Trapped in the Box

The Hawkeyes fell three points short in Ames, trapped in the same box they’ve always played in. Cautious routes and a passing game that refuses to breathe. Even glimpses of promise, like Gronowski’s 22-yard completion, couldn’t break them free from their rectangle of comfort.

Iowa Falls to Iowa State 16-13 in Annual CyHawk Series Matchup

The Hawkeyes came up just short in Ames, falling 16-13 to No. 16 Iowa State in a rivalry game that slipped away in the final minutes. Despite a strong defensive showing and improved play from QB Mark Gronowski, Iowa’s offense couldn’t find enough answers as the Cyclones snapped the Hawkeyes’ six-game win streak at Jack Trice Stadium.

The Grayt Team: Grayson Chapeau’s Story

At just 15 years old, Grayson Chapeau has spent nearly his entire life in a fight he never chose, against an inoperable brain tumor. But in the stands of a summer-league baseball team, he’s become something more: a symbol of joy, resilience, and a small town’s beating heart.

The difference between one season and the next is usually defined by what happens in the offseason. Whether it’s personal moves made a general manager, schematic adjustments made by a coach, or on-field improvements made by the players, the offseason is the time when season defining changes are made. That makes it fitting that we start a season preview with the man who dominated the offseason, Philadelphia Eagles’ football overlord Chip Kelly. Kelly started the offseason with a bang when he won a power struggle with now former-Eagles general manager Howie Roseman. While Roseman remains with the team in an … Continued

Background: The 2015 MLB Home Run Derby will be held tonight at the Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati. Just as we have seen nearly every year in recent memory, the rules have once again been changed significantly. This year, we will see a single elimination bracket for the eight entrants. Each player will be given just five minutes to hit as many home runs as possible. However, we will see time being added on. For every two home runs that a player hits over 420 feet, they will be awarded an additional minute. If a single ball travels more than … Continued

Subway must really love its Los Angeles baseball megastars. Last year, Angels outfielder Mike Trout was featured in Subway commercials that seemed to be played every five minutes on ESPN. While annoying, it was somewhat refreshing after having to constantly see Jared for 15 years. This year, Subway has made Dodgers ace and reigning NL MVP Clayton Kershaw the focus of its advertising campaign. Clayton apparently has been eating Subway sandwiches before starts for years. With his Subway order, Kershaw chooses fresh made turkey and cheese on nine grain wheat with jalapenos, mustard, and a little bit of vinegar. After seeing this … Continued

No, you do not need to get your eyes checked. You read that prediction right. Last night, the Cleveland Indians defeated the White Sox 5-2 to move to a lousy 17-23 record on the campaign. Although they are now winners of three in a row, the Indians’ struggles have been one of the biggest early surprises of this MLB season, as most experts believed that The Tribe would be able to sleep through the season and still win the AL Central. Forty games in, Terry Francona finds his squad in dead last in the division and nine games back of Kansas City. … Continued

The Iowa offense has some work to do It was a thrilling and captivating 29-28 victory for the offense in the Iowa spring game. Okay, maybe not “thrilling.” …or “captivating.” Both offenses struggled for the vast majority of the game, and a large portion of that falls on the quarterbacks. Iowa only has two, CJ Beathard and Tyler Wiegers, on scholarship and each looked shaky through large chunks of the contest on a cold, windy Saturday in Kinnick Stadium. Iowa took a few shots downfield, three of which saw wide open receivers over the top. Two were overthrown to Tevaun … Continued
