Under the Table: George’s Buffet

George’s Buffet is an unassuming dive bar sat just off of the one-way, westbound, Market Street. The small structure is saddled between an alley leading back to another side street and a modern imposing building housing The Webster (a high-end feature in Iowa City’s restaurant scene) on the corner of North Linn Street. Further up the road is the Bluebird’s parking lot, and its corresponding classic diner.

Interview: Set Your Goals at When We Were Young

I sat down with Jordan Brown and Matt Wilson of Set Your Goals while at When We Were Young Festival. The California natives made their highly anticipated homecoming this past February, playing their first gig in 6 years. We spoke about their return to live performances, whats next for Set Your Goals, and how good “One Battle After Another” is.

Faith, evidently, is something that Iowa does not have in kicker Mike Meyer. Meyer is 0-for-1 on 50+ FGs this season, but that was into the wind against Michigan State. Iowa found themselves twice around the 34-yard line and elected to hurry up punt it at the end of the first quarter, the second Iowa went for it on fourth and one and ended up stuffed at the line. Junior Samantha Logic and senior Theairra Taylor have been named captains for the 2013-2014 season for the Iowa women’s basketball team. Both are returning starters and both started all 34 games last year. “Theairra and Samantha are exceptional leaders and will serve as terrific role models for our young players.” Lisa Bluder said in a press release from Iowa Athletics. This doesn’t come as much of a surprise, as Taylor is the lone senior on a team with seven underclassmen. Taylor has come back from three ACL tears and is in her fifth season with the Hawkeyes. She was voted … Continued

Ever since the acquisition of LeBron James, Chris Bosh, and the re-signing of Dwyane Wade in the summer of 2010, the Miami Heat have ruled the Eastern Conference. Miami has won the Eastern Conference three seasons in a row, and have won the NBA Championship each of the last two seasons, however it’s time to look at which teams have the chance to take down the Heat and represent the Eastern Conference in the NBA Finals this season. Chicago Bulls: The Bulls are finally healthy again.  On Tuesday, Derrick Rose will play in his first meaningful game since Game 1 … Continued

The most prestigious of the annual individual player awards in the NBA is, without question, the Most Valuable Player award. This season’s crop of candidates for the Maurice Podoloff MVP trophy include the likes of LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Chris Paul, to name a few. However, I’m more intrigued by the outcome of another annual award, the Comeback Player of the Year. After a season (and postseason) full of devastating long-term injuries to star players throughout the league, the 2013-2014 Comeback Player of the Year race will quite possibly be more thrilling than the MVP battle. Here are some … Continued
