Allison Weiss is a talented musician and songwriter who has caught my attention recently. “The Same” is from her new album “New Love” that was released in October.

This song is about the thoughts that run around our brains. Her lyrics mostly describe sad or depressing thoughts, such as what someone wants to change about themselves. The main point of the song is that no one is alone in feeling less than perfect; everyone wants to change something, and everyone is the same.

The music for this song is very simple, which I enjoyed. That way, Weiss’s poetic lyrics have the spotlight. One of my favorite lines in the song is “We all have feelings we can’t explain, we’re all a little bit the same.”

Weiss’s angelic voice with the truthful lyrics makes this song so great. It’s about something real, something people struggle with. The song reminds people they are not alone, and sometimes that’s all people need.

https://youtu.be/-8CaLur5edw

If you are interested in learning more about Weiss you can check out her Wikipedia page. And if you want to listen to more of her excellent songs, you can find her on Spotify.
Coming at you for this week’s Track of the Week is “Trouble” by Cage The Elephant! As the second single off of the Bowling Green, Kentucky natives’ newest album, “Trouble” is a perfect easy-listening, lazy afternoon tune. The track is smack-dab in the middle of the band’s fourth album, Tell Me I’m Pretty, produced by The Black Key’s Dan Auerbach.

Full of soft harmonies and Matt Shultz’s classic “oooohs,” “Trouble” is able to put fans’ minds to rest after the first single from Tell Me I’m Pretty, “Mess Around,” was a little, should we say, too Black Keys-ish? Not to say “Mess Around” wasn’t an interesting change of style for the band, but “Trouble” shines with the unique Cage The Elephant sound that’s all their own.

Reminiscent of previous tracks like “Shake Me Down” and “Hypocrite,” “Trouble” encapsulates dreamy guitars and soft percussion (if you listen closely, you can even hear sleigh bells) into a song that ebbs and flows with Cage The Elephant’s poetic lyrics that manage to say so much while saying so little. Shultz finishes out the song by softly singing “Got so much to lose/ Got so much to prove/ God don’t let me lose my mind,” really hitting the track home.

Listening to “Trouble” feels a bit like riding a merry-go-round, slow and steady enough for you to close your eyes, but builds just enough suspense to make you want to hold on tight. Only Cage The Elephant could capture sheer inner-turmoil in such a soothing way.

Check out “Trouble” below, and if you dig it, Tell Me I’m Pretty is out now for your listening pleasure. Also keep an eye out for our upcoming review of the album!

New album means new tour so make sure to hit up the band’s page for tour updates, as well as follow them on Twitter, Tumblr, and Instagram for various other band shenanigans.

This week’s featured track is “Unsteady” by X Ambassadors, a American alternative rock back from Ithaca, New York. The song is featured off of their new album VHS and is one of the more soulful songs on the album.

X Ambassadors at The Fonda Theatre

This song had me hooked from the very beginning when you first hear Sam Harris’s almost angelic voice belt out “Hold, Hold on, Hold on to me” while is brother Casey Harris is softly playing piano in the background. The powerful lyrics are really what makes this song so great; they are very moving and so heartfelt. The piano is soon joined by hard drum beats that just hook into you even deeper . Having both the piano and drums was definitely a great choice. It makes for a well-rounded track. Harris’s soulful voice kept me enthralled the whole time, and the sad vibe is perfect for when you are down in the dumps. It hits you right in the feels, especially when he sings, “Daddy, I’m alone. Cause this house don’t feel like home”.

“Unsteady” is one of those songs I could listen on repeat for hours when I’m in one of those moods because of it’s all over melancholy tone. X Ambassadors debut album VHS is full of incredible songs that are less slow, and sad compared to “Unsteady”. The whole album is available on iTunes, you can also check out the track below.

The post Track of the Week: “Love Me” By The 1975 appeared first on KRUI Radio.

This week’s lick of fresh sound comes from the Manchester-based rock band The 1975, with their newest release, Love Me. Popularized by their 2013 single, Chocolate, this alternative rock band eagerly made their musical comeback last month after several years of touring the same album. But this time around, they’re taking things in a new direction.

Love Me – Album Cover (Photo via trendom.co)

That being said, this track is close to nothing like anything on their debut self-titled album. The band proclaimed an end to their grungy, sorrowful aesthetic, and Love Me is well representative of this change of sound. The single—its album cover sporting a neon pastel pink contrast to the dreary black and white of previous covers—is an upbeat tune that is sure to resonate with anyone who vibes with psychedelic 80’s jams.

Love Me strongly comes off as a positive, feel-good song that is also lightly charged with a commentary on fame and lifestyle in its lyrics. It’s almost hard to recognize “what a shame” it is that “you’re reading about yourself on a plane” when the beat is so easy to groove with. A heavier, further criticism lies in lines “you’ve got a beautiful face but got nothing to say” and “we’ve just come to represent a decline in the standards of what we accept.” Even though this song’s chorus feels light-hearted and fun, the band still follows through with embedding its usual thought-provoking lyrics.

There is much to look forward to as this track serves as the first single off their upcoming album set to release in 2016, I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware Of It. Without a doubt, The 1975 successfully deliver with Love Me: a taste of their new sound and musical mood, but also a treat for any fan’s music library.

Watch the music video for Love Me below, and check out The 1975 on touring the U.S. this winter.

This song is the opening track on their new album, Vessels, and is a good testament to the album as a whole.

(photo via: rahrahband.com)

This track is so fun because it gets going right from the start– the first sounds heard are a quick drum feature that moves quickly into an upbeat guitar/drum combination. A male vocalist soon is added to the conglomeration, and shoots the listener straight into the first verse.

What really makes this track is the addition of female backup vocals. These backup vocals mimic the chorus in a really clean and precise manner, which adds a bit of clarity to the murky voice of the male singer.

This track maintains an exciting, upbeat vibe throughout most of its duration. The guitar and drums that drove the beat from the beginning continue to keep the song progressive. Though one of the middle verses is slower and almost melancholy, the background instrumentals pull this verse back to the previous quick tempo where the song began. The song ends with a final guitar stroke and drum crash to conclude its fast progression.

“Be Your Man,” as well as the entirety of Vessels, is available on iTunes. Check out the track below:

"Past Life" by Tame Impala provides insight into the strange, creepy nature of the entire album.

From the album “Currents,” Tame Impala‘s song “Past Life,” is this week’s Track of the Week, and provides insight into the strange, creepy nature of the entire album, just like the weird GIF below.

The Australian band released their third album, “Currents,” in July of 2015 and watched it skyrocket to the top of numerous music charts. Although the general public clearly enjoyed this album, I thought most of the songs sounded the same and followed similar structure. They were all pretty disturbing and eerie, but one song seemed especially freaky.

Like all the other songs on this album, this one begins with dream sequence-esque. However, unlike other songs, a deep, distorted voice begins discussing his mundane routine of picking up his dry-cleaning when suddenly seeing his “lover from a past life.”

The rest of the song seems to just repeat the words “past life” with the distorted voice sporadically explaining the relationship he may or may not have had with this woman on top of a repetitive melodic phrase. While I did not like the song, I can’t say the tune isn’t catchy; I could hardly stop humming the song after listening to it once. Those few hours were awful.

This song which addresses so many issues ranging from reincarnation, to denial, to the resurfacing of memories in dreams; perhaps the person to whom this mysterious voice belongs would be Freud’s ideal subject to study.

Although Halloween has ended, if you’d like to experience the strange spookiness of the track, you can listen to it below.

Unless you’re a superhuman with incredibly discerning ears, you may have trouble understanding what the singer/speaker says in the song. Here are the lyrics to help you fully experience the uncanny. To listen to the whole album, you can access the YouTube playlist or download it on iTunes.

This week’s Track of the Week is the single, “Everywhere I Go (Kings and Queens)” by New Politics.

New Politics is a Danish rock band who released their third studio album “Vikings,” in August of this year. The album has high energy with an upbeat and catchy punk indie rock feel.

“Everywhere I Go (Kings and Queens)”’s underlying meaning is when you feel like you are nothing, you should stand up and prove that you are somebody, because there are others that feel just like you.

There’s evidence of that in the lyrics “this one’s for everyone that said I’m nothing/This one’s for my friends that don’t give a f**k.”

New Politics does a fantastic job of writing about things that aren’t superficial. They make this song loud and make it command attention which is the perfect way to distract yourself when you feel upset or when you feel like rocking out.

This is a great song for when you’re driving around town, or when you just want to escape the world. The lyrics “We’ve been up, we’ve been down, we got over it/ Everywhere we go, we’re the kings and queens, and we run this city” allude to the fact of wanting to rock out and feel like you are on top of the world.

Since the song has numerous cuss words, it probably shouldn’t be played where there are children or parents around but play it if you just don’t give a f**k.

Listen to “Everywhere I Go” below and listen to the full album on Itunes, and check the band out on Facebook.

Philadelphia-born Kurt Vile has released his 6th studio album b’lieve i’m goin down… and while folk-grunge may not be “hip,” Vile certainly puts up a fight. Our Track of the Week, is off of the new release.

His banjo-heavy first track “Pretty Pimpin” makes quite an impression, sporting dark lyrics like “I proceeded to brush some stranger’s teeth, but they were my teeth,” and “Who’s this stupid clown blocking the bathroom sink? But he was sporting my clothes,”contrasted by almost-upbeat instrumentals.

Another interesting – if not straight-up quirky – feature of “Pretty Pimpin” is Vile’s creative use of vowels sounds. “Mirror” becomes “meerror” and “man” becomes “may-en,” giving the track a laid-back, easy feel. Vile described the album to Rolling Stone as a whole as having “…that night vibe…KV’s Night Life…” which is definitely true. I close my eyes, and visions of restless nights and dark car rides creep into my mind. A great track to listen to at night in bed or in the middle of the day driving down the road, “Pretty Pimpin” will have you air-strumming along with the banjo, and wondering what stranger’s teeth you’ll be brushing in the morning…

Listen to “Pretty Pimpin” below and listen to the whole album on Spotify or buy it on iTunes.

Canadian band Metric’s sixth album, Pagans in Vegas, was released earlier last month, but this Track of the Week has been available to the public since early May. While many of the tracks on the new album feature the band’s signature synth-heavy, alternative sound, “The Shade” stands out with its prominent synth-and-drumbeat intro, with lead vocalist Emily Haines drifting through dreamy verses and bridge, breaking into an elated chorus of “I want it all, I want it all”, all with a driving beat behind it. “The Shade” is an optimistic tune that’s certain to lift your spirits whenever you hear it, especially when playing the song with your band on a rooftop at sunset. At least, that’s what the music video leads me to believe.

You can listen to “The Shade” below, which is available on iTunes along with the rest of Pagans in Vegas.

While their first album, 2013’s California X, put the band on the map, the Track of the Week comes from their brand new sophomore effort Nights in the Dark. Toning down the fuzz, and hoping to distance themselves from their clear Dinosaur Jr. influence, Nights in the Dark shows the band hitting their stride and beginning to develop a more unique sound. The opener “Nights in the Dark,” is filled with loud and distorted guitars briskly running through some great riffs, while the catchy vocals hold the song together for the full 5:32.
