Opinion: The University of Iowa must do more to protect its marching band and performers

By

When a student dies under the university’s watch, it should become the concern of the entire student body. That is why, despite not being a member of the Hawkeye Marching Band or a student-athlete, I write today to call for more robust protocols and protections in the future to safeguard the health of some of the most dedicated and hardworking student-athletes on campus: the Hawkeye Marching Band.  It’s worth comparing what happened on September 5th to a similar tragedy that happened recently at Arizona State. This involved a draft pick, Matthew Mayich, who collapsed from heat exhaustion during an intense … Continued

September 14, No New Jail Show

By

As far back as my first punk show as an Iowa City resident, I would continue to hear calls to action to vote against a bill being proposed to spend $125 million on building a new jail within Johnson County. It seemed like a persistent issue with little in the way of progress, as those with any power to stop it were refusing to listen to the pleas of concerned citizens. Riot Fest just wrapped a successful, yet muddy weekend in Chicago. From September 18-20, over a hundred thousand people graced the grounds, later mud pit, of Douglass Park. Here are some of my favorite selects from the weekend.

The single “Yet Again” is arguably the most accessible song on the album, but it still maintains the haunting aura the album strives for. From the moment the album begins with “Sleeping Ute,” it is … Continued

Show Announcement: Matt & Kim + Grand Funk Railroad at UI Homecoming

By

SCOPE Productions is proud to announce that Matt & Kim and Grand Funk Railroad will be co-headlining the 2012 University of Iowa Homecoming concert. The show will take place at the Pentacrest Lawn on Friday, September 28th immediately following the Homecoming parade. This event is free and open to the public. Rousing audiences into mass dance parties with only drums and a keyboard, New York City indie poppers Matt Johnson and Kim Schifino have catapulted from humble Brooklyn beginnings to hard-earned international stardom. Their spunky, groove-heavy aesthetic, vividly demonstrated on hits like “Cameras” and “Daylight,” is as infectiously danceable as … Continued

On Saturday, September 15, the living legend Dino Mannone stopped by KRUI to perform. Don’t forget about his show on Wednesday at 10 PM at Public Space One. The performance will feature the budding sensation Max and Kendall After Dark as an opening act, along with the Italian Futurist Robot Sextet. Admission is free, and, as per Dino’s request, “respectable threads” are preferred. Listen to Dino sing “Rose Marie” live at KRUI: [audio: http://krui.fm/assets/music/Rose%20Marie.m4a]
