The Wailing, a Korean film clocking in at over two and a half hours is not homework. I have been meaning to watch this film since its release last year and brief run at Film Scene downtown. Now that it has been staring me in the face on my Netflix que for a week, I knew the time had come.

I watched it twice in a row, back to back. Not because I wanted to write about it. It is just that engrossing. The Wailing, directed by Na Hong-jin, is most easily defined as a horror film. But like many successful films in the genre, it is great at bending and twisting itself to fit many different labels.

At its heart, The Wailing is a terrifying thriller following a small town policeman, Jong-goo. He investigates a series of mysterious crimes that all seem connected in the form of a strange illness that all of the perpetrators share. All of these incidents begin happening after an enigmatic Japanese man moves into the village, and become more personal once Jong-goo’s daughter appears to become infected with this dark malady.

Horror is hard to sustain for a long period of time however, and the movie is well served by an injection of other genre influences. The first forty-five minutes take on a very comedic tone, bolstered by Do-wan Kwak‘s performance as Jong-goo.

Jong-goo may be a policeman, but he is an everyman in the mold of Homer Simpson more than John McClane. He is constantly late to work, gets berated by his boss, and seems to be quite bad at his job. This performance serves to endear the audience to the character and makes the latter part of the film where his daughter is in danger all the more affecting.

As far as horror goes, The Wailing runs the gamut from body horror to zombie movie to demonic possession. It is amazing that with all of these aspects the film at no point seems overstuffed or jumpy. Many movies try to cross genres but with varying levels of success.

Where the film makes serious gains though, is in the second half revolving around the mysterious Japanese man in the village and a shaman that Jong-goo eventually hires to help cure his daughter. This large portion of the film appropriately dumps most comedic undertones and cuts viewers straight to the bone, in more ways than one.

There are gory scenes that wil strike more sensitive movie goers, while appeasing genre buffs. A constant conversation involving ghosts and whether or not certain characters are actually real also serves to keep the audience on their toes and guessing until, and past the end of the movie. After two viewings, I am still not 100% certain as to the exact sequence of events in the film.

Director Na Hong-jin did purposefully end the film with an air of ambiguity. While I do have a fairly definite structure in my head on what was happening, other viewers will have wildly different interpretations of what was actually going on from the middle of the film to the conclusion.

This uncertainty that the film is willing to plant in the viewer’s mind does not undercut the primary message or theme of the film. Indeed, the film is most powerful when viewed as a parable of faith. There are numerous religious overtones and references in the film, some more obvious than others. The conclusion, while somewhat logically perplexing, takes viewers to the edge of an emotional cliff and dangles them over the abyss.

This question of faith is incredibly powerful, and I am not a religious person in the least. The Wailing is an undeniable triumph of horror, tone, and theme. And now that I think about it, I may need to go watch it again.

Will Duncan is a meditation and yoga teacher who has studied the Gelugpa lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. He gave two presentations at Witching Hour 2016, one workshop called “The Art of Doing Nothing: A deep exploration of what meditation is and what it is not” and on lecture called “Lessons Learned from Three Years of Silence”. This review is on his lecture about when he stayed in silent

meditation for three years, three months, and three days in Arizona at a retreated modeled after traditional Tibetan Buddhist retreats.

There was a full audience at his lecture, which he began by saying he had “no idea” what exactly he would speak about during his hour and a half long lecture. It became clear immediately that his teaching style is easygoing and informal.

He described his three-year long retreat briefly, saying that he only uttered three words for the entire three years — two of them were “fuck”, which he explained was in response about his plumbing issues. He said that the only other word he used was “fire extinguisher,” which actually is two words, but that’s okay.

After sharing some funny anecdotes about spending three years in solitude and silence, he moved on to what he called the “deep” part of his lecture: the spiritual awakenings he had while meditating in retreat. He wrote the words bodhicitta and emptiness on a whiteboard and began asking the audience what they believed those words meant.

After many not quite correct answers from the audience, Will explained that this Sanskrit word essentially means “a spontaneous compassion for all humans.” However, because of the fundamental failures of English as a language, this phrase probably does not grasp the entire concept of the word.

Will began explaining how he had a realization of what he thinks bodhicitta means. What I found most interesting about this is that he continually used the language of capitalism to describe what it means to have compassion for others. He said that when you “pay” people kindness you later “receive dividends” of that action when you feel good about yourself for being kind. He then likened this good feeling you get from being kind to free espresso, saying that “all of the people in the street who need your help are just like free shots of espresso!” At one people he called meditation an investment towards having spiritual awakenings. A bit strange, but I was still on board.

Later, Will was explaining an idea from Buddhism and said “we in the East say…” and this was quite

striking to me, considering that he is a white man from America. I’m not sure that his studies at the Asian Classics Institute in Arizona or his three year meditation retreat in Arizona necessarily… make him from “the East.” But I haven’t meditated for three years in silence, so maybe that’s just something that I can’t understand yet.

Overall, the audience seemed to be very engaged by Will. Also, this event and a few others hosted at the ICPL were free to the public, which is great. Witching Hour had a great line-up this year, and it was awesome that people who couldn’t get tickets were able to participate as well.

As college students, we can’t go through a whole day without hearing about sex or having casual sex in Louisville. You can’t seem to escape the horror stories of awkward sexual encounters or the sometimes overly graphic details shared between friends. It wouldn’t be a normal college experience if you at some point haven’t been sexually promiscuous or did something that you may have regretted the next day. Even though this is the case, I still feel like sex is somewhat of a taboo topic in society, specifically amongst young adults.

When I was in high school, no one talked about sex outside of their friend group. Even then, it was in the privacy of their own homes–you couldn’t say anything at school without the fear that people would judge you or tell everyone they know. Gossip was a particularly popular pastime in my hometown like it is in most, so when someone got ahold of juicy secrets about someone else’s sex life it spread like wildfire.

The parents of kids that went to my school were even in on it, especially my ex-boyfriend’s mother.

She loved to talk about my relationship with her son to all of her coworkers, which happened to be peers of my moms. So I had more than one of my “friends” come up to me and tell me that my boyfriend’s mom was telling their mom about how much sex him and I were having based on the number of empty condom boxes that she found in the back of his sock drawer (don’t ask me why he kept the empties there). I have never been so embarrassed to hear about my own life from another person’s mouth.

This instance is why I decided to write this column. I shouldn’t feel embarrassed for having sex with my boyfriend (at the time) or just in general. We should be able to talk about this topic openly and freely without wondering what people are thinking in their head.

This is not to say that people will not judge you, because people will always judge and have something to say about the choices you make. But sex should not be a topic we consider unmentionable–it is something that the majority of us participate in at least one point in our lives and is a normal human act.

So, to wrap this up, this column will be about different subjects and stories pertaining to sex and college life. I will talk about just about everything under the moon that I can think of and will try to not hold back, ensuring that this will be completely honest writing.
