Iowa women can’t overcome 20 point deficit, lose at No. 16 Colorado 90-87

After being down by as many as 20 in the first half, Iowa women’s basketball couldn’t battle back against the No. 16 ranked Colorado Buffaloes. Iowa ended up losing the game 90-87 despite the fact that Iowa played a sloppy first half in their first road game. Samantha Logic did everything in her power to try and give Iowa their first lead of the game late, but came up short finishing with 26 points, 6 assists. Despite foul struggles Iowa defeats Stony Brook 78-40

Iowa found themselves reaching deep on their bench for help after both Bethany Doolittle and Claire Till both had early fouls, but Iowa still defeated the Stony Brook Seawolves 78-40. “This is one of those game’s we were waiting for as far as the change in officiating,” Lisa Bluder said, “ We were kind of dreading and it came to fruition tonight.” Doolittle picked up two fouls within the first six minutes of the game and didn’t see action until the start of the second half, that required Iowa to go to freshman walk-on Hailey Schneden for nine minutes of … Continued

Iowa Women’s Basketball: Nicole Smith injury brings roster depth issues up early

Sophomore Nicole Smith is going to be sidelined after tearing her meniscus during the Hawkeyes exhibition win over Concordia. Smith didn’t seem to visibly injure it on the court, but according to Lisa Bluder the injury is in the “five percent that has to be sutured and that means the recovery process is longer.” The news of Nicole Smith’s injury is disheartening, especially considering the impact it will have on her season. Iowa women’s basketball report card after exhibition win against Concordia-St.Paul

Offense: B+ Iowa gave Bethany Doolittle 16 shots, more than double the next most attempts for the Hawkeyes. If Iowa is going to succeed this year they’re going to have to get the ball inside early and often, something they did very well against the undersized Concordia Bears. Faith, evidently, is something that Iowa does not have in kicker Mike Meyer. Meyer is 0-for-1 on 50+ FGs this season, but that was into the wind against Michigan State. Iowa found themselves twice around the 34-yard line and elected to hurry up punt it at the end of the first quarter, the second Iowa went for it on fourth and one and ended up stuffed at the line. Samantha Logic and Theairra Taylor selected as Iowa women’s basketball captains

Junior Samantha Logic and senior Theairra Taylor have been named captains for the 2013-2014 season for the Iowa women’s basketball team. Both are returning starters and both started all 34 games last year. “Theairra and Samantha are exceptional leaders and will serve as terrific role models for our young players.” Lisa Bluder said in a press release from Iowa Athletics.
