Music Staff Picks: The Best Releases of April

billy woods – Aethiopes On Aethiopes, billy woods reestablishes his strengths as a storyteller, with help from producer Preservation’s experimentally jazzy beats. By now, woods has cemented himself as one of hip hop’s greatest writers, and his brooding yet clever introspection sounds especially powerful over Preservation’s musical backdropping. Samples of pianos will twinkle across some tracks, and pound discordantly on others, while electric guitars ring and horns blow. By the time the harmonica enters the equation, the beats here are unparalleled. It is an enveloping atmosphere completed by excellent percussion, which moves between hand drums, full kits, and shuffling jangles … Continued

IOWA CITY – Young, Tenacious, and Ready to Dance. When describing the 2017 Iowa Basketball team, these concepts first come to mind. Each of the previous renditions of the squad in recent years made promises which were not kept. Past teams lead by players Peter Jok, Jarrod Uthoff, and Aaron White set bars high with little result to show. However, the Hawkeye program does have results of the rise, which began in 2010. At this point, everybody knows about the crazy week that took place in Iowa City. All Big Ten left tackle Brandon Scherff had his knee scoped, and defensive end Drew Ott was involved in a scooter accident. All week there were question in the air whether these two key contributors would be able to play against the Iowa State Cyclones, if at all for the Hawkeyes. At 2:40 pm Saturday, when the 70,858 fans in attendance at Kinnick Stadium saw those two take the field to Back in Black, that crazy week tuned into optimism. The Hawkeye offense lead by … Continued

As most of the State of Iowa knows by now, Iowa and Iowa State men’s basketball teams will face off December 13th on ESPNU. An interesting tidbit is that the dorms in Iowa City don’t actually get ESPNU, so I’d make plans accordingly to see this can’t miss game. Below is a break down of the teams and looking forward. Iowa Iowa has coasted through their non-conference schedule so far outside of the Nebraska-Omaha game. They have put up at least 80 points in every game. They are just outside the rankings of the AP top 25 poll. Iowa is … Continued
