Preview: Das Racist

Das RacistBy Emily Kane

Unsigned and dominating, Das Racist is a Brooklyn-based trio that is being sought after all around the world, and for good reason.  You would be hard-pressed to find a more witty and clever rap group. Their eccentric style and lyrical genius has brought them much Internet and magazine fame, receiving astounding reviews from many blogs and magazines.  Well, those that did not disregard their raps as a joke.

After listening to Das Racist one easily realizes that they are far from joking.  They unconventionally mix catchy hooks and popular samples that keep you interested and moving.  Obscure pop culture references, super literate wordplay, irony, marijuana talk, and a multitude of fast food affiliations make up the content of Das Racist’s lyrics.  They attack some bigger world issues wielding a slew of craftily-worded metaphors. They also have perfected the artistry of integrating smart content into their raps without being arrogant.  These are many of the reasons that Das Racist has become such a phenomenon.

Last year they released two full albums Shut Up, Dude and Sit Down, Man, which got recognition from many publications such as Rolling Stone and Paste Magazine.  Their hit song “Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell” has reached over one million views on YouTube and their success is only climbing upwards from there.

Opening for Das Racist is an Iowa City favorite, The Hood Internet, a mashup duo from Chicago.  They mix popular hip-hop with indie music and the end result is pure aural magic.
