"Past Life" by Tame Impala provides insight into the strange, creepy nature of the entire album.

The post Track of the Week: “Past Life” by Tame Impala appeared first on KRUI Radio.

From the album “Currents,” Tame Impala‘s song “Past Life,” is this week’s Track of the Week, and provides insight into the strange, creepy nature of the entire album, just like the weird GIF below.

The Australian band released their third album, “Currents,” in July of 2015 and watched it skyrocket to the top of numerous music charts. Although the general public clearly enjoyed this album, I thought most of the songs sounded the same and followed similar structure. They were all pretty disturbing and eerie, but one song seemed especially freaky.

Like all the other songs on this album, this one begins with dream sequence-esque. However, unlike other songs, a deep, distorted voice begins discussing his mundane routine of picking up his dry-cleaning when suddenly seeing his “lover from a past life.”

The rest of the song seems to just repeat the words “past life” with the distorted voice sporadically explaining the relationship he may or may not have had with this woman on top of a repetitive melodic phrase. While I did not like the song, I can’t say the tune isn’t catchy; I could hardly stop humming the song after listening to it once. Those few hours were awful.

This song which addresses so many issues ranging from reincarnation, to denial, to the resurfacing of memories in dreams; perhaps the person to whom this mysterious voice belongs would be Freud’s ideal subject to study.

Although Halloween has ended, if you’d like to experience the strange spookiness of the track, you can listen to it below.

Unless you’re a superhuman with incredibly discerning ears, you may have trouble understanding what the singer/speaker says in the song. Here are the lyrics to help you fully experience the uncanny.

This week’s track “Pontoon”, is by Brisbane native Emma-Louise.

Beat Magazine describes her, “There’s a certain kind of female that occupies a space in which she’s perpetually young and girlish but also wise and worldly. . .This ethereal mix of capability/vulnerability resides in Emma Louise…”.

“Pontoon” is the 4th single from the Brisbane beauty’s debut album, ‘vs Head vs Heart’ . The track is 4 minutes and 45 seconds of transcendent, airy polyphonic beats. The overlapping words and melodies make way for a tranquil, and meditative song. “Pontoon” is definitely a track worthy of your time.

“I Am Not” is the first single off the first EP by the newly formed folk duo Bard and Mustache. As far as debuts go, “I Am Not” is a lot of things. Right off the back, lead singer Erin Murphy claims that she is not a “song bird,” and she is also, “unable to put you asleep.” While a musician’s ability to put someone to sleep is not always considered a compliment, with their soothing vocals and comforting cello, it’s easy to argue with Murphy that she is perfectly capable of providing an elegant soundtrack to drift you off into your dreams.

With a steady acoustic guitar blanketed by Greg Bortnichak’s cello consistency throughout the song, there’s multiple times where the cello stands out alone, flickering back and forth like a candlelight in the darkness of Murphy’s lyrics and vocals.

There’s a point at around 3:40 into the song where everything pauses for a moment, and just as Murphy sings, “Your dreams are the ocean,” Bortnichak’s cello accompanies these dreams, sounding like a whale singing off in the distance of this ocean they’ve created.
Then everything concludes together in dramatic fashion, cello, guitar, vocals building up and racing together towards the end, where Murphy concludes the song by stating, “It’s dark and I cannot swim.”

We can only hope that Bard and Mustache do not drown in their own sound and continue making haunting, beautiful songs such as “I Am Not” totally is.
