandably raised, but hey, at least the growing pains are over. Aren’t they? While I’m sure there are millions of sophomores around the country that hold this thought process nearly a month into their sequel campaigns (or at the onset, hello quarter system!), there are four cities that undoubtedly … Continued

How bad has the Colorado Football Program been in the past seven years? Really bad. They have had zero winning seasons, have lost to two FCS teams, have made just one bowl game, and have been irrelevant throughout the College Football landscape. Mike MacIntyre has come from San Jose State and in his first season, has led the Buffs to their first 2-0 start since 2008. In doing so, they have doubled their win total from a season ago.   While Coach Mac has been huge in orchestrating a fast start in 2013, no one has been bigger than junior … Continued

It wasn’t easy, but for the first time since October 12th of last season, the Iowa Hawkeyes (1-1) heard a victorious fight song as they headed up the end zone tunnel at Kinnick Stadium Saturday. The Hawkeyes snapped a seven game losing streak in a 28-14 victory over the Missouri State Bears (0-2). The Hawkeyes second drive of the game was an effective one. An 11-play 69 –yard touchdown drive, capped off by Jake Rudock’s six yard touchdown run made it 7-0 Hawkeyes with 5:14 left in the first quarter. However, the Offense sputtered for the rest of the first … Continued

Thursday, September 5th marked the return of the NFL season. The Denver Broncos hosted the Baltimore Ravens at Sports Authority Field. The end result of the game may not have been what everyone was expecting. The Broncos’ quarterback, Peyton Manning, had an amazing season opener. After the first half the Broncos never looked back as Manning led them to a 49-27 victory over the Ravens. Manning’s performance was so impressive that he tied an NFL record with seven touchdown passes. This forty-four year old record-breaking number hadn’t been seen since Joe Kapp’s 1969 performance. The Broncos showed early struggles in … Continued

Geno Smith and EJ Manuel, two rookie quarterbacks, will find themselves thrust into starting roles when week one rolls around in about four days.  Smith will start for the New York Jets and Manuel will start for the Buffalo Bills. Smith finds himself starting after Mark Sanchez was banged up in the third preseason game and Manuel finds himself there after Kevin Kolb sustained a, what some people are calling, career threatening head injury. Both of these guys were big time college quarterbacks, Smith put up huge numbers at West Virginia and Manuel helped the Florida State Seminoles to an … Continued

The Iowa secondary had some real struggles this past season.  These struggles either lost close games with Central Michigan, or allowed Michigan to pile on the points. According to B.J. Lowery though, they’re doing laps around where they were one year ago. “We (the secondary) improved our game speed, we’re playing way faster than we did last year.” Lowery said while addressing the media Tuesday. One big part that the secondary will be missing this year is Micah Hyde, who has his dreams set on the NFL and will leave open not only a corner spot, but one of the … Continued
