The Iowa Youth Writing Project held its book fair at The Mill in Iowa City this Saturday. The non-profit was founded by University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop graduates in 2010 and aims to inspire Iowa’s youth through literature. Countless publishing companies based in locations from Chicago, New York, and even England were in attendance to show off some of their newest and most popular work. Tables were decorated with beautifully illustrated covers and innovative bindings.

Long Day Press publishing logo.
Long Day Press is a “hand-bound chapbook publisher.” Each piece is “literally sewn and bound by hand in my living room,” said Editor Joshua Bohnsack. Displayed on the table were the Long Day Press Journals, which are petite books made out of beer boxes. Other pieces contain prose, poems, and other short stories of fiction and surrealism.

Perhaps the most eye-catching was a medium-sized rustic looking wooden box with some words and a martini glass engraved into it. This “box” is actually a poetry book entitled “Burnt Sienna: Cocktails and Stories” by Joshua Bohnsack. Inside are 15 recipe cards with a cocktail recipe on the front and a bar story on the back.

One of the purposes of the fair is to promote marginalized voices in society. Based in Chicago, The Poetry Foundation publishes “Poetry” magazine, which, according to the foundation’s website,” exists to discover and celebrate the best poetry and to place it before the largest possible audience.”

Patrick Samuel, one of the foundation’s representatives for the fair, elaborated on the process of choosing literature for the issues. Quality is not the only factor to consider when choosing which pieces to publish. The foundation prefers to publish perspectives that are not often prevalent in society. Therefore, the Poetry Foundation welcomes anyone to share their work with them. “Our open door policy is very important to us in order to be as inclusive as possible to our writers,” Samuel said. Poetry magazine is published monthly, and its next issue will focus on Transgender and LGBT perspectives.

Poetry Magazine’s April issue. (Photo via the Poetry Foundation.)

Joe Tiefenhaler, who is in charge of literary programming for Mission Creek, helps to organize the fair. “The focus of this has always been independent presses and literary magazines, so all these people are outside of major publishing industry,” “A lot of them run it out of their own homes and garages and a lot of them are emerging authors and they put out some really beautiful work.”

Holding a two-foot-high stack of books he bought at the fair, Tiefenhaler was obviously passionate about these authors. He enjoys, not only helping these individuals gain traction, but indulging in their work himself. Making the book fair a bigger focal point of the festival is one of his goals through literary programming.

Joe Tiefenhaler (left) speaks at a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Chauncy complex in downtown Iowa City.
The Iowa Youth Project book fair is a unique event. It isn’t often that one gets to encounter so much literary talent in one place. The fair does not feature famous artists, and that is the entire point. Each author was extremely modest, conversational, and excited to promote his/her work while having a beer with those attending. The fair fits so perfectly into Mission Creek’s lineup and fills a niche that Iowa City so desperately needed. If you enjoy raw talent, look no further.

As the Mission Creek Festival begins to wrap up, I’m reminiscing on the shows I’ve been to in the past — none of them, however, can top what I just saw: Julien Baker at The Englert. Honestly, it was such a fantastic show. She was originally supposed to play at Gabe’s, but she sold that out so quickly that they decided to move her show to The Englert.

I showed up about an hour before her set and watched one of her openers — Squirrel Flower. I’m not here to review Squirrel Flower, but damn, they blew me away. The lead singer has a voice similar to Julien Baker’s, which made them the perfect opening act.

Image via DC Music Download

Finally, the lights dimmed, and Julien Baker casually walked on stage in her all-black outfit. She’s a tiny woman, but she is full of passion, which was apparent from the very first song.

Soft white lights beamed down on her as dark blue lights set the perfect backdrop for her slow, mellow songs. Her music is so mellow and quiet that you could hear pretty much everything that was going on in the audience — knuckles cracking, people flipping through programs, the clicks of a camera every time a picture was taken.

Image via Band Camp

It was relaxing, though, to see a set like this. Honestly, Baker could put me to sleep — and that’s saying a lot, and I mean that in the best way possible. Her voice is so soothing, her guitar and piano work so smooth, and the softness in her music just makes me want to curl up and drift away. It’s very atmospheric, which I love so much.

At one point, she had a violinist join her for a couple songs, and w.o.w. it was amazing. The violin added so much dimension to her songs, so much that it almost made me regret taking up the clarinet and not the violin in middle school.

Image via The New York Times

Baker switched between her electric guitar, acoustic guitar, and piano. Honestly, she’s so talented — normally I don’t see many artists switch it up that many times in a show.

One of the things I loved most were the mistakes she made — for example, she hit the mic stand with her guitar, took a step back, and bowed. It was so refreshing to see that she’s just a normal person like you and me. Which tbh, she kinda is — she’s only like a year older than me. Her sense of humor during that was one of the highlights of the night.

After singing a slow and mellow song, she would softly say “Thank you,” into the microphone.

Sprained Ankle by Julien Baker.

Baker is a singer/songwriter from Tennessee, and she released her debut album in 2015 called “Sprained Ankle” on Bandcamp. Her most recent LP, “Turn Out The Lights,” just came out in 2017. Her music is the perfect music to chill to, vibe to, cry to, study to, etc.

The night soon wrapped up, and Baker walked off the stage just as casually as she came on. I’ve been to a lot of Mission Creek shows, so believe me when I say that this was one of the best.

Nils Frahm, a German pianist, composer, and electronic jack of all trades, snatched the collective breath away from a crowd of hundreds at the Englert Theatre nine days ago with a number of cuts from his magisterial new record, “All Melody.”

Speaking about it, but more broadly about his approach and process, he curtly opined “I think we’ll look back and realize that there has never been a point in history where we’ve taken art so seriously.”

The comment puzzled me for ways I couldn’t quite explain, so I pushed it to the back of my mind.

Image via Pop Matters

Image via Reid Botkin

Only a short while spent with the music of Des Moines’ Extravision reveals a blunt reinforcement of Frahm’s belief, that nearly excessive attention to detail is the essence and lifeblood of streams of artists today.

For musicians like Ryan Stier, who fronts the group, it isn’t so much a choice as a requirement; an obligation to explore ideas all the way down to their most refined core.

The shadowy aesthetic of The Mill in Iowa City, in pairing with a crowd embracing the musical lovefest that is Mission Creek, refracted their acute awareness through a magnifying glass of accepting arms and ears.

A debut album title like “Waking Up”, released this February, does little to dispel the notion that Extravision is anything other than a serious band for serious times, whose musical ethos seeks awareness and understanding far beyond the surface level.

Their method of delivery, however, is far less consistent. Friday night’s show saw flirtations with a range of genres, sometimes even within the same song; opener “Still, Up in The Clouds”, floated majestically on the back of textured Stratocaster drenched in reverb and tremolo, in the same vein as Chicago shoegazers, Airiel.

The climax boasted equal fluidity and control as the five-piece climbed together, kickstarting a set as polished and well-composed as it was emotionally affecting.

Image via Reid Botkin

In contrast to the initial extended jams, which felt buoyant and atmospheric around enveloping delay effects, Stier’s 12-string guitar strummings turned inward on the band’s collective meditations, which touched on mortality (“Moments of Clarity”), purpose, loss, and transition over the course of forty short minutes.

The shimmering sounds of the steel strings held up beautifully alongside guitar leads of increasing intensity and drive, and the occasional punch of overdrive or phaser.

In either case, whether raucous or subdued, balance is fully realized with keys, bass, and rhythm that refused to be overbearing, but rather an accessory to Stier’s psychedelic creations.

On “The Dark Where I Could Only Hear”, a true manifestation of the band’s sonic identity, acoustic textures were smartly woven with jabs of electric guitar touching higher octaves.

Combined with an expressively coherent vocal delivery that aptly filled narrow gaps in the arrangement, it was hard not to be reminded of fellow-Iowan Dick Prall’s voice but washed over with a backing of modulated effects and decay.

The full-blown instrumental push over multiple minutes was carried out with reckless abandon, at least as much as could be mustered for a group with such care and focus. Few groups warrant as direct a comparison to Philadelphia rockers The War on Drugs, and the drone squeezed out in the final seconds of the track confirmed why.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gf0r9TjlzU4

For as unabashedly as Extravision resides in the vapor trail of post-Woodstock Americana and psychedelia, make no mistake- they aren’t ripping anybody off. Stier’s pensive songwriting and honest delivery boast uniqueness that can only be fully understood in front of one’s own eyes.

Led by curious minds and ears, and a clear sense of direction, whatever this group is searching for, I’d bet that they’ll find it.

Horse Feathers started their set to a slightly buzzed crowd shortly after 10, right after a very surprised Counterfeit Madison wrapped up their encore to the sound of “One more song!” from the audience.

The Mill was a perfect venue for this folksy country group. Dana T, opened the night and got the crowd going with a full 8 member band (including the horn section). After that was an impressive performance by Counterfeit Madison, a slightly heavier rock band, followed by Horse Feathers closing out the evening. Normally, bands at the Mill all have a similar sound or are rooted in the same genre at least, but not in this case. The variety of styles from jazz to rock to folk showing up from band to band kept the night interesting, and the audience from finding another way to spend their Thursday.

Image via Grass Clippings Blog

As someone who wasn’t very familiar with Horse Feathers going in, it’s safe to say that I am definitely a fan after this concert. Their folksy rock sound hooked me from the beginning. They had the perfect blend of slow to uptempo songs throughout the night and even got some tipsy fans out on the dance floor. They went across genres a few times sounding more country at times, and sounding like an indie rock group at others.

The instruments and talent of the band members were impressive as. Lead singer and guitarist Justin Ringle had a smooth country sounding voice that paired well with his acoustic guitar. Other members were a violinist that gave the band a different sound at times- southern? Irish maybe? Either way, he clearly had talent that went well with the easy going drums and bass (who sometimes switched over to strings). Another aspect that stood out to me about Horse Feathers as a whole, was the fact that it was clear they were doing what they loved, and at times you could see them getting lost in their own music, singing and playing so effortlessly.

Image via BandCamp

Horse Feathers has a new album coming out in May (check out their two newest singles “Don’t Mean to Pry” and “Without Applause” for a sneak peek at what’s to come). Even though their last album, “So It Is With Us” has been out since 2014, the audience was captivated by favorites like “Belly of June” and “Thistled Spring”, a song from one of their even earlier albums.

Image via Haley Bean

I can’t think of a better way to spend a Thursday night than at this show. The relaxed setting and music put out a vibe that was perfect for unwinding after a long day, while still knowing you have to get up for work tomorrow. Ringle has a voice that you could kick back and listen to all day.

On the third day of Mission Creek 2018, Dana T performed at The Mill.

Dana T (Image via: Mission Creek Festival)

I had heard of Dana T before, but only as a part of the band Karen Meat (also playing Mission Creek on Friday the 6th!) While I had heard his album a few times, I didn’t listen to it too much. I was looking forward to attending the show so I could get a grasp of his individual sound, as much as I love Karen Meat.

When I walked into The Mill half an hour before Dana T’s set began, I noticed that there weren’t a lot of people who looked my age. There were many middle-aged or older people there, and the venue was occupied, but not full. People had found their friends and were ordering food and drinks.

And, as is usual at a concert as beautifully intimate as those at The Mill, some audience members had me wondering why those who choose to sit front and center are always the ones screaming conversation over the musician. But the music was about to be loud anyway, so thankfully it was easy to tune out.

Dana T (Image via: Iowa City Press-Citizen)

After taking my time to settle in, Dana T took the stage with seven band members (one each behind a guitar, string bass, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, keyboard, and drums) and began his set. “This is a song I wrote, but you won’t understand what it’s about. Not because of you, because of me.”

He continues to play a jazzy, rock-y, disco-spirit-y set that has the whole venue swaying. It was upbeat and sometimes toned down, but always very fun. There were layers to every song, and each was just as interesting and essential as the next. It’s like the music was architecture.

There is something about his stage presence that exists both as he performs with Karen Meat and on his own. He moves with the music and as one with his guitar in a way I haven’t seen another artist do.

(Image via Twitter)

I’d noticed a saxophone on stage and had put it to the back of my mind, assuming it would be used during a later set and not Dana T’s. While sax (and other brass) had been featured on his album, I wasn’t expecting him to bring a brass trio on stage to perform with him.

There are a lot of people with much more fame that wouldn’t have done that and opted for a smaller show with fewer band members instead. Not only did he make the show more authentic to the sounds he releases on his album, but he didn’t let more than two songs go by without talking about how great his band members were.

This gesture in itself shows that Dana T. puts care into his music they way the instruments interacted with each other and the rhythm they created can’t be described as anything but care. There was more in this than a gig for him, and I’m glad I got to witness it.

This concert was intoxicatingly cute and sweet, needless to say, I enjoyed this performance very much. The Weepies kick-started their first stop on their 10th Anniversary Tour Thursday night in a truly grand fashion at The Englert. I went into the show knowing very little about this adorable duo but after the night was over I now understand how they sold more than a million records and have such a loyal fan base.

I was surprised by the wide variety of fans in the audience, ages from 5 years-old to 75 years-old were in attendance. I don’t want to paint this band as a simple small family band because they rocked the house in a grand way that anyone could dig it. There were some bumps and rust dusting that happened very rarely but the duo was always quick with a joke and recovered in a very charming and professional way. The energy in the audience was that of people who were all enjoying their time and were all happy to be seeing this musical group.

Image Via Static

Deb Talan and Steve Tannen’s cute personalities truly did shine bright and complemented their folk-pop style music. Deb and Tannen’s little anecdotes were both entertaining and enduring with topics ranging from the weather to porno. These two literally were making dad jokes and knock knock jokes, truly hitting my adorably soft spot on my heart. Their stage layout and lighting was simple but added a great effect to vibe.

The stage was set with quaint shrines on the left and right corners of the stage with the themes of the sea and the sun. The background was a changing combination of their logo of a hand drawn bird or whale. They were a joy to watch and listen to. At the end of the concert, they even gave away free glow in the dark stickers and buttons!

Image Via Mission Creek Festival

I really enjoyed their songs Crooked Smile, Fancy Things, and Be My Thrill. I highly recommend looking into their albums Say I Am You, Hideaway, and Sirens. This band is yet another reason why I have loved this year’s Mission Creek Festival. This event has brought truly a diverse and wide style of art, music, and literature to Iowa City.

I was shocked to learn that the couple live in Iowa City with three children. It’s always exciting to see local musicians like The Weepies play at venues and still going strong. Elizabeth Moen opened for The Weepies. Moen, a local Iowa City musician, has truly a very captivating voice that paired perfectly with her beautiful and haunting lyrics. Elizabeth Moen recently released a new album, That’s All I Wanted.

The Weepies’ Folk-Pop and Elizabeth Moen’s blues were a great combination of a show. I highly recommend looking into The Weepies and Elizabeth Moen, both can be found on Apple Music, Spotify and Amazon Music.

The Weepies tour dates are below. They are definitely a joy to watch and I would totally see them again!

Iowa City-based band Hot Tang played at Gabe’s Oasis on April 4th as part of Mission Creek Festival 2018. Described as “Iowa City’s only poolhaus band,” Hot Tang consists of Megan Buick, Anna Kahn, and Jason Burkhardt.

The upstairs of Gabe’s was stuffy and dimly lit save for faint strings of lights on the ceiling. The crowd hadn’t fully formed yet, as Hot Tang went on at 8:30, but for anyone in the crowd that early, they got a treat.

Three people. That’s all the band needs. Lead singer Megan Buick, who also played bass guitar, a piano and background vocals performed by Anna Kahn and a set of drums were all it took for Hot Tang to fill the room with dreamy, catchy, and infectious songs.

Reminiscent of Jenny Lewis, Beach House, and Sigur Ros, the beautiful harmonies are what carry Hot Tang throughout each song. The band has the unique ability to seamlessly weave sparse and simply catchy electronic piano and drums into something much more that ends up filling a room with people swaying their bodies back and forth.

Via Facebook

Most songs started off slow, with soft instrumentation centered around Buick’s laid-back lead vocals until momentum was gained and the song blew up into a full-blown rollicking pop song. Buick’s vocals are undeniably unique, and the effortlessness with which she coasts across songs is impressive. Lyrically, Buick takes a less-is-more approach like artists such as James Blake, opting for simple turns of phrases that repeat and grow with the music.

Via Band’s Facebook Page

One of the last songs performed on the night was “Secret Beach,” my personal favorite. The song built to a climax after Buick proclaimed, “I’m not havin’ any fun,” with a quiet backdrop until the whole band joined in and sent the song off on a high note. The dreamy soundscapes that Hot Tang creates are undeniably beautiful, and reminded me of a summertime drive in the sunshine with the windows rolled down.

The entire set performed by Hot Tang was infectious and filled with a great mixture of memorable lyrics and outstanding musicianship. Buick’s voice was fantastic live, and her laid-back delivery paired with the beauty of her voice was impressive.

The band’s latest release, titled Gone Fishin’, was released in 2017 and is available on BandCamp for $5. I’d highly recommend it for purchase, and also seeing the band live. The songs translate very well to a live setting and sound nearly identical to the studio versions.

It’s no surprise that when the Mission Creek Festival rolls around, some great artists come through as well. Tonight I got to see the all-girl band Younger at Gabe’s, and it was a hell of a time.

The Iowa City-based trio opened up with their new single, “Trash,” which is forthcoming on their sophomore album set to release soon.

According to their Facebook page, their set tonight included all of the songs on their new album. I really enjoyed the instrumentals to their songs, which I really found myself vibing out to.

Also, it’s nice to see some more girl bands on the scene, since it feels like we seriously lack them in the mainstream.

Younger. photo via: facebook.com/youngertheband

I asked my friend Melinda what she thought of them, and her response was spot on: “Imagine Barbie meeting 90’s grunge and hanging out with Kurt Cobain.”

Tbh, I can see it. They weren’t super grungy, but like, still kinda grungy. Ya know?

Their set was definitely a lot more lowkey, which is something I like after a day of dealing with classes and homework.

While I liked the performance, I usually enjoy performances with a little bit more stage presence from the band — they really vibed out and just kind of swayed around, which after a while gets old (if you’re not in the right mood). Nonetheless, you could tell there was a lot of heart and soul poured into their music.

I think this was a perfect set to be played at Gabe’s — as I’ve said before, and will a million times more, I love the vibe that Gabe’s gives. With the twinkly lights, dark setting, and good drinks, it’s hard to be unhappy there.

What I also enjoyed about this show was that it wasn’t overly packed — I’ve been to some bigger pop punk concerts at Gabe’s where my knees were smashed against the wall up at the front of the stage from people crowding themselves around you.

At this show, I was able to peacefully sip on my Angry Orchard without fearing that some hipster 16 year old would bump into me and cause me to spill all over myself.

The rest of the crowd seemed to be enjoying themselves too, with a select few at the front absolutely jamming out without a care in the world. I would say that they drew in a decent sized crowd, as it wasn’t too packed but not too empty either.

photo via facebook.com/youngertheband

Not convinced yet that you need to see them? Check out some of their promo pictures for some previous shows they’ve done. I mean, c’mon. You had me at hot Cheetos.

While I can’t find a for sure date on the release of this new album of theirs, I did find a video of fans talking about what the group sounds like and I think it’s pretty spectacular. Check it out here!

Oh. My. Gosh. Tonight, I had the opportunity to go review Dessa’s performance, and boy, am I glad that I did it!

It was absolutely amazing, I had such a good time! No need to feel the rush of FOMO, because I’m going to tell you all about it.

IMAGE VIA BELLA VOLFSON PHOTOGRAPHY

So to kick it off, Dessa started about fifteen minutes later than expected, but it was no big deal because Monakr was killing it on stage!

She came out in an army green jacket and some combat boots, looking super cute, beer in hand, and announced that Monakr would be staying on stage and playing along beside her! I thought that was really cool because they had been doing so well before her.

Turns out they’re on tour with her this spring, so it makes sense!

I’m going to be honest, I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to understand the lyrics as I was standing right next to the synthesizer amp, but she must be extremely articulate because I got the gist of most of her songs!

The first song that Dessa performed was “Skeleton Key”. I’ve attached the link below for you to listen to in case you weren’t able to be in attendance tonight.

I really like the use of piano throughout the song! I feel like in this day and age, the only person who consistently uses the instrument is Sara Bareilles. It was a refreshing sound, that’s for sure!

As the performance went on, I may have accidentally stopped paying attention to my duty as a journalist and started to participate like I was a concert-goer, dancing, etc., so I don’t remember all of the song titles, but there are two others that really stuck out to me.

One of my favorites that she performed was “Dixon’s Girl”. It’s got kind of an Amy Winehouse sound to it in the background. See what you think!

The other song that I really liked was “Fire Drills”. I think it’s because it has a Middle-Eastern sound to it with the strumming of an oud (I believe it is, at least), which is a type of round guitar! It also demonstrates Dessa’s rap skills.

She’s not just a singer, she’s a rapper, too, and a good one at that! Her lyrics actually make sense and flow together really well. Give it a listen, you will not regret it.

IMAGE VIA BELLA VOLFSON PHOTOGRAPHY

So, yeah, those were my top two favorite songs of the evening, but you can check out the record label that Dessa’s signed with, Doomtree, on YouTube here to listen to more of her stuff!

While at her concert, I tried to categorize her…who did she sound like? Who did she perform like? Who did she share any similarities with? I’m telling ya, it was hard.

She is completely original. Her physical appearance kind of reminds me of Lady Gaga, but a more-down-to-earth Lady Gaga, you know? As far as vocals goes, sometimes she had a Miley Cyrus sound, but it wasn’t consistent, so I have come to the professional conclusion that Dessa is an utterly unique artist, which is hard to claim.

She was just her and didn’t want to be anyone else, and I think that’s hard to find today. She raps, she sings, she covers all types of genres, and most importantly, she has a good time.

She did say that she wasn’t a fan of labels. She doesn’t want to be known for “rap” or for “pop”, she wants to be known for being Dessa.

I have major respect for that.

IMAGE VIA BELLA VOLFSON PHOTOGRAPHY

Dessa as a human being is so funny. In the photo above, you can see her drinking what looks like beer. The story behind that is absolutely perfect.

While performing, instead of reaching down to grab her own alcoholic beverage, she reached out and grabbed someone’s drink who was standing in the front row. She took a big gulp, smiled, and handed it back. Turns out, it was not beer as she had expected, but apple cider. How funny! I hate when that happens, so I feel you, girl!

Another great moment during the show was when she called a photographer out (not myself, sadly) and made him come up on stage to take a posed photo because she recently dyed her hair blonde and washed it for the first time today, and it “felt like bread”.

She needed him to take this one shot of her pretending to perform so she’d look good for whatever type of media he worked for. It was hysterical!

By the way, might I add, I love her hair. Super cute. Anyway, yeah, she did quirky stuff throughout the entire show like toss her hoop earrings to the ground behind her, gave advice to “hetero-men dating hetero-women” about rap music, and took someone’s phone in order to record herself. There’s a photo of that moment below!

IMAGE VIA BELLA VOLFSON PHOTOGRAPHY

At the end of her show, there was a predictable encore, of course. Just in general, I’m kind of over the encore aspect of things, because everyone knows it’s gonna happen!

Soooo…just stay on stage and do another song. It’s like a surprise party, but you know it’s happening. It’s still fun but the moment is kind of spoiled.

Overall, Dessa put on a super fun show. The atmosphere was intoxicating because she had a real fan base. I guess she’s been here before!

I definitely will not miss out on her again. She’s a talented artist and a pure person. She’s not fake and trying to please everyone, she’s just doing her, which I think is so admirable and important. If you want to check out her Instagram, give her a follow here!

IMAGE VIA BELLA VOLFSON PHOTOGRAPHY

Little side-note; all of the photos in this column were taken by yours truly. I had to decrease the quality in order to upload them, so if you want to see more, check out my photography Instagram here! I would really appreciate it. :-) This was the first show I’ve ever shot and I hope to do more in the future! Maybe my next review…? Stay tuned!

PS. I just wanted to say. The lead singer/keyboardist of Monakr is super hot and looks like Adam Levine. That is all.

Singer-songwriter S. Carey will be performing at The Mill at 10:30 PM on Friday, April 6th as a part of Mission Creek Festival 2018. S. Carey is one of the most highly anticipated performers at this years festival and is coming right off the release of his new studio album titled Hundred Acres.

Via On Milwaukee

S. Carey is the stage name of Sean Carey from Eau Claire, Wisconsin. He started his solo career in 2010 after touring and recording as a member of the band Bon Iver.

He was the drummer and backup vocalist for the band. Carey and Justin Vernon realized how great their harmonies sounded together and Carey was immediately brought on as a member of the hugely successful band.

Carey’s solo career has steadily been gaining momentum; he was featured in a Taylor Swift curated playlist of her favorite songs, has worked with other popular indie artists like Sufjan Stevens, and was even commissioned to write a song for the Netflix show Flaked.

My first experience with S. Carey came a few years ago, when I was in the midst of a Bon Iver obsession. I had always assumed that the band was Justin Vernon and a rotating supporting cast of musicians, until I watched one video: a live Bon Iver session at AIR studios, featuring only Vernon and Carey.

Bon Iver, Bon Iver is one of my favorite albums ever, and seeing the songs stripped down to their cores revealed the supreme talent of Carey to me. Melodies and harmonies isolated themselves, and the back and forth chemistry between Carey and Vernon revealed to me how important of a component Carey was to the sound the band cultivated. It’s one of the most beautiful live performances I’ve seen.

Via Scarey.org

Perhaps Carey’s most famous song is titled “Fire-scene- Alt. Version,” and features the soft, almost whisper-like voice of Carey backed by only the sounds of a piano. The song slowly gains momentum and the piano gets louder as Carey’s voice soars. The song is extremely beautiful, and a great introduction for those trying to get familiar with Carey’s style of music.

S. Carey’s newest album Hundred Acres is described by Paste Magazine as “well-written, breathtakingly pretty and as edgy as a cue ball.” The album is a return to simplicity for Carey, featuring folk-pop arrangements that engulf the listener in an ethereal trance of beautiful harmonies.

Via The Current

Carey’s music is sure to translate spectacularly to the intimate setting at The Mill, and will be a perfect backdrop to his soft folk-pop. It will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of Mission Creek Festival 2018.
