I spoke with Derek Sanders, frontman of Mayday Parade after their gig at Vibrant Music Hall in Waukee, Iowa. A conversation spanning much more than the 20 years of the band, he told me about his latest trilogy release and all the way back to his very first autograph he signed.

This month, Johnson County Democrats are conducting “listening tours” to connect with students at the University of Iowa, consisting of various extracurricular and undergraduate-based organizations and events. The listening tour works as an open forum for students to describe their needs, goals, and priorities when it comes to both elected officials and the Democratic Party.

The “Duck” Hunt for Playoffs Falls Short

In a rain-soaked showdown at Kinnick Stadium, Iowa’s playoff hopes slipped away as Oregon edged the Hawkeyes 18-16 on a last-second field goal. Despite a thrilling 93-yard touchdown drive led by Mark Gronowski, the Ducks’ steady ground game and clutch kicking sealed Iowa’s heartbreak.

The Hawkeyes’ record currently stands at 4-5 with three games left in the regular season. Iowa’s recent loss to Indiana has made the team’s record a losing one. To have a hope of getting into a bowl game, the Hawkeyes will have to win at least two of their remaining three games to end with a winning record. Next week, the Hawkeyes will take on Purdue, who sports a 3-6 record. Looking back at Iowa’s season this year, there have been many ups and downs with plenty of bumps along the way. One yard. That’s all Iowa needed to keep its offensive drive going with about five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Yes, the Hawkeyes did have 4th down coming up, but it was just one yard to gain in order to potentially tie or take the lead. Iowa ran up to the line of scrimmage, ready to go. Then, there was a stoppage in play. An officials’ review on the previous play stopped the game momentarily, and Iowa rescinded its previous decision to go for it.
