(Photo Credit: Iowa Athletics) IOWA CITY – It would have been easy for Cole McDonald to give up. The Hawkeye senior right-hander has had a circuitous journey throughout his baseball career. But when Iowa opens the 2019 season on February 15 against George Mason in Kissimmee, Fla., the first Hawkeye to take the mound for head coach Rick Heller’s club will be McDonald. “[McDonald] epitomizes Hawkeye baseball,” said Heller at Iowa’s media day on Tuesday. “Development, on and off the field, being a winner, he’s all of those things.” A number of circumstances arose that seemed like they would have … Continued

Iowa’s season was at another crossroads: They had just had a bad loss up at Minnesota, giving up 92 points and were still reeling off a huge, 2nd half collapse against Michigan State at home. The foe was #5 Michigan, and very few gave Iowa a chance. So what did, Iowa do? They went out and beat the Wolverines by 15 points. The win was as dominant as the score indicated, as Iowa led for 30:44 of the game’s 40 minutes against a Michigan team that prides themselves on controlling the tempo. The Hawkeyes forced the Wolverines to shoot 33 … Continued

Iowa’s offense had struggled in the first half, outside of Joe Wieskamp knocking down four threes on four attempts, the Iowa offense had been pretty quiet. The Hawkeyes held for the final shot where Connor McCaffery found Isaiah Moss wide open for a three, which Moss nailed as the buzzer sounded on the first half. That was only the beginning. For the next three minutes of game play, the Hawkeyes nailed SIX three pointers and took their lead from 43-31 to 58-42. Isaiah Moss buried four threes in the second half, five in all as he finished with 21 points … Continued

It’s not very often in Division I college basketball that you get the chance to empty your bench the way Iowa did on Saturday afternoon. It’s even more rare when everyone scores, including all of the walk-ons. But, that’s exactly what happened in Iowa’s 110-64 win against the Savannah State Tigers. In the win Iowa set a new school record with 19 made threes, ironically the previous record, 18, was set in 2016 against the same Savannah State team. “It depends on the style you do it in” Fran McCaffery said of the 42 threes Iowa took as a team. … Continued

I don’t know how many times it has to be reiterated, but Megan Gustafson is arguably the best player in all of women’s college basketball and she supported that argument Thursday night with another All-American performance. She finished with 44 points (19 in the fourth quarter) and 14 rebounds in Iowa’s 91-82 win over Drake in the Knapp Center. “The best I can do is to set myself up so my teammates can get me a good pass” Gustafson said of her herculean fourth quarter. “It’s really important for me to have good footwork and to seal myself and be … Continued

Tuesday night’s game was a classic non-conference mismatch between the Big Ten, 22nd-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes and the Catamounts of Western Carolina of the Southern Conference. The game was controlled throughout by the Hawkeyes, but the Catamounts showed they were willing to make it a dogfight. “It was a strange game” Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery said “I don’t remember a game where a team shot 65% from three, and went in at the half down 19”. It was an odd game at that as Western Carolina shot the ball better in the 1st half, but the glaring stat was the … Continued

Tyler Cook came into Saturday’s game against Northern Iowa with 986 career points in the Black and Gold, 14 shy of 1,000 career points. The matchup appeared to be a favorable one for Cook to reach the milestone and did so early through the second half on a putback layup off a Luka Garza miss. “It’s cool” Cook said of the achievement, “But the most important thing is we got the win, I’m not a primary ball-handler so I couldn’t get to this point without guys like Jordan [Bohannon] and the rest of my teammates and my coaches for giving … Continued

Miguel Recinos had watched one miss the uprights earlier in the fourth-quarter: “It all started with my hips when I missed that first one…I struck the ball really well, it just didn’t behave the way I thought it would,” the senior kicker from Mason City said. But following Nate Stanely’s pass to T.J. Hockenson to convert a 4th and 8 on Nebraska’s 37-yard line, Recinos had a chance at redemption. He did not disappoint. There was no question about it, from start to finish, Iowa dominated the lowly Alabama State Jaguars from the Southwest Athletic Conference. The Hawkeyes led for all 40 minutes of basketball and put a massive hurt on the boys from Montgomery in their 105-78 win on Wednesday night. “I didn’t think we would come out in any way, shape, or form not ready to play this game,” head coach Fran McCaffery said “Alabama State played Iowa State, they played South Dakota State tough and they won their two Non-[Division] ones.” The Hawkeyes started off lightning quick as they ran out … Continued
