In Conversation with “Dis/Comfort: Confronting Histories of African Art in the United States”

By

On October 15th, I had the pleasure of a guided tour through the student-curated art exhibition “Dis/Comfort,” created by a class that collaboratively uses a semester to build its own African art exhibit for the Stanley Museum, “Curating African Art for the American Museum.” Being who I am, naturally I wanted to highlight this extremely valuable opportunity to have a hand in professional curation for college students. For my class this semester, How to Write About Art, we were given the opportunity to have a guided class period through the exhibit with the help of two students who worked on … Continued

NFL Week 3: Three Up, Three Down

By

Three NFL weeks have passed – please, slow down – and there are some teams that find themselves hot out of the gate, while others are still playing as if it’s the preseason. Remember, the games in September count just as much as the games in December. Here’s the first edition of Three Up, Three Down. Manning Manhandles the Ravens

By

Thursday, September 5th marked the return of the NFL season. The Denver Broncos hosted the Baltimore Ravens at Sports Authority Field. The end result of the game may not have been what everyone was expecting. The Broncos’ quarterback, Peyton Manning, had an amazing season opener. After the first half the Broncos never looked back as Manning led them to a 49-27 victory over the Ravens. Manning’s performance was so impressive that he tied an NFL record with seven touchdown passes. This forty-four year old record-breaking number hadn’t been seen since Joe Kapp’s 1969 performance. The Broncos showed early struggles in … Continued

McDonald’s, the NFL and MLB

By

Forbes says that every day, despite the fact that healthier options exist, McDonalds serves 47 million people worldwide.  McDonald’s has mastered the art of figuring out and then giving people what they want.  Just like McDonald’s, the NFL is constantly trying to tweak its product to maximize profits.  Because of this aggressive business plan, the NFL will always be more popular than Major League Baseball.  The other half of this situation is that Major League Baseball, just like those healthier options, will always be better. NFL fans criticize MLB for a variety of reasons.  The game is too slow.  The … Continued

The Flag, the Colonel and the Redskins

By

This week the University of Mississippi’s men’s basketball team was eliminated from the NCAA men’s basketball tournament in the round of 32.  That fact is nothing remarkable.  What is remarkable; however, is the dichotomy that exists in the state regarding the symbols used by the university and in the state flag and what that dichotomy tells us about our society. In 2001 the state legislature in Mississippi passed a bill that would provide for a public referendum on changing the state’s flag’s design.  A flag is one of the most important properties of a nation, which cannot be explained wholly … Continued
