Opinion: The University of Iowa must do more to protect its marching band and performers

By

When a student dies under the university’s watch, it should become the concern of the entire student body. That is why, despite not being a member of the Hawkeye Marching Band or a student-athlete, I write today to call for more robust protocols and protections in the future to safeguard the health of some of the most dedicated and hardworking student-athletes on campus: the Hawkeye Marching Band.  It’s worth comparing what happened on September 5th to a similar tragedy that happened recently at Arizona State. This involved a draft pick, Matthew Mayich, who collapsed from heat exhaustion during an intense … Continued

September 14, No New Jail Show

By

As far back as my first punk show as an Iowa City resident, I would continue to hear calls to action to vote against a bill being proposed to spend $125 million on building a new jail within Johnson County. It seemed like a persistent issue with little in the way of progress, as those with any power to stop it were refusing to listen to the pleas of concerned citizens. So when I saw the announcement of a show to protest this very bill, I knew it was something I couldn’t miss out on.  In collaboration with Johnson County … Continued

War of words in New York

By

It is not even the start of the NBA season and the Brooklyn Nets and New York Knicks are already at each other’s head. With the Nets acquiring Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, Jason Terry, and Andrei Kirilenko this Knicks and Nets rivalry is just heating up. These two teams cannot even wait until the start of the NBA preseason to start running their mouth. It all started with Nets new comer Paul Pierce. In an interview Pierce was reported saying: “I think the hate for the Knicks has grown a little. Everybody knows how much I disliked the Knicks when … Continued

Pair Of Rookies To Start Week One

By

Geno Smith and EJ Manuel, two rookie quarterbacks, will find themselves thrust into starting roles when week one rolls around in about four days.  Smith will start for the New York Jets and Manuel will start for the Buffalo Bills. Smith finds himself starting after Mark Sanchez was banged up in the third preseason game and Manuel finds himself there after Kevin Kolb sustained a, what some people are calling, career threatening head injury. Both of these guys were big time college quarterbacks, Smith put up huge numbers at West Virginia and Manuel helped the Florida State Seminoles to an … Continued

Not Cocky, Just Confident

By

There is something to be said for humble baseball players. Guys who do not run their mouths or act like they are the greatest man to ever walk on a diamond, but simply go out every day and play ball. I have always been a supporter of someone who lets his play do the talking, but once in a while a player comes along whose ego is justified. If a player is only 20 years old, batting third for a major league baseball team, coming off a Rookie of the Year season, and is batting .302 with 10 home runs … Continued

2014 Iowa football schedule released

By

On Thursday the Big Ten Office released the 2014 football conference schedule. Iowa will play eight of the 14 teams in the conference. This will be the first year of new divisions in the Big Ten. Iowa opens the conference schedule at Purdue on Sept. 27, then has a bye week followed by a home game against Indiana. They then will travel to Maryland for their first game as conference opponents. Down the stretch they have a bye after Maryland, then play five consecutive weeks. They’ll have Northwestern at home, play at Minnesota, at Illinois, and then their final two … Continued

Pat Ingram to transfer from University of Iowa

By

Freshman guard Pat Ingram has announced that he will transfer from the University of Iowa in a statement released by the Iowa Athletic Department on Tuesday. “Patrick is a tremendous person who was an integral part of our program last season,” said McCaffery in the release. “Patrick indicated that he wants to be closer to home and we have granted his request. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors.” This doesn’t come as a surprise for a player that saw good minutes at the beginning of the year, but they slowly declined after the non-conference portion until … Continued

Iowa to take on Notre Dame at home in Big Ten-ACC Challenge

By

Iowa is slated now to take on Notre Dame in their initial Big Ten-ACC Challenge. The game is scheduled for the first day of the challenge on December 3. The game will be played at Carver-Hawkeye Arena and be televised on the ESPN family of networks. It adds great depth to Iowa’s non-conference schedule, as Notre Dame made the NCAA tournament and lost to Iowa State in the second round. Now between Notre Dame, Iowa State, and the Battle 4 Atlantis field, Iowa will have the potential to get some resume building victories. Notre Dame finished the 2012-2013 season with … Continued

Thanks For a Great Year KRUI

By

Opportunity… that is something that is hard to come by in the sports journalism world, but it is something that I have gotten as a member of the KRUI Sports Staff. This year has been an incredible year for me as I have gotten to explore new avenues for possible careers. Early this year, I was in awe to sit in the Press Box at Kinnick Stadium. I was even more in awe when I stepped onto the field for the final minutes of the Central Michigan game. I thought that it could not get any more awesome than that, … Continued

McDonald’s, the NFL and MLB

By

Forbes says that every day, despite the fact that healthier options exist, McDonalds serves 47 million people worldwide.  McDonald’s has mastered the art of figuring out and then giving people what they want.  Just like McDonald’s, the NFL is constantly trying to tweak its product to maximize profits.  Because of this aggressive business plan, the NFL will always be more popular than Major League Baseball.  The other half of this situation is that Major League Baseball, just like those healthier options, will always be better. NFL fans criticize MLB for a variety of reasons.  The game is too slow.  The … Continued

NBA Mock Draft Board and Lottery Chances

By

1.Orlando – Nerlens Noel, C Kentucky: No surprise here, he’s going first regardless of who gets the pick. Elite shot blocking and defense make him the No. 1 overall despite the injury. 2.Charlotte– Ben McLemore G, Kansas: The Bobcats need to score and McLemore can be that guy alongside Kemba and MKG. 3.Cleveland-Shabazz Muhammad G, UCLA: A partner for Kyrie Irving, he didn’t mature quite as well as I thought, but this class is weak and that is good enough for him to go third. 4.Phoenix-Victor Oladipo, SG Indiana – The Suns played little to no defense this year and … Continued
