In a game that could have been over once Jacob Hillyer caught a 21-yard touchdown with 1:54 left in the 1st quarter, the Iowa Hawkeyes chased the Western Michigan Broncos out of Kinnick Stadium with a 59-3 victory. Western Michigan had won the previous two matchups in Iowa City but the Hawkeyes made sure the streak would end today. At the onset, the beginning of year #2 is nothing but excitement. Following a freshmen campaign of uneasiness, unavoidable pitfall and the crushing hit of blindsided reality, the sophomore calendar, at its core, should feel easier. After all, surroundings are now familiar and schedule has become mundane. Sure the expectations are understandably raised, but hey, at least the growing pains are over. Aren’t they? It wasn’t easy, but for the first time since October 12th of last season, the Iowa Hawkeyes (1-1) heard a victorious fight song as they headed up the end zone tunnel at Kinnick Stadium Saturday. The Hawkeyes snapped a seven game losing streak in a 28-14 victory over the Missouri State Bears (0-2). The Hawkeyes second drive of the game was an effective one. An 11-play 69 –yard touchdown drive, capped off by Jake Rudock’s six yard touchdown run made it 7-0 Hawkeyes with 5:14 left in the first quarter.
