For nine days, an unlikely cast of Hawkeyes made the world believe. They made themselves believe. The team of dreamers, and an unforgettable run in March.

Trash-talking is a fun thing for people to engage in while on and off the playing fields of their respective sports.  However, sometimes this trash-talking can be taken too far and over the past couple of days we have two prime examples of guys not thinking before they open their mouths. Thursday night was a must win for the Iowa men’s basketball team. For a squad that has NCAA Tournament aspirations come March, a loss on Thursday would have virtually eliminated the Hawkeyes from that conversation. Lose to Penn State — a team that arrived in Iowa City with a winless Big Ten record — and you simply lose relevancy. Although sluggish at times, the Hawkeyes (14-7, 3-5 Big Ten) were able to hold off the Nittany Lions (8-13, 0-9) in the second half and win, 76-67, in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. With the release of the substate pairings by the IHSAA, the 48 teams in Iowa’s largest class — 4A— learned the road they will need to travel to arrive in Des Moines for the state tournament.
