I spoke with Derek Sanders, frontman of Mayday Parade after their gig at Vibrant Music Hall in Waukee, Iowa. A conversation spanning much more than the 20 years of the band, he told me about his latest trilogy release and all the way back to his very first autograph he signed.

This month, Johnson County Democrats are conducting “listening tours” to connect with students at the University of Iowa, consisting of various extracurricular and undergraduate-based organizations and events. The listening tour works as an open forum for students to describe their needs, goals, and priorities when it comes to both elected officials and the Democratic Party.

The “Duck” Hunt for Playoffs Falls Short

In a rain-soaked showdown at Kinnick Stadium, Iowa’s playoff hopes slipped away as Oregon edged the Hawkeyes 18-16 on a last-second field goal. Despite a thrilling 93-yard touchdown drive led by Mark Gronowski, the Ducks’ steady ground game and clutch kicking sealed Iowa’s heartbreak.

The Hawkeyes faced the Illinois State Redbirds on Sunday in their second game this season. Coming into the game with one win already under their belt, the Hawkeyes were in good spirits. Their confidence was easy to see, as Iowa won the beginning tipoff against the Redbirds. The high energy and fast pace were evident from the first tip. Illinois State scored first resulting in what would be their only lead throughout the entire game, 2-0. The Iowa volleyball team came into Saturday’s game with Indiana looking to snap a nine game losing streak. The Hoosiers also were fighting a losing streak, entering Iowa City on a two-matck skid. It was the Indiana streak that came to an end, as the Hoosiers topped the Hawkeyes, 25-21, 25-23, 25-16. The Hawkeyes took a 3-1 lead in an opening set that would tip back and forth throughout. After a 1-4 start to the season, the Los Angeles Lakers have decided to fire head coach Mike Brown. Despite Brown having a 42-29 overall career record as Lakers coach, they still let him go. The Lakers were worried about how the season started because this was one of the worst starts in Lakers history. But the real question is why. Why did the Lakers fire their head coach? Six minutes into Friday’s season opener, the Iowa women’s basketball team looked a little rusty, and were tied 6-6 with Northern Illinois. Then the floodgates opened. The Hawkeyes scored 28 of the half’s final 35 points, providing a key difference in a 63-40 victory Friday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Iowa shot 80% from 3-point range in the first half, drilling four of their five attempts.
