Iowa has had the best of luck with these kinds of stories. Just this year, the Kinnick Wave captured the hearts and minds of the nation, even winning the annual Disney Spirit Sports Award. But, if you had the chance to be at the Purdue-Iowa slaughter at Carver, the annual Chris Street reminded the Iowa faithful of why we love sports.

January 19^th, 2018 marks the 25^th anniversary of the passing of Hawkeye legend Chris Street. Street lived out his dream, even if it was marked short. The legend of Chris Street was never about his stats. Street’s passion was such a high intensity that the only thing you’d be able to do is be in awe. And smile. Chris did that a lot, another level of the legend. Not only did Street have an unparalleled passion for the game, but his lovable personality and magnetic smile was equally a force to be reckoned.

Iowa fell in love with Chris Street because Street was Iowa embodied. Street had the “Iowa Nice” personality commonly found in the Hawkeye State and held the tenacity of the court that is a by-product of his tough, blue collar work ethic. But, more than anything, Chris Street woke up everyday wanting to do nothing more than to play basketball for his Hawkeyes. The University of Iowa released a video and showed the same video during halftime of the Purdue-Iowa contest one day after the 25^th anniversary of his passing. The game prior to and following the Chris Street tribute did not have the match the intensity of the Iowa legend. Purdue put Iowa out of the game in the first ten minutes of the first half and merely poured on the point. Making the game seem like nothing more than a morning stroll, the Boilermakers sliced through the soft Iowa defense on its way to a Big10 record in most 3-pointers in a game. 20 shots fell out to 33 attempted from beyond the arc for the third nationally ranked Purdue squad. Iowa could and would not come close after taking an early 3-0 lead in an eventual 87-64 loss.

Purdue will be taking their talents back home to West Lafayette, Indiana in a matchup against Michigan on Thursday, January 25^th at 6 pm CST. The next game for the Iowa comes with another tribute to Chris Street. However, in this Tuesday contest against the hated Wisconsin Badgers, Iowa will be wearing the Gold jerseys. Iowa faces Wisconsin on January 23 in Carver-Hawkeye Arena at 6 pm CST.

Trouble With the Curve

I know this movie is relatively new, but it has already become one of my favorites. Clit Eastwood plays a main character and also a producer of the film. I consider myself an old school baseball fan, which is another reason this movie is so appealing to me. The movie, unlike say Moneyball (a movie which I love), Trouble with the Curve glorifies the old way of scouting baseball players. Gus Lobel (Eastwood) is able to outsmart modern scouts and their holy metric stats with good old fashioned scouting. Another reason I like this movie so much is Amy Adams portrayal of Gus Lobel’s daughter Mickey. Her knowledge of the game of baseball eclipses even John Flanagan (Timberlake) a former baseball player in the film. I would recommend this film to any old school baseball fan.

Miracle

I recently watched this movie for the first time, and I immediately fell in love with it. This is a story that stretches beyond sports. Some consider it more of a patriotic movie than a sports movie. At a troubling time in the US, the nation rallied around this hockey team full of amateurs. It’s a classic underdog story that America seems to love so much, especially when it comes to sports. I wasn’t alive during the actual game, but the way the movie is produced it feels as if they used actual game clips. Seeing some of the scenes matched up with the actual plays in the real game is quite fun to see. It’s hard not to feel that wonderful American pride flow through your body when you hear the audio actual clip of Al Michaels famous call at the end of the game, “Do you believe in miracles!? YES!?”

The Sandlot

        I mean how can you have a list of the greatest sports films and not have The Sandlot. I loved The Sandlot when I first saw it, and I still love it to this day. I honestly have never met anyone who said they didn’t like this movie. I could probably write an entire article on all the famous quotes that have come from that movie. This movie is about a bunch of kids growing up on baseball, something many can relate to. And on the off chance you haven’t seen the movie, I highly recommend it be your next film.

Field of Dreams

        The fact that I am a die-hard White Sox fan, currently live in the state of Iowa, and am a mere hour and a half away from where they filmed this movie, it would almost be a crime for me not to include this movie on this list. Putting all of that aside, this is still a great movie that any sports fan can thoroughly enjoy. The imagery used to describe baseball throughout is what made me fall in love with this movie. But there are other reasons that make this film memorable, and I highly recommend this movie to anyone who has yet to see it.

Space Jam

I know, I know, Space Jam is a weird one to put on this list, especially with great movies like Rudy, Remember the Titans, Hoosiers, Caddyshack, among many others failed to make the list. But again this list consists of my personal all-time favorite sports movies, and I remember how much I loved Space Jam. Michael Jordan to me is one of the greatest sports figures to walk this earth. I share a name with him albeit it’s my first and his last, but I still felt a sort of connection with him that way, not to mention the fact that he played for my team, the Chicago Bulls. So naturally I loved this movie as a kid. Even now I still enjoy the movie, I watched it this past winter break and still danced when the Space Jam song game on. I still watched in awe and disbelief as Michael Jordan dunked from half court to the tune of R. Kelly’s “I Believe I Can Fly.” While this may be more of a childhood movie, I still think this movie can be enjoyable for the older crowd; I mean who doesn’t like Bugs Bunny?

        Like I said in the last paragraph, I left many great movies off this list, many movies that I love; however, these five are the five that have constantly reminded me why I love sports so much.

It’s Linsane. It’s Lin-tastic. And Va-Lin-tines Day only cemented this whirlwind of absolute bewilderment.

What’s even more shocking is that it’s only been eight games.

Yet within those eight games, New York’s Jeremy Lin has done things no other NBA basketball player has ever done before. He’s set records and broken barriers. He’s captured the heart of one nation and encouraged the confidence of many more.

Before Sunday’s game against the Dallas Mavericks, Jeremy Lin has scored more than 20 points a game as a starter (with the exception of the Knicks’ win over Sacramento last Wednesday, where he had 10 points).  He has dished out at least seven assists per contest (except for his lone loss, 85-89 to the New Orleans Hornets on Friday in which he had 26 points), and in the process, has brought the New York Knicks back into relevance.

And even through all the painstaking grinding from the 23-year old, through all the stories that have surfaced of his past struggles and hurdles, and through the consistent yet masterful play on the court, day-in and day-out, people continue to doubt the validity of this amazing rise to stardom.

Shall we acknowledge the faith aspect of this story, also? Because if you ask Lin himself, he’ll claim that God has done every bit of this. Every basket, every perfect pass, the start of his run, the getting to Harvard, his high school days; everything, Lin says, has everything to do with the big man upstairs.

After last Tuesday night’s win 90-87 over Toronto, the Lin-man himself expressed his greatness and loyalty to God, saying that none of this would be remotely possible without his own faith and prayer.

He said,

“I would say it’s a miracle just because anytime something like this happens, a lot of stuff has to be put into place, and a lot of it is out of my control. If you look back at my story, it doesn’t matter where you look, but God’s fingerprints are all over the place, where there’s been a lot of things that had to happen that I just couldn’t control. And you could try to call it coincidence, but at the end of the day there’s twenty, thirty things—when you combine them all—that had to happen at the right time for me to be here. So that’s why I call it a miracle.”

This isn’t an act, boys and girls. This story is as real as you and me. It’s as real as the shower you took this morning. It’s as real as the device you’re reading these words on. It’s as real as his game-winning three-pointer flying through the basket with only a half a second left on the clock.

While the stories are eerily comparable, Jeremy Lin is not Tim Tebow. As devout as they both may be, let’s not forget that one’s on the court and the other is in the offseason. And while they both may win, you have to look past simple records to realize the magnitude of each one’s presence.

But let’s not even delve into a comparison, because we don’t need one. What we do need is a bit of heart. We need some solicitude for a man who’s doing things we haven’t seen since the 1970s.

I mean, after doing some reading on his story, and watching him play up close, it’s almost impossible not to cheer for Jeremy Lin. And I’m not the only one who thinks so.

“It’s great to see him break some barriers. As a fan of the game, I root for him,” said Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra.

“He has been phenomenal. It is a great story. It is a testament to perseverance and hard work. It is a good example to kids everywhere,” said Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant.

“He’s playing totally unselfish. He’s taking what the defense gives him. He’s studying, which is what you want from your point guard, a guy who wants to be that facilitator and get guys involved and get guys open shots,” said New York Knicks forward and teammate Amar’e Stoudemire

“Just everything,” said New York head coach Mike D’Antoni, when asked to name the best part about Lin’s story.

Jeremy Lin is the true story of rags to riches. He’s spent the last few weeks sleeping on his brothers’ couch in Manhattan even while dropping bombs for the city of New York.  He’s the real-life embodiment of the American Dream.

In fact, his story is borderline documented magic.

What’s not been magical about his jump to the top?

From being a part of a high school state championship team in Palo Alto, California, to being rejected by the likes of UCLA, Stanford, Boston College and a plethora of Ivy League schools, to earning his degree while going undrafted then bouncing between three different teams and finally to being the top dog that beats even sliced bread, Jeremy Lin is here. Jeremy Lin is a winner. And Jeremy Lin won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.

In no way is Mr. Lin Michael Jordan. In no way is he Magic Johnson. And in no way will Jeremy Lin ever become either of those Hall-of-Famers.

But with a story like this, including all the baskets, strides, and fans he’s made along the way, you can’t help but root for this guy to keep the flame lit.

Eventually, Jeremy Lin will lose a couple games in a row. And when the time comes, he won’t make the headlines he’s made in the last few days (i.e. Report: Lin moves from couch to apartment). He won’t cause nearly as much havoc. And he won’t be the center of attention.

That shouldn’t stop us from siding with the Asian-Sensation. Not one story is perfect. Not one story has gone from zero-to-hero without a few bumps in the road.

But we’ve all been waiting a lifetime to witness true history pulled out of a hat; true documentation of greatness that came out of nowhere – we’ve all waited to see true magic.

God has given it to us with Jeremy Lin. Let’s not waste our time rooting against what we’ve all been waiting for.

Although Tiger went through a dark time, he still has many memorable quotes such as the latter of these two. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to the community and kids. Tiger is a legend and he will always be remembered as such.

Remember The Titans came out in 2000, starring Denzel Washington in one of his more prominent, powerful roles. The film demonstrates how segregation in the deep south during the civil rights movement affected everyone. The movie uses sports to paint a vivid picture of how overcoming obstacles and adversity is how champions are made.
Any Given Sunday

The reason that this clip from this film is on here is simple. Every time the clip comes on, it makes me envision what it is like to be in the locker room with some of the greats. The speech is powerful and encompasses everything that most coaches try to establish in their speeches.

Prefontaine once held all 7 long-distance running records from 2,000-10,000 meters. He was killed in a car accident at the age of 24,, but his legacy was solidified by his memorable quotes and ability to use his guts to win races.
Bannister was the first man to ever break the 4 minute mile barrier, which he did in 1954. Bannister went on to have a very prestigious career in academia. He became a neurologist, and Master of Pembroke College in Oxford, where he retired from in 2001.
These quotes showcase two of the most important aspects in sports, one being the ability to go the extra mile and push beyond the threshold of comfort and the other showing how that can pay off, using a little humor.

#7. Bob Knight

Bob Knight was known for his brash tactics as a head coach at The University of Indiana from 1971 to 2000 when he was fired for refusing to step down after the University was forced to employ a “zero

Knight held the title for most wins ever by a collegiate head coach with 902 total wins, but that record was broken by Knight’s former player, Mike Krzyzewski in 2011.
