Hawkeyes women’s soccer team opens up Big Ten Conference play with its first loss of the season
to No. 15 Michigan, 2-1, on Sunday here in Iowa City. Michigan comes in with a 6-1-0 season record
and leads the all-time series over Iowa, 13-2-2. The Wolverines lead the first half with Nkem Ezurike,
Michigan’s leading forward scoring the team’s first point. After the first half the Hawkeyes came back
ready to defend their winning streak scoring their first point of the game by the freshman Bri Toelle.
Unfortunately, the Wolverines were not giving up without a fight scoring their second point just a minute
later. Iowa fought hard to come back with several missed attempts at making the score even, and
eventually ran out of time. Though taking their first loss the Hawkeyes outshot the Wolverine ladies
12-7. Iowa is now 8-1 overall and 0-1 in conference play. The Hawkeyes lead the Big Ten with a perfect
non-conference record and are ranked top 10 in the NCAA statistical rankings released mid-September.
The Hawkeyes take the field again Friday against Illinois in Champaign.
