Shades of DeJean
A gray T-shirt. A haunting call. And a fan base that finally found payback.

KRUI’s recap of When We Were Young Festival 2025 in Las Vegas. Throughout 4 stages, 53 bands tore through their sets across a 13 hour day. Here is how I spent my day at When We Were Young.
Songwriters Ken Pomeroy and Loudon Wainwright III played at the James Thater for ICSF 2025. Seeing songwriters encouraging people to start and showing them how to begin is what makes art happen.
A celebration took place in Chicago this September. The 20th edition of Riot Fest has come and passed, and while still covered in a layer of dirt and sweat, next year’s edition can’t come soon enough.
Soldier Field finally had something to celebrate again, as the Chicago Bears snapped their eight-game losing streak to the New Orleans Saints with a 26-14 win. Powered by a dominant defense and resurgent run game, the Bears overcame offensive struggles to notch their fourth straight win and move to 4-2 on the season.
On October 1, 2025, I journeyed to Val Air Ballroom in Des Moines to see a performance from Father John Misty, and left with a disappointment most bitter and foul, great show though!

Pittsburgh refers to itself as the “City of Champions,” which is hard to argue with given the six Super Bowls and three Stanley Cups that the Steelers and Penguins have won respectively. The third team in Pittsburgh however, the Pirates, have not won a World Series since 1979, and would simply be happy with finishing a season above .500. The Pirates have logged an almost unbelievable 20 straight losing seasons, not only an MLB record for futility, but also the longest sub-.500 stretch for any North American professional sports team. You have to go all the way back to … Continued
A young, top prospect pitcher gets drafted by a team who has a history of losing and that is desperately in need of a savior to be the ace at the top of their rotation for years to come. The prospect has an electric arm and seems virtually un-hittable in the Minor Leagues. Then he gets to the Majors and is mowing down batters left and right. He is on top of the world, the team thinks that they have an ace for the next decade or more, and the city is buzzing. Then one pitch goes terribly wrong and … Continued
Everything seemed to be on the upswing for the Iowa Hawkeyes after the first half, but they ended up with a zero in the win column after a Week 1 30-27 loss to Northern Illinois. It was their first loss in an opener in 12 seasons. With 1:24 remaining in the fourth quarter Jake Rudock took a gamble and was punished by an interception that led to the game winning field goal. “A lot of teams will come up a little bit on third and one and it was one of those and it was called to take a shot.” … Continued
Opportunity… that is something that is hard to come by in the sports journalism world, but it is something that I have gotten as a member of the KRUI Sports Staff. This year has been an incredible year for me as I have gotten to explore new avenues for possible careers. Early this year, I was in awe to sit in the Press Box at Kinnick Stadium. I was even more in awe when I stepped onto the field for the final minutes of the Central Michigan game. I thought that it could not get any more awesome than that, … Continued
It is almost upon us – the NFL Draft. One of the most fascinating events during the NFL year is the NFL Draft and millions will tune in on April 25th during what is typically the strongest block on television – primetime on a Thursday night. For teams such as the Kansas City Chiefs, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Oakland Raiders, the draft brings hope. For teams such as the Atlanta Falcons, San Francisco 49ers, and New England Patriots it brings opportunity to become one step closer to what they came just short of this past year. For a team such as … Continued
By John Schmitt Much like driving through a river basin, the 2012-2013 Boston Celtics have experienced many peaks and valleys. The team will hit win streaks of six and eight, then lose four straight and seven of nine. Inconsistency is the Achilles’ heel of many teams around the NBA (i.e. Atlanta Hawks in recent years) that bounce them out early in the postseason, and this years Celtics could be a candidate for the same story… You don’t honestly believe that do you? Over the last five NBA seasons, the Celtics have consistently been an inconsistent team. In 2008-2009, they started … Continued
As the crowd warmed up for Detective April 4 at the Mill, there was a definite atmosphere that could only be created by a gathering such as Mission Creek. People spilled into the Yacht Club — bands and concert goers alike. Everyone there had wandered in at some point or other, following the scent of their favorite band or maybe just on a whim to have a peep at some appealing noise they heard from outside the club. With a lineup of Mirror Coat, Gloom Balloon, The Multiple Cat, and the band that everyone seemed to be eagerly awaiting, Detective, … Continued
Sports fans fill out brackets. If you’re interested in sports at all, you fill out a bracket. Ranging from the die hard season ticket holders, to the high school gym teachers who just want something to gamble on. Everyone suddenly becomes basketball fans in March, we all know that. Everyone revolves their life around basketball—it’s the nature of bracketology. . And everyone hates upsets. But from November to February, we want every underdog to win. We loved when Duke, Michigan, or Indiana lost. Not because we hated those teams, but simply because we loved the upsets. We love to storm … Continued
