Pittsburgh – It was a tale of two halves and two quarterbacks for the Iowa Hawkeyes as it gets the comeback win 24-20 in Pittsburgh thanks to the strong play of Quarterback C.J. Beathard.

Damond Powell made an incredible one-handed catch that set the tone for Iowa’s comeback win. (gif: Yahoo Sports)

Beathard came into the game in relief of an injured Jake Rudock to start the second half and led Iowa on a quick 3:18 touchdown drive that included a spectacular 62-yard pass to Damond Powell. Powell found redemption after aiding in an interception early in the game.

“[On that pass]I just needed to be determined to make that play, whether it was with one hand or two,” Powell said. “When your number is called you have to be able to make the play.”

Beathard set the tone for the rest of the game with that explosive play and credited Powell for making the catch. Powell only had the one reception but that one play set up the 10-yard Mark Weisman touchdown that cut Iowa’s deficit to 17-14.

“It was a great catch. Honestly, I thought I had overthrown him at first and then he made that one-handed grab,” Beathard said. “I saw him make a break and just put it where I thought he would be and he made the catch.”

Even without passing for a touchdown, Beathard led two touchdown drives and a third drive that ended with a 52-yard field goal by Marshall Koehn.

On just his third play in action, Beathard found Kevonte Martin-Manley for a 7-yard gain that got the Iowa offense rolling out of the half. The Iowa defense had just gotten a critical stop and Iowa was in need of points to keep itself in the game.

“Had we gone three and out, the game could have gone differently,” Beathard said. “It was a big play to get that drive started.”

Sophomore QB C.J.
Of course, when a backup comes into a game, there is a reason. Rudock looked to have been shaken up on his last play of the first half. Head Coach Kirk Ferentz did not seem to think the injury was too serious.

“Jake was injured there at the end of the first half,” Ferentz said. “We don’t expect it to be serious and he should be fine tomorrow.”

When an athlete goes down with an injury, the immediate concern is always their health and ability to return to play. In Beathard’s case, stepping in for an injured starter can change the course of a game, but for the player sidelined, the focus shifts to recovery.

Sports injuries are an unfortunate reality, and while some are minor setbacks, others can have lasting consequences.

Teams and medical staff work quickly to assess the severity of an injury, ensuring that players are not rushed back onto the field before they are fully healed. Whether it’s a minor sprain or a more serious concussion, proper evaluation and rehabilitation are crucial to keeping athletes safe and extending their careers.

Beyond the game, injuries can have serious legal and financial implications, particularly when they occur due to negligence or unsafe conditions. This is where legal expertise becomes essential, ensuring that injured individuals receive the support they need. Gammill Law specializes in personal injury cases, advocating for those who have suffered harm, whether in sports or everyday life.

Athletes—both professional and amateur—deserve proper medical care and legal protection when injuries impact their future. From securing compensation for medical expenses to holding responsible parties accountable, experienced legal representation plays a vital role in injury recovery and long-term well-being.

Slip and fall accidents can also be just as devastating as sports-related injuries, often leading to serious physical and financial burdens. Whether it’s a wet gym floor, poorly maintained facilities, or unexpected hazards, these incidents can have lasting consequences. When negligence is involved, holding the responsible parties accountable becomes crucial. A Law Firm Florida with expertise in personal injury cases can help victims navigate the complexities of legal claims, ensuring they receive the compensation needed for medical bills, rehabilitation, and lost wages.

Beyond athletes, everyday individuals are also at risk of slip and fall accidents in public spaces, workplaces, and private properties. A simple misstep on an unmarked wet floor or a cracked sidewalk can result in fractures, head injuries, or long-term mobility issues. Legal representation ensures that those affected aren’t left to handle the aftermath alone. By taking legal action, victims not only secure financial support but also promote safer environments, preventing similar accidents from happening to others.

The importance of quick, accurate injury assessments cannot be overstated, especially for athletes who rely on their physical health for their careers. Proper rehabilitation ensures their recovery and safety, preventing further damage and allowing them to return to the field when they are truly ready.

If you’re facing the aftermath of an injury, whether it’s from a sports incident or an accident in daily life, it’s vital to seek legal guidance. For a comprehensive approach, visit Muller Brazil website, where a team of experts, consultants, and experienced legal professionals offer their services across various personal injury law areas. Their extensive experience helps victims navigate the complex legal process, ensuring that all aspects of an injury claim are addressed with the expertise they deserve.

Navigating a personal injury claim isn’t just about filing paperwork—it’s about rebuilding lives after a setback. A committed personal injury lawyer works not only to secure compensation but to ensure that your voice is heard and your rights are protected. With experience in uncovering negligence and building solid cases, these professionals bring both compassion and tenacity to the table—qualities that are essential when you’re trying to reclaim your quality of life.

Ferentz was pleased with the way that Beathard played in relief. The team needed a boost on both sides of the ball and after looking lost in the first half, Beathard came in and answered the call.

“C.J. came in and did a great job and really led our team. We have confidence in both [quarterbacks] and know that we have two really good football players,” Ferentz said. “C.J. came in and made some really big plays.”

Beathard has had limited chances to get snaps during game time dating back to the start of the 2013 season. While he is not guaranteed to start next week, he knows he has to take advantage of the time he gets and just enjoy playing.

“It was fun to get out there and win a game, especially like that,” Beathard said. “Getting a few series in there and getting some rhythm was important. I just try and go out there and make the best of every opportunity I can.”

Pittsburgh – After losing to their biggest rival at home last week, the Iowa Hawkeyes had to forget what happened and travel out east to Heinz Field to take on the Pittsburgh Panthers out of the ACC.

In a game that seemed to be positioned toward a blowout at halftime, Iowa responded from being outplayed in the first half to come out with a 24-20 victory over Pitt.

The Hawkeyes came out flat to start the game on both sides of the ball, allowing numerous big plays to running back James Conner and wide receiver Tyler Boyd.

The Panthers started the scoring on their first drive of the game on a 14-yard run from Chris James to give Pitt the 7-0 lead. Running the ball was a common theme in the Panther offense, totaling 185 yards on the day against a very good Iowa rushing defense. Conner led the charge for the Panthers on the ground carrying the ball 29 times for 155 yards and a touchdown.

Iowa, however, responded right back on the ensuing drive going 75 yards on 7 plays capped off by a 13-yard touchdown pass

Junior TE Henry Krieger Coble catches a first quarter touchdown vs Pitt (AP Photo/Gene Puskar)

from quarterback Jake Rudock to Henry Krieger-Coble to tie the game. Rudock finished his afternoon completing five of his ten passes for 80 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

Pitt took control of the game after that, adding a touchdown run from Conner and a 33-yard field goal from Chris Blewitt making the halftime score 17-7.

Coach Kirk Ferentz must have said the right things coming out of locker room after halftime, as Iowa came out sharp in every facet of the game and outscored the Panthers 17-3 in the second half.

In the second half, a change in quarterback seemed to jumpstart the stagnant Hawkeye offense. C.J. Beathard replaced Jake Rudock to begin the second half and immediately made his presence known in different ways. His highlight of the afternoon was a 63-yard completion to Damond Powell, who caught it one-handed, that set up Mark Weisman’s first touchdown of the game from 10 yards out to cut the deficit to 17-14.

“It feels good to have an adrenaline rush and go out there and play,” Beathard said after the game. “I just try to go out there and make the best of every opportunity I can.”

Beathard finished with 98 yards passing; completing seven of his eight passes.

After the teams exchanged field goals, Iowa took the lead for good on a 1-yard touchdown by Weisman to give the Hawkeyes the final margin of victory.

Coach Ferentz was proud of the effort of his team after the heartbreaking defeat last weekend.

“We are just very happy to get the win today. It didn’t come easy,” Ferentz said. “Pitt is a very good and tough football team, but I’m very proud of our guys.”

“Our staff did a good job of making adjustments after the first half, but I give a lot of credit to the players on making changes as well.”

On the defensive side of the ball, John Lowdermilk led the charge with eleven tackles seven of them solo. Louis Trinca-Pasat and Quinton Alston were close behind with eight and seven tackles respectively. Drew Ott had the only sack of the game for either side corralling Panther quarterback Chad Voytik.

The lone turnover forced by the Hawkeyes sealed the game as Anthony Gair picked off a Voytik pass in the waning seconds of the fourth quarter to put an end to the Panther’s potential game-winning drive.

The Hawkeye defense as a whole took some steps forward after the debacle last week, and this will hopefully be a tipping point in the right direction going into next week.

Iowa will travel to West Lafayette to take on the Purdue Boilermakers to open Big Ten Conference play next Saturday. Kickoff is set for 11:00.
