The Return of ASAP Rocky, “Don’t be Dumb” Album Review

After eight years of radio silence, rapper, producer, model and fashion designer ASAP Rocky finally released his latest studio album “Don’t be Dumb”. After a couple of listens, the album certainly demonstrated its charm and charisma. While it wasn’t quite up to par with his earlier records, it’s still a great listen on its own. 

As I walked out of Van Allen Hall after class at 2 pm on April 11th, I passed by the Blue Moose, to see girls camped out, in the rain, waiting in line for the doors to open at 5:30. This did not shock me at all however. It didn’t shock me because I knew who was playing there that night. The Take It Or Leave It Tour was coming to the Blue Moose Thursday night, and the fans were ready. Forming in 2006, Julia and Angus Stone are a brother-sister duo from Australia. The two write separately and then go on to collaborate for creating harmonies and structure. Angus is noted to have more of a Paul Simon or Damien Rice sounding voice where as Julia has a soft, lullaby-esque sound to her that’s utterly captivating. The duos sound is that of folk-blues with a twinge of acoustic and pop. They have released two studio albums as a duo as well have a total of four solo albums (two each). You may have not heard of the Minnesota based, indie pop band The Role Call yet, but it’s only a matter of time before they’re on your radar. As I waited in the cold outside The Rave in Milwaukee last weekend for a concert, I met the band and listened to a sample of their music.
