Thursday, September 5th marked the return of the NFL season. The Denver Broncos hosted the Baltimore Ravens at Sports Authority Field. The end result of the game may not have been what everyone was expecting. The Broncos’ quarterback, Peyton Manning, had an amazing season opener. After the first half the Broncos never looked back as Manning led them to a 49-27 victory over the Ravens. Manning’s performance was so impressive that he tied an NFL record with seven touchdown passes. This forty-four year old record-breaking number hadn’t been seen since Joe Kapp’s 1969 performance. The Broncos showed early struggles in … Continued

Pittsburgh refers to itself as the “City of Champions,” which is hard to argue with given the six Super Bowls and three Stanley Cups that the Steelers and Penguins have won respectively. The third team in Pittsburgh however, the Pirates, have not won a World Series since 1979, and would simply be happy with finishing a season above .500.   The Pirates have logged an almost unbelievable 20 straight losing seasons, not only an MLB record for futility, but also the longest sub-.500 stretch for any North American professional sports team. You have to go all the way back to … Continued

A young, top prospect pitcher gets drafted by a team who has a history of losing and that is desperately in need of a savior to be the ace at the top of their rotation for years to come. The prospect has an electric arm and seems virtually un-hittable in the Minor Leagues. Then he gets to the Majors and is mowing down batters left and right. He is on top of the world, the team thinks that they have an ace for the next decade or more, and the city is buzzing. Then one pitch goes terribly wrong and … Continued

Geno Smith and EJ Manuel, two rookie quarterbacks, will find themselves thrust into starting roles when week one rolls around in about four days.  Smith will start for the New York Jets and Manuel will start for the Buffalo Bills. Smith finds himself starting after Mark Sanchez was banged up in the third preseason game and Manuel finds himself there after Kevin Kolb sustained a, what some people are calling, career threatening head injury. Both of these guys were big time college quarterbacks, Smith put up huge numbers at West Virginia and Manuel helped the Florida State Seminoles to an … Continued

Everything seemed to be on the upswing for the Iowa Hawkeyes after the first half, but they ended up with a zero in the win column after a Week 1 30-27 loss to Northern Illinois. It was their first loss in an opener in 12 seasons. With 1:24 remaining in the fourth quarter Jake Rudock took a gamble and was punished by an interception that led to the game winning field goal. “A lot of teams will come up a little bit on third and one and it was one of those and it was called to take a shot.” … Continued

The Iowa secondary had some real struggles this past season.  These struggles either lost close games with Central Michigan, or allowed Michigan to pile on the points. According to B.J. Lowery though, they’re doing laps around where they were one year ago. “We (the secondary) improved our game speed, we’re playing way faster than we did last year.” Lowery said while addressing the media Tuesday. One big part that the secondary will be missing this year is Micah Hyde, who has his dreams set on the NFL and will leave open not only a corner spot, but one of the … Continued

There is something to be said for humble baseball players. Guys who do not run their mouths or act like they are the greatest man to ever walk on a diamond, but simply go out every day and play ball. I have always been a supporter of someone who lets his play do the talking, but once in a while a player comes along whose ego is justified. If a player is only 20 years old, batting third for a major league baseball team, coming off a Rookie of the Year season, and is batting .302 with 10 home runs … Continued
