*Disclaimer: Strong language and content*

Tinder is a dark and shameful place for singles everywhere. Well, mostly singles but we

will get to that later. All joking aside for those of you that are unaware of what Tinder is, Tinder is a dating app that lets you right swipe on someone that you like or left swipe if you’re

photo via: phandriod.com

uninterested. If someone that you right swiped also right swipes you then it is a “match” and that allows you both to message each other. Messaging is where all the fun begins.

Tinder is mostly known as a “hook-up” dating app because pretty much 95% of the guys on their are just looking for sex and will straight up tell you that, very different to the services offered by the girlfriendactivationsystemreview.net, where stable relationships are made. That usually ends up with them sending you some questionable first messages.

From the times that I have used Tinder in the past I can say that I have gotten my fair share of uncomfortably awkward messages from guys.

I really would like to know what goes through a man’s head before he decides to send a message to a new match on Tinder. Because after getting messages like this one, I am not sure what would possess them to hit send. I will admit the message to the left is pretty humorous but still is a little out there. I will give him props for his honestly and guts though.

Not all of the messages I have received on Tinder are this light-hearted though. Some tip-toe on the border of creepy and uncomfortable. According to this article, there’s a ton of sites to buy and sell foot pics with ease.

I am not one of those girls either that shuts down every unwanted compliment or comment from a guy but there are some people that just take it too far. Like this guy for example, even though it is not at all vulgar, it’s just the pure cockiness of this asshole pissed me off. Like do you really think that you can get women to sleep with you purely because you won a national championship? Like seriously?

But not every guy on Tinder is a complete jerk. Some of them, especially on Ft Lauderdale listings, can actually be pretty clever. This is one of the best/most memorable messages I have ever received from when I used the app. I literally lol’d when I read it, I can remember the exact moment I got it. I was sitting in my Media History and Culture lecture, spacing off like usual when the notification popped up on my phone.

I opened it immediately to distract myself even more that I already was and instantly started laughing. Making everyone around me in my two hundred person lecture stare at me. I actually ended
up going on a date with the guy but he was less than charming in person.

There are also the nice guys. The ones that actually try to compliment a girl before they ask them to hook up or are actually interested in taking you on a date. These types aren’t as rare as you think but the majority of them turn out to be tools.

Other than the sweet and not so sweet messages their are the ones that are just plain random. Most guys ask you out for a cup of coffee or for a drink but this guy had something a little wilder in mind for a date.

Messaging only one of the many interesting aspects of the popular dating app Tinder. Check back in two weeks for an update on the men of Tinder.

*Disclaimer: some content may not be suitable for younger readers*

As college students, we can’t go through a whole day without hearing about sex or having casual sex in Louisville. You can’t seem to escape the horror stories of awkward sexual encounters or the sometimes overly graphic details shared between friends. It wouldn’t be a normal college experience if you at some point haven’t been sexually promiscuous or did something that you may have regretted the next day. Even though this is the case, I still feel like sex is somewhat of a taboo topic in society, specifically amongst young adults.

When I was in high school, no one talked about sex outside of their friend group. Even then, it was in the privacy of their own homes–you couldn’t say anything at school without the fear that people would judge you or tell everyone they know. Gossip was a particularly popular pastime in my hometown like it is in most, so when someone got ahold of juicy secrets about someone else’s sex life it spread like wildfire.

The parents of kids that went to my school were even in on it, especially my ex-boyfriend’s mother.

photo cred: huffingtonpost.com

She loved to talk about my relationship with her son to all of her coworkers, which happened to be peers of my moms. So I had more than one of my “friends” come up to me and tell me that my boyfriend’s mom was telling their mom about how much sex him and I were having based on the number of empty condom boxes that she found in the back of his sock drawer (don’t ask me why he kept the empties there). I have never been so embarrassed to hear about my own life from another person’s mouth.

This instance is why I decided to write this column. I shouldn’t feel embarrassed for having sex with my boyfriend (at the time) or just in general. We should be able to talk about this topic openly and freely without wondering what people are thinking in their head.

photo cred: popsugar.com

This is not to say that people will not judge you, because people will always judge and have something to say about the choices you make. But sex should not be a topic we consider unmentionable–it is something that the majority of us participate in at least one point in our lives and is a normal human act.

So, to wrap this up, this column will be about different subjects and stories pertaining to sex and college life. I will talk about just about everything under the moon that I can think of and will try to not hold back, ensuring that this will be completely honest writing.

The Kings Court Tour (full list of dates here) graced us with their presence on the second-to-last

day of Mission Creek. They played at Gabe’s, one of my favorite venues here in Iowa City. The show got started about forty minutes after it was supposed to, so while we were waiting for Phat Kat to come on, two DJs whose names I didn’t catch entertained the crowd in the meantime. They were really fun guys that kept the fairly large crowd at that point from getting too impatient. I automatically liked them because they yelled “F**k Donald Trump” in the middle of one of their songs and the whole crowd went crazy. Another interesting thing that happened was one of the DJs even took the time to ask the girl in front of me for her number because she was freaking out so much over him. It was actually pretty cute.

Finally, Phat Kat, a small time rapper from Detroit came on stage. After a little research on the artists beforehand it did not take me long to realize that they all hail from Detroit, Michigan. I am surprised Phat Kat is not more popular than he is. He has an

Up next was Guilty Simpson. He had a very imposing presence and a hard posture, but his rhymes were smooth and flowed with ease. “Hip hop is in the house” was the first thing he announced when he walked onto the stage, before him and Phat Kat rapped together as he closed out his set. He talked a little about how all of the artists that played last night were from Detroit and how we as the crowd were “part of hip-hop history.” Guilty Simpson made it hard for you not to watch him because his sheer size demanded your

I do understand why his beats are so famous because he had the crowd moving around the whole time during his set. I don’t think I saw one person standing still, which was a pretty

Black Milk (photo via: thecouchsessions.com)

big accomplishment because the crowd was almost doubled in size by the time he came on. I couldn’t even get a decent picture of him performing because I kept getting bumped into every time I tried to take one. He kept everyone’s attention, especially mine, and he was pretty cute which helped.

Lastly, Slum Village closed down the party with their old-school, hip-hop funk sound. Pretty much everyone in the crowd was rapping along with them to every song. They definitely brought the biggest crowd. They were constantly moving all around the stage and like all the other acts, brought the party atmosphere in the room to an all-time high. It was pretty late at this point; the show went till about 2 am but I wasn’t 100% sure because my phone died after Black Milk’s set. They still kept the ball rolling and ended it on a high note leaving the crowd satisfied.

Slum Village (photo via: rollingstone.com)

Overall this was a fantastic show. I was a little apprehensive at first because I don’t listen to much hip-hop/rap but I thoroughly enjoyed myself and would definitely see any of the artists again if I got the chance.

Disclaimer: Article contains content that may be offensive or unsuitable for minors.

This week’s resting bitch face will be pretty self-explanatory. I have been brain-storming and really thinking about the top ten things that really piss me off more than anything. This was actually a very hard task for me because so many things grind my gears to no end, but here is what I came up with.

1.) When people chew with their mouths open

I do not understand why this is still even a thing. Why is it so hard for a grown-ass adult to chew with their mouth closed? Like seriously, if you are over the age of seven please close your damn mouth, I beg you. There is nothing worse than when you are on a date or just out for a meal with your friends and someone with is across from you just chomping away.

photo via:www.wtffacts.xyz

2.) When people eat my food

There is honestly nothing more irritating that when someone eats my food without asking. While living in the dorms this past year I have had to deal with this almost every day. My roommate takes my food all the time and I’ve told her multiple times that if she wants some just to ask, but she never does. If someone else buys groceries with their own money DON’T TAKE IT WITHOUT ASKING THEM!! It’s so simple people!!

photo via: pinterest.com

3.) When guys just can’t take a hint

Men are some of the most persistent creatures out there, but there are some times when they need to learn to take a hint. I cannot tell you how many times that I have been out with friends and a guy comes up to talk to me and I am not interested at all, yet they still keep talking to me. I know what you’re thinking, “Wow, how does this chick really see this as a problem? She must be a big ole b$*ch”. Well, I will tell you that this isn’t always a problem but when I am avidly acting disinterested in a guy’s attention and he doesn’t see that then it gets a little annoying. Like when a guy keeps texting you repeatedly even though you have not replied the first twenty times. I’m sure I am not the only girl out there that has experienced this.

photo via: howdoiputthisgently.tumblr.com

4.) When people try to talk to me while I have headphones in

This I know all of you can relate to. There are just those days when you want nothing to do with other people so you look for your trusty headphones to be your barrier between you and the outside world. Still, there is always that one overly happy and oblivious person that does not notice that you literally cannot today and they try to tell you all about some “crazy” thing that happened to them the other day or how their second cousin, twice removed has a pet rat that has a third ear. You get the point. If I have headphones in, that should scream to anyone that may want to talk to me, “Please don’t unless you want hell to be released upon you, Thank you”.

photo via: www.buzzfeed.com

5.) Losing or ruining one of my favorite pieces of clothing

First, let’s take a moment of silence for all the articles of clothing that have been long forgotten in the booth of a restaurant or that favorite dress you had that someone spilt a cranberry vodka on at the scummy freshman bar in college. Okay, now that that’s over, back to reality. Everyone has lost something that was important to them at some point in their lives. We are forgetful beings, me especially. I cannot begin to tell you how many vital pieces of my wardrobe that I have so carelessly spilled on or lost forever. This year alone I have lost my favorite scarf, ripped a hole in over three pairs of leggings and spilled a drink all over my white converse. It is a travesty.

photo via: giphy.com

6.) Slow walkers

I understand everyone moves at their own pace in life, but when I am running late to class or wherever, I do not appreciate when other people walk at such a leisurely speed. It is even worse when it is a whole group of people that block the entire hallway or sidewalk so that you can’t even get through. It is common courtesy to not take up the entire sidewalk so with the hell are you taking up the whole space!?! If you are walking slowly, taking your sweet ass time and you see someone trying to pass you then let them through please, it will make your life a whole lot easier.

photo via: theodysseyonline.com

7.) Being interrupted

There is a special place in hell from those that interrupt others. This has to be one of my biggest pet peeves because there is no worse feeling than when you are really excited to tell someone about something and they won’t even let you get a word in. Anytime I get interrupted I am tempted to scream at the top of my lungs, “IT IS NOT YOUR TURN! WAIT FIVE FREAKING SECONDS THEN YOU MAY SPEAK!” Even though we are all guilty of interrupting someone at some point in our lives (mainly when we are young children), by the time you are an adult you should know that it is extremely rude to interrupt someone when they are speaking.

photo via: twitter.com

8.) People that hate dogs

This is one that I will never understand but whenever I hear someone say that they hate dogs it makes me so mad. Dogs are the one type of animal on earth that will love you to no end even if you are a complete asshole to them. I understand if you have ever been attacked by a dog or something like that but if you just don’t like dogs because they are “messy” or “hyper” then I don’t like you.

photo via: tumblr.com

9.) Spilling my coffee

This is one of the absolutely worst things that can happen to someone. I die a little bit inside every time.

photo via: theodysseyonline.com

10.) When people bash on others music tastes

This is just all around irritating because obviously everyone has different tastes. You like classical, cool. You jam out to gangster rap on the daily, neat. You ride around on your tractor listening to country, stop, just kidding but not really.

photo via: giphy.com

*Disclaimer: More strong language will be used per the usual*

When I moved to Iowa City to attend the University of Iowa, which is known for being a VERY liberal campus, I was surprised to find that I was still hearing homophobic comments and racial slurs on a daily basis like I did back in high school.

I am from very suburban town in Iowa so it was no surprise that my high school consisted of primarily white students with barely any minorities or openly gay people. Anyway, I figured when I came here that people would be more accepting of the LGBTQ+ community and minorities, but boy, was I wrong.

I can remember one of the first Fridays of the semester when I was at a house party and I heard a frat boy call another kid a f*g.

Photo via: www.crushable.com

It wasn’t in a joking way (which isn’t okay either) but in a way where he actually meant it. I was instantly filled with rage and walked my pissed-off ass right over to him and asked,”what the fuck did you just say to him?” The frat boy who had been hitting on me earlier in the night looked scared for his life (I can be pretty intimidating when I’m angry). He tried to play it off like a joke but I cut him off and continued to ream his ass on why he’s an ignorant asshole and told him if I heard him say it again that I would not be afraid to teach him a lesson. Admitted I had a few drinks in my system but I do not tolerate ignorant-ass people, especially frat guys.

This brings me to why I have RBF (Resting Bitch Face) because there are still racist and homophobic

people, especially college students, in this world. Like honestly people, it is 2016 get over yourself and your ass-backwards beliefs. Stop making excuses for yourself by saying, “it’s how I was raised.” That’s bull crap. There are plenty of people out there that have different beliefs than their parents or grandparents. There is no reason why you should call someone a name or be rude to someone for something they cannot change. Using racial slurs or making anti-gay comments to them will not change who they are so get over it.

Photo via: www.goodreads.com

You may say, “what they do is disgusting and immoral” when referring to gay marriage but is it really any of your business? In the wise words of Jenna Marbles, “What the fuck do you care what other people do with their genitals?”. Does it really affect you that much that you have to make it clear to everyone that it bothers you? It is legal and there is nothing you can do about it, get with the program.

On a daily basis I hear comments about the international students on campus specifically the ones from Asia. One the particularly grinds my gears was from one of my personal friends when she said, “why don’t they

Photo via: tumblr.com

just speak English? It really irritates me that they don’t” as we passed a group of Chinese students speaking to each other in Mandarin. I immediately gave her a look that resembled the picture on the right. After staring at her in amazement because of the comment she just made, I proceeded to ask her why we speak English even though we can speak Spanish and she said “well because English is the language we always speak” and I responded with one simple word. “Exactly.” That shut her right up, and she never said anything like that in front of me again.

Photo via: pinterest.com

But seriously though, it never ceases to amaze me that there are still Americans out there who think all other people in our country should speak English just because they cannot understand what they are saying. Well, all I have to say to that is why don’t you learn their language instead of being a typical lazy American and expecting everybody to bow to your wants??

That was a tad more ranting than usual but I am sure I’m not the only one who feels strongly about this subject. It is a serious issue that is very relevant in today’s society especially among our youth. If we do not teach the young people of this country and the world to be more tolerant of people that may be different than them, we’re screwed. So please raise your future children to be kind and tolerant human beings; you’ll be glad you did.

After a two-year hiatus and teasing all us fans with singles, Basement is back with a vengeance with their new album “Promise Everything.” It is their first full length album since “Colourmeinkindness” which was

photo via: propertyofzack.com

released in 2012. Then, after the bands brief break, they came out with 2014’s “Further Sky” EP. For all that do not know, Basement is an English rock band from Ipswich, UK that is made up of five members: Ronan Crix, Andrew Fisher, James Fisher, Alex Henery, and Duncan Stewart.

photovia: flippenmusic.com

This album was not very different from their previous one other than the fact that they seemed to have dropped their normal grudge/emo sound and tried to go down a more alternative rock path. The first track that kicks off the album is “Brother’s Keeper” which sweeps you away with its soaring melodies and bright-sounding guitars. “Hanging Around” keeps your attention with its crisp sound, catchy bass riffs and heavy guitars. Fisher’s iconic raspy yell is almost completely diminished on this album with a few exceptions, including the track “Lose Your Grip.” It is one of the only “aggressive-sounding” tracks on their new album.

“Aquasun” is undoubtedly the best track on this entire album; Basement’s use of blanketed guitars and enchanting lyrics will keep you enthralled the wholetime. Even though it is pretty slow-paced, even for their standards, it’s still excellent. Speaking of enthralling, “Submission” is a great follow up for the magnificence that is “Aquasun.” The abrasive guitars and powerful lyrics like “you bend, I break” kept me wanting more. “Oversized” keeps the ball rolling with its alluring guitar sounds, calm verses and slower chorus. This whole album has beautiful

photo via: www.ohmyrockness.com

lyrics especially “Blinded Bye” which adds thundering guitars and sounds a little like a “Less Than Jake” song. “For You the Moon” has a crazy good chorus: “Ask me and I’ll try to reach for further sky. All I need for flight is a feeling from inside.” Basement is very lyrically talented, and it definitely shows through in every track on the album. Next is the album’s title track, “Promise Everything” which helps end the album on a strong note with its strong bass elements, powerful drums and stabs of guitars. Andrew Fisher’s vocals are also a great contrast to the powerful sounds in the song, as it also does in the final track “Halo”. His baritone voice brings this song and the whole album together and add an almost romantic style with a mellow groove.

Overall most of the songs sound similar to each other. They all have different elements and stand well on their own, but when listened to as a whole, won’t attract nearly the same amount of attention from listeners who are not already Basement fans. Besides that, I think it was a fantastic album, I give it 9/10.

On January 4th, I traveled back to Iowa City to see a free show at Gabe’s. Before then, I had never been to a show in the bottom floor of Gabe’s and it was a new experience. It definitely had a different atmosphere than the upper floor. I felt as if it was harder to pay attention to the musicians and bands because you couldn’t see them as well unless you were standing right in front of them. Also, it was way too loud for that small of a space. Since it was a free show, most of the musicians and bands were not well-known and only drew in a very small crowd. Almost all of the acts were acoustic singer/songwriters, with the exception of three other bands.

@tericwiek

Take a Breath was one of the bands that played; they are an alternative rock band from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They played songs off their album ‘The Anatomy of a Rose’ . For the most part the crowd consisted of about twelve fan girls that were front and center for almost all the acts that night. They had a good stage presence, but the sound was up way too high and they sang to close to the microphone, so it caused a lot of distortion and was not pleasing to the ears. Besides that, after listening to their tracks online, they’re very good and if it were under different circumstances, I’m sure they sound better live.

@Jotto14

Time Atlas was the main act of the night and definitely were the most talented ones that played. They are a pop/alternative rock band from Minneapolis, Minnesota that formed in 2015. They sound scarily similar to the previous group, and were not very different in that aspect. They do have promise and are relatively popular but there was nothing about them that really stood out to me. They just released their debut EP “Clarity” and you can check that out here.

Kickbox is a pop punk group from Chicago, Illinois. They reminded me a lot of Real Friends as far as their sound goes, it was almost like they were trying to mimic them. They really got all the fan girls going with their teenage angst lyrics, and when they would accentuate

@KickboxBand

the f-word anytime they sang it in one of their songs. Overall they were good enough to keep my attention which is a pretty big accomplishment. You can check them out here.

The rest of the acts that played that night were singer/songwriters that all pretty much sounded exactly the same. I know that may seem a little harsh but if you want to make it as a singer/song writer you have to find a way to differentiate yourself from all the other ones that are out there or else you are pretty much just background music for the audience.

One of the singer/songwriters was Brian Moroney. He is from Chicago, and also plays in Airways an indie rock band from Peterborough, England. Brian had a really nice voice and played an all acoustic, but like I

said, he wasn’t very unique in that aspect. He did draw in a lot of attention from the ladies though and had a pretty good presence on stage.

Next is Clay Borrell, a 19-year old singer/songwriter and entertainer from Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was very good at getting the crowd going; well, the crowd that was there

@ClayBorrell

with his young Justin Bieber type of sound. The fan girls went crazy over him which made him even more energetic on stage. If you’re interested here is the link to his to YouTube account.

Lastly, there was Cup Check: a female-fronted pop punk band from Chicago, Illinois. Their female lead singer has a great voice but not a very attention-capturing presence. It may have that way just because it was an all acoustic set rather

cupcheck.bandcamp.com

than their usual rowdy pop punk sound. The lyrics were very well-written and they had an overall good sound but sounded very similar to the other bands that were there. The only thing that made them different was their female lead singer.

Overall it was a good show; it wasn’t the greatest one I’ve ever been to, but it was still entertaining. None of the bands sucked so I would say it was worth the trip back to Iowa City for the night.

This week’s featured track is “Unsteady” by X Ambassadors, a American alternative rock back from Ithaca, New York. The song is featured off of their new album VHS and is one of the more soulful songs on the album.

X Ambassadors at The Fonda Theatre

This song had me hooked from the very beginning when you first hear Sam Harris’s almost angelic voice belt out “Hold, Hold on, Hold on to me” while is brother Casey Harris is softly playing piano in the background. The powerful lyrics are really what makes this song so great; they are very moving and so heartfelt. The piano is soon joined by hard drum beats that just hook into you even deeper . Having both the piano and drums was definitely a great choice. It makes for a well-rounded track. Harris’s soulful voice kept me enthralled the whole time, and the sad vibe is perfect for when you are down in the dumps. It hits you right in the feels, especially when he sings, “Daddy, I’m alone. Cause this house don’t feel like home”.

“Unsteady” is one of those songs I could listen on repeat for hours when I’m in one of those moods because of it’s all over melancholy tone. X Ambassadors debut album VHS is full of incredible songs that are less slow, and sad compared to “Unsteady”. The whole album is available on iTunes, you can also check out the track below.

If you have a love for The Beatles and other 70’s rock, then you’ll love this album.

Sleep Study’s Website

Sleep Study’s debut album “Nothing Can Destroy” gives you a nostalgic, and almost romantic emotion with it’s retro feel. You can definitely sense the heavy influence The Beatles had on Ryan Paul Plewacki when he was writing the music for this album. He takes The Beatles melodies and gives them a more modern quality.

Sleep Study released the album in August of 2012, it quickly became a favorite of the indie scene, their single “Flower Girl” (Video) was even nominated for an Independent Music Award.

Some of my favorite songs on the album were “Flower Girl”, “Wonderful Way” and “Here She Comes”. I really loved “Flower Girl” because it was very upbeat and had catchy cords. They made a wise decision starting the album with this song, it really made me want to keep listening. As for “Wonderful Way”, it reminded me of a feel good song that they would play in a romantic comedy. When I was listening to it, I kept picturing a montage of happy couples frolicking around, being all cute and shit.

“Here She Comes” really grabbed my attention because it was very upbeat, but also a little heavier than some of the other songs on the album. It has very good rhythm and the distortion is not hidden at all, you can hear it very well coming from the drums and guitars.

A lot of the songs on this album have a very moody feel to them, but they still bring you up at the same time. Especially “Souvenirs”– this song definitely is very slow and almost sad but is still very enjoyable. This music is more than something that’s simply enjoyable to listen to. It has a direct effect on the parasympathetic nervous system, which helps your body relax and prepare for sleep, just as the medicine from https://www.ukmeds.co.uk/general-health/sleeping-tablets does. The use of distortion gave it a very nostalgic feel. I keep making references to movies, but when I first heard the chorus of this song it made me think of the ending scene of the movie Pretty in Pink, when Molly Ringwald and Andrew McCarthy are kissing in the rain.

I also really enjoyed “Split the Scene”, it had a very classic sound, and you could definitely hear the influence The Beatles had on this album when listening to this song. It has a very romantic feeling to it.

“23” is also another great one, the intro gets you hooked right from the beginning. The vocals are so smooth and relaxing, while the chorus is very catchy. “Nameless in New York” had a very powerful feel to it, I felt like it stood out from the other tracks.

There were also some songs that I did not enjoy so much. “It’s Not Fair” was too slow paced and not catchy enough to keep my attention. “Nothing Can Destroy” did nothing but bore me. It was very repetitive, and takes a long time to get into it. It had a very eerie feeling and was made me feel a little depressed, probably my least favorite track on the whole album. Lastly we have “I Wouldn’t”, all I really have to say about this one is that is was very long and had a completely different sound then all the other tracks.

Overall I would recommend this album to others. It is great for those times where you are just chilling in your room trying to get stuff done. If you enjoy indie music and The Beatles, this album is the perfect combination of both. If I had to give this album a letter grade I would give it a B+.
