Bright skies welcomed the last day of Mission Creek on April 9th, breaking a streak of grey clouds covering Iowa City. I interviewed Soccer Mommy and her manager in the outdoor seating area of Quinton’s (next door to the Englert), one of the many places with outdoor Portable Tiered Seating on the bright day.

During the interview Soccer Mommy mentioned that her upcoming album Sometimes, Forever strays from Color Theory’s nostalgic recollection of the 90’s and 00’s, this time opting for “electronic… and ambient elements,” featuring more “glitchy” songs similar to her 2021 single “rom com 2004.” In addition, vocals will be a more prominent part of the album, featuring sections of Sophie Allison’s isolated vocals as well as intricate three-part harmonies, “not just ‘oohs and ahhs’, like instruments.”

Seats filled up quickly before Soccer Mommy’s 9:30 set. The concert featured some of Soccer Mommy’s hits, such as “Circle the Drain,” and “Cool.” In between songs Soccer Mommy’s instrumentalists included ambient sounds with veins of distortion, captivating the audience while members switched instruments. Allison, both the vocalist and guitarist, switched between her three different guitars onstage.

Soccer Mommy performed introspective songs such as “Royal Screw Up” as well. Hints at Soccer Mommy’s new sound for the upcoming album can be heard in her newest single “Shotgun.”

The Englert Theater’s light system provided an other-worldly experience with darker shades of purple, blue, and red, as well as a rich green light that flashed behind the stage. People in the audience were dancing the entire show, especially a cluster of dancers on the left side of the stage.

The concert included superb performances from drummer Rollum Haas and keyboardist/guitarist Rodrigo Avendano. Haas delivered a fierce, commanding drumbeat and increased the complexity of his fills compared to his tracks on the album, giving avid listeners a different live sound. Avendano, the guitarist behind the main riffs in hits such as “Your Dog” and “Circle the Drain” was active whenever he was on stage, sometimes switching between playing the lead guitar and harmonizing keyboard in the same song.

Overall, Soccer Mommy earned the headline spot at Mission Creek Festival with their bright-sounding indie underpinning the deeper, darker meaning looming in the lyrics. Sometimes, Forever releases June 24th and can be pre-ordered through her website.

Soccer Mommy returns to the Englert Theatre this weekend as an established indie rock artist whose sound recalls the 90’s and 00’s guitar dominated rock-era, this time as Mission Creek’s headliner. Sophia Allison, the mind behind Soccer Mommy, is from Nashville and her influences range from Kacey Musgraves to Avril Lavigne. Her sound has evolved from guitar-leading indie to a blend of genres with increased production value. Her most recent album, Color Theory, is a great starting point in her discography.

(image via Jonny Look)

Color Theory deals with Allison’s mental health and feelings of isolation by categorizing them by color to create a spectrum of her emotions. Allison reestablishes herself as a skilled guitar player of catchy riffs in an album filled with hits such as Circle the Drain, a song that features tinges of distortion and floating vocals paired with deeply personal lyrics. Drawing from this sound is one of her recent singles, rom com 2004. Its ambient sound blends with her vocal range incredibly well as it builds up to a heavenly, love-struck chorus.

Her most recent single Shotgun hints at the sound of her next album, Sometimes, Forever, due to be released July 22nd, 2022. Some of her songs dip into her country influences such as Wide Open Spaces, a cover of The Chicks. Her music videos portray a wide range of visuals. From Your Dog which features a colorful high-school setting filled with pastels drawings from the song’s message. Scorpio Rising‘s video matches dream-like lighting with the song’s nostalgic themes.

Soccer Mommy plays at 9:15pm Saturday, April 9th in the Englert Theatre. Mission Creek festival passes are purchasable through their website.

Soccer Mommy is coming to Iowa City Saturday, April 9th at the Englert Theater as part of Mission Creek Festival. Soccer Mommy, or Sophie Allison, is a Nashville-based artist that got her start in 2015 by posting home-studio songs to Bandcamp. In 2016, she released her first album, For Young Hearts, and released her second album, Collection, in 2017. Soccer Mommy’s proper debut album, Clean, was released in 2018 and was followed in 2020 by her album color theory. So far in her career, Soccer Mommy has toured with Kacey Musgraves, Phoebe Bridgers, Mitski, Foster the People, Paramore, and Vampire Weekend. With this impressive touring history we are over the moon to have her in Iowa City!

When it comes to her music, Soccer Mommy fits with the indie-rock genre. Inspired by pop music, catchy elements are included in her songs. She’s cited Avril Lavigne, Mitski, and Natalie Imbruglia as influences as well. Soccer Mommy is known for her realistic portrayals relating to mental illness and family. If you like Snail Mail, Mitski, Lucy Dacus, or Julien Baker, you’ll definitely want to catch this show.
