Prostitution in Iowa

Online prostitution is taking the place of street prostitution all over the country, and Iowa is no different. What you might not expect is that this is leading to increases of sex trafficking, especially among minors. The anonymity of online prostitution makes it more difficult for police to track down the kidnapped girls, and more difficult to prosecute their kidnappers. Brad Gaspelin investigates this story by talking with Lt. Shane Kron about online crime and his recent arrest of 4 online prostitutes in Coralville, Teresa Downing who works with the Network Against Human Trafficking, and Kevin Kinney, a Johnson county Sherrif Detective who brought down the first human trafficking ring in Iowa and saved a 13 year old girl.

More Updates Coming Soon.

For those who don’t know what flash-fiction is, it’s all about brevity. There are no word limits in the Quickies reading series, but there is a time limit. Lindsay Hunter tells us about that limit, the consequences for breaking it, and some of the other rules of Quickies. Quickies performed a special Iowa City reading as part of the Mission Creek Festival.

Katie Crouch, a national best-selling author, read an excerpt from her book as part of the Mission Creek Festival’s Literature series. She is the author of Girls in Trucks and more recently, Men and Dogs, both of which have received glowing reviews from news outlets across the country. Crouch, whose writing has been described as sardonic and darkly funny, was gracious enough to sit down with KRUI to talk about her writing.

Brad Gaspelin Investigates a GM corn crop recently deregulated by the USDA

[audio:http://krui.fm/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Gaspelin-Enogen-Feature.mp3|titles=Enogen In Iowa]

Enogen is a brand of genetically modified corn that was recently deregulated by the USDA. It isn’t in Iowa fields this year, only in a small part of Kansas, but it will be here in the years to come. Enogen makes the production of ethanol much more efficient by removing the need to add amylase to break down the corn. This is profitable and good for the environment. This corn does pose a problem for milling companies, however, who use the corn for starch. Enogen disrupts the thickness of starch, even if there is 1 Enogen kernel in 10,000 kernels.

Brad Gaspelin Reports on this issue, investigating what it could mean for Iowa’s future.
