Opinion: The University of Iowa must do more to protect its marching band and performers

When a student dies under the university’s watch, it should become the concern of the entire student body. September 14, No New Jail Show

As far back as my first punk show as an Iowa City resident, I would continue to hear calls to action to vote against a bill being proposed to spend $125 million on building a new jail within Johnson County. It seemed like a persistent issue with little in the way of progress, as those with any power to stop it were refusing to listen to the pleas of concerned citizens. A Michigan Odyssey

Initially, I wanted to write a story about what it was like to step into the Big House for the very first time. Then our travel plans went south, and then the game itself happened. So instead of just one story, this is a collection of tales from one of the craziest weekends of all time.

KRUI 89.7 FM has been Iowa City’s sound alternative since 1984. Formerly located in South Quadrangle and then at 129 Grand Avenue Court, KRUI now has relocated to a permanent home in the Iowa Memorial Union.

As one of the largest student-run organizations, KRUI boasts a staff of more than 400 students in nine departments. KRUI features a variety of specialty programming — sports broadcasts, news features, and specialty music shows featuring specific genres and eras of music. KRUI also features a variety of musical genres including indie rock, alt-country, punk, pop, electronic, jazz, and local music.

Broadcasting at 100 watts, KRUI reaches the greater Iowa City and Coralville areas. KRUI also has a worldwide audience through Web broadcasting. KRUI is committed to providing listeners with unique, quality programming in music, news, and sports.

KRUI operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week as a noncommercial radio alternative to mainstream programming. KRUI also serves as an educational laboratory for students interested in radio and the broadcast industry.

KRUI has two missions:

1. The station serves as an educational laboratory for students interested in learning about radio and the broadcast industry.

2. KRUI provides the Iowa City community with a unique programming alternative in music, news, and sports.
