Concert Review: Jefferson Starship, September 21st

Jefferson Starship landed in Iowa City’s Englert Theater on Sunday the 21st of September for a spectacular show. As the show began, the projector took us through time, introducing the band’s long history and members that shaped their legacy, with pictures and videos eliciting our minds’ imagination to the past lives of the other 99% of the room. It. Was. AWESOME.

Magic 87 Pacers 97: When you see Indiana on your schedule make sure you get your jumper right the day before, Roy Hibbert has a reserved parking spot in the lane this NBA season. Last night Hibbert not only blocked shots he physically stopped opponents with much more momentum then him in their tracks with all SEVEN of his opening night blocks. Apparently his offseason goals of getting bigger with increased weight and MMA training have paid off. As long as he can stay healthy (he did scare us with a slight knee injury last night) he seems poised for … Continued

The University of Iowa woman’s basketball team started their 2013-2014 season Friday night hosting the Hawkeye Challenge at Carver-Hawkeye arena. Iowa faced off against UC Riverside a team from California looking to upset the Hawks on their own court. The game was fast paced and both teams had their equal share of mistakes that could have been crucial in how the game flowed. The Hawkeye starting lineup consisted of Kali Peschel, Bethany Doolittle, Melissa Dixon, Theairra Taylor, and Samantha Logic. Starting off with winning the jump ball, the Hawkeyes were early to score with an assist by Samantha Logic to … Continued

I’ve had it. Look, I’m all for motions of euphoria for outlasting an opponent. I get it: big wins are phenomenal. You circle the date on the calendar as soon as you unpack your bags in August. All week you hear about the heroics of the opposing team, and when the moment of the showdown finally arrives, your squad prevails. Many of us have been there. It’s wonderful, it’s life changing. But students, pay heed: The pointless storming the field has got to stop. Now, I’m not talking about those beloved DII schools who knock off a FBS power in … Continued

Sophomore Nicole Smith is going to be sidelined after tearing her meniscus during the Hawkeyes exhibition win over Concordia. Smith didn’t seem to visibly injure it on the court, but according to Lisa Bluder the injury is in the “five percent that has to be sutured and that means the recovery process is longer.” The news of Nicole Smith’s injury is disheartening, especially considering the impact it will have on her season. Meniscus tears can be particularly tricky, often requiring not only surgical intervention but also a substantial recovery period. In such cases, it’s vital for athletes to understand their … Continued

Offense: B+ Iowa gave Bethany Doolittle 16 shots, more than double the next most attempts for the Hawkeyes. If Iowa is going to succeed this year they’re going to have to get the ball inside early and often, something they did very well against the undersized Concordia Bears. Doolittle shot the ball 16 times without getting fouled, which downgrades it from an A, if she can get to the line as well as get good looks, Iowa should have a much easier time shooting outside as well. Melissa Dixon was 4-of-5 from three-point range, including two within the first minute … Continued

Faith, evidently, is something that Iowa does not have in kicker Mike Meyer. Meyer is 0-for-1 on 50+ FGs this season, but that was into the wind against Michigan State. Iowa found themselves twice around the 34-yard line and elected to hurry up punt it at the end of the first quarter, the second Iowa went for it on fourth and one and ended up stuffed at the line. Getting stuffed at the line arguably was the turning point of the game. It led to a Wisconsin punt that pinned Iowa at the one-yard line. From there, a Jake Rudock … Continued
