Week 6 of college football proved once again that the top teams are not invincible. This weekend Alabama, Oregon, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, and UCLA all lost their games, making it the first time that five teams in the top eight lost in the same week. Thursday, September 5th marked the return of the NFL season. The Denver Broncos hosted the Baltimore Ravens at Sports Authority Field. The end result of the game may not have been what everyone was expecting. The Broncos’ quarterback, Peyton Manning, had an amazing season opener. After the first half the Broncos never looked back as Manning led them to a 49-27 victory over the Ravens. Manning’s performance was so impressive that he tied an NFL record with seven touchdown passes. This forty-four year old record-breaking number hadn’t been seen since Joe Kapp’s 1969 performance. On Friday, November 30th, the Northern Illinois Huskies defeated #17 Kent State in the Mid-American Conference championship game. This placed them into the top 16 in Sunday’s Bowl Championship Series standings, earing them a spot in the . This is the first time ever that a team from a non-automatic qualifying conference has made it into the BCS while not being undefeated. NIU ended 12-1 with their only loss being to the Iowa Hawkeyes. The Hawkeyes’ record currently stands at 4-5 with three games left in the regular season. Iowa’s recent loss to Indiana has made the team’s record a losing one. To have a hope of getting into a bowl game, the Hawkeyes will have to win at least two of their remaining three games to end with a winning record.
