Hawkeye Hope for a Bowl Hanging by a Thread

The Hawkeyes’ record currently stands at 4-5 with three games left in the regular season. Iowa’s recent loss to Indiana has made the team’s record a losing one. To have a hope of getting into a bowl game, the Hawkeyes will have to win at least two of their remaining three games to end with a winning record. Commentary: 4th-and-1 decision could cost Iowa bowl game

One yard. That’s all Iowa needed to keep its offensive drive going with about five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Yes, the Hawkeyes did have 4th down coming up, but it was just one yard to gain in order to potentially tie or take the lead. Iowa ran up to the line of scrimmage, ready to go. Then, there was a stoppage in play. An officials’ review on the previous play stopped the game momentarily, and Iowa rescinded its previous decision to go for it. Halftime Update: Iowa leads Indiana, 14-10

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Not a lot of offense. That was the theme during Saturday’s second quarter in Memorial Stadium. Iowa leads Indiana at halftime, 14-10. The Hawkeyes had multiple three-and-outs and couldn’t sustain a drive until the final few minutes. Even then, Iowa could not put points on the board. The Black and Gold accumulated just 34 total yards in the quarter. There have been a couple injuries today: senior corner Micah Hyde and sophomore offensive lineman Jordan Walsh have both left the game. Both players’ status is unknown. 1st Q Update: Iowa leads Indiana, 14-3

After dropping its past two games in convincing fashion, Iowa struck first on Saturday. The Hawkeyes scored about eight minutes into the game following a very efficient offensive drive of six plays for 72 yards. Quarterback James Vandenberg hit receiver Kevonte Martin-Manley for a 24-yard touchdown pass along the sidelines to put Iowa on the board. On Indiana’s first play from scrimmage following Iowa’s drive — and supplanting starter Cam Coffman with Nate Sudfeld at quarterback — linebacker Chris Kirksey intercepted Sudfeld and returned it 18 yards for a touchdown.
