Gustafson wills Hawkeyes to in-state sweep over Drake

By

I don’t know how many times it has to be reiterated, but Megan Gustafson is arguably the best player in all of women’s college basketball and she supported that argument Thursday night with another All-American performance. She finished with 44 points (19 in the fourth quarter) and 14 rebounds in Iowa’s 91-82 win over Drake in the Knapp Center. “The best I can do is to set myself up so my teammates can get me a good pass” Gustafson said of her herculean fourth quarter. “It’s really important for me to have good footwork and to seal myself and be … Continued

Cook, Stiffling Defense leads Iowa past Western Carolina

By

Tuesday night’s game was a classic non-conference mismatch between the Big Ten, 22nd-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes and the Catamounts of Western Carolina of the Southern Conference. The game was controlled throughout by the Hawkeyes, but the Catamounts showed they were willing to make it a dogfight. “It was a strange game” Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery said “I don’t remember a game where a team shot 65% from three, and went in at the half down 19”. It was an odd game at that as Western Carolina shot the ball better in the 1st half, but the glaring stat was the … Continued

Cook reaches 1,000 point milestones as Hawkeyes tame Panthers

By

Tyler Cook came into Saturday’s game against Northern Iowa with 986 career points in the Black and Gold, 14 shy of 1,000 career points. The matchup appeared to be a favorable one for Cook to reach the milestone and did so early through the second half on a putback layup off a Luka Garza miss. “It’s cool” Cook said of the achievement, “But the most important thing is we got the win, I’m not a primary ball-handler so I couldn’t get to this point without guys like Jordan [Bohannon] and the rest of my teammates and my coaches for giving … Continued

Recinos, Hawkeyes survive Nebraska on last-second field goal

By

Miguel Recinos had watched one miss the uprights earlier in the fourth-quarter: “It all started with my hips when I missed that first one…I struck the ball really well, it just didn’t behave the way I thought it would,” the senior kicker from Mason City said. But following Nate Stanely’s pass to T.J. Hockenson to convert a 4th and 8 on Nebraska’s 37-yard line, Recinos had a chance at redemption. He did not disappoint. Garza, Wieskamp lead Iowa past Alabama State

By

There was no question about it, from start to finish, Iowa dominated the lowly Alabama State Jaguars from the Southwest Athletic Conference. The Hawkeyes led for all 40 minutes of basketball and put a massive hurt on the boys from Montgomery in their 105-78 win on Wednesday night. “I didn’t think we would come out in any way, shape, or form not ready to play this game,” head coach Fran McCaffery said “Alabama State played Iowa State, they played South Dakota State tough and they won their two Non-[Division] ones.” The Hawkeyes started off lightning quick as they ran out … Continued

Hawkeyes use defense to beat UMKC

By

A big question mark for Iowa coming into the 2018-19 season was how much they improved defensively. Last season, the Hawkeyes were one of the worst teams defensive in the Power 6 conferences in college basketball, with only Oregon State having a worse rating according to Ken Pomeroy’s rankings. Thursday night, the Iowa offense was struggling, at halftime the Hawkeyes were only 8-25 from the field, shooting 17 threes in the process. “In the first half, we took 17 threes and eight two-point shots, So I was really disappointed in that aspect, I thought we had an advantage in the … Continued

Iowa Defense has 4 picks as Hawkeyes reclaim the Floyd of Rosedale trophy

By

Iowa’s superior defense proved to be just too much for the Minnesota Golden Gophers as Iowa came away with a 48-31 victory over the Gophers in TCF Bank Stadium Saturday afternoon. Colin Shultz has more. Iowa started two freshman corners in their first game on the road of the 2018 campaign. Both seemed to be up for the challenge. Riley Moss had two picks in Saturday’s game in Minneapolis, and Julius Brents had one interception as well as two pass break ups to help propel the Hawkeye defense and keep momentum on Iowa’s side for the majority of the game. … Continued

Kinnick Magic A No Show Vs Wisconsin

By

It just wasn’t so for the Hawkeyes on Saturday night. They fought valiantly in their Big Ten opener, but unfortunately they fell short to Wisconsin (3-1, 1-0 in Big Ten) 28-17. Ultimately, it was two big special team blunders and a long Badger drive that cost Iowa (3-1, 0-1 in Big Ten). Both were fumbles, the first one was knocked out of Kyle Groeneweg’s hands the second came courtesy of Shaun Beyer’s foot inadvertently grazing the ball before being recovered by the Badgers. It was the latter one that stung the most for the Hawkeyes as it set the Wisconsin … Continued
