Trapped in the Box

The Hawkeyes fell three points short in Ames, trapped in the same box they’ve always played in. Cautious routes and a passing game that refuses to breathe. Even glimpses of promise, like Gronowski’s 22-yard completion, couldn’t break them free from their rectangle of comfort.

Iowa Falls to Iowa State 16-13 in Annual CyHawk Series Matchup

The Hawkeyes came up just short in Ames, falling 16-13 to No. 16 Iowa State in a rivalry game that slipped away in the final minutes. Despite a strong defensive showing and improved play from QB Mark Gronowski, Iowa’s offense couldn’t find enough answers as the Cyclones snapped the Hawkeyes’ six-game win streak at Jack Trice Stadium.

The Grayt Team: Grayson Chapeau’s Story

At just 15 years old, Grayson Chapeau has spent nearly his entire life in a fight he never chose, against an inoperable brain tumor. But in the stands of a summer-league baseball team, he’s become something more: a symbol of joy, resilience, and a small town’s beating heart.

Next Tuesday afternoon, Derek Jeter will emerge from the Yankees’ visiting dugout in Houston, walk towards the on-deck circle of Minute Maid Park, and await his first at-bat in his final season in Yankee pinstripes. As soon as he digs a divot in the right-handed batter’s box, extends his right hand to the umpire to indicate the continuation of his prolonged routine and then readies for the first offering, he will begin what may become the second consecutive “farewell” tour in Major League Baseball. Don’t get me wrong, Derek Jeter has accomplished just about everything a player could dream of: … Continued

To say Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz finished the 2013 season with a bang is a rude understatement. Last October, Ortiz amassed a .688 batting average in the World Series, drove in 13 runs throughout the playoffs, and hit 5 homeruns including this memorable grand slam in Game 2 of the ALCS. Ortiz’s strong play in the 2013 post season left him hoisting the World Series MVP trophy and most importantly, the Red Sox had claimed the Commissioner’s Trophy as the 2013 World Series Champions. Ortiz, now 38, has been hampered with questions about his ability to perform at … Continued

On Selection Monday, the path was made clear for the Louisville Cardinals: two wins in the NCAA Tournament would send the Cardinals home to play the Regional rounds of the 2014 NCAA Tournament at the KFC Yum! Center. The first part of that path was completed Sunday evening, as the third-seeded Cardinals (31-4) blew past No. 14 Idaho  (25-9) 88-42 in an NCAA Tournament First Round game at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. It is the fifth tournament game in 2014 to be decided by more than 35 points. Five players reached double figures for Louisville, who received a three-seed from the NCAA … Continued

The New York Knicks have been a train wreck so far in the 2013-2014 NBA season. The Knickerbockers flopped to begin the year, opening 6-16 and falling to 21-40 last week. They botched the trade deadline by failing to unload Iman Shumpert after openly shopping him. They have treated head coach Mike Woodson like the guy at a company that everyone around the organization knows is underperforming, and the manager just hasn’t gotten around to firing yet. That was last week. Despite their struggles, the Knicks are currently on a 5-game win streak after dismantling the Boston Celtics last night … Continued

With March Madness and the NCAA wrestling championships right around the corner, Iowans will be plenty busy when it comes to watching sports, and since the Hawkeyes are projected to make a good showing in both, this only amps up the entertainment value. However, this is always the case regardless of the year. Hawkeye wrestling is traditionally a powerhouse which automatically garners interest, and combine this with the fact that this state lives and breathes wrestling and there will always be a following. The same can be said for basketball. Next to football, it is the second highest revenue generating … Continued
