There is a reason ESPN’s College Gameday is making the trip to Ames this weekend and it’s not just for the boys coming from the west on Highway 30 (more direct than I-80).

Now in his fourth season at Iowa State, Matt Campbell has turned a historical Big 12 doormat into a conference title contender. He’s done so against the grain of what passes in the Big 12 conference, with defense and clock control.

If we’re being completely honest, Iowa and Iowa State are mirror images of each in some aspects. Controlling the clock with a punishing run game, frequently using play action passes, a dominant defense, and superb special teams play.

The Daily Iowan/Nick Rohlman

Unfortunately, the last one has been a thorn in the side of Iowa State lately, as junior kicker Connor Assalley struggled as a sophomore, but had a solid day against UNI in the season-opener. Iowa State also lost returning punter Corey Dunn for the season to a torn Achilles in camp.

But with those similarities, there are some drastic differences in schematics. Iowa State is a spread offense and frequently uses three or four receivers at a time. The Cyclones do run a 3-3-5 defense under Jon Heacock, a stark contrast to Iowa’s 4-3/4-2-5 base look.

But a deeper look into the Cyclones prove that they have equal amount of question marks as studs in their camp.

The General: Brock Purdy

The story of Brock Purdy is an interesting one. A three-star recruit out of high school in Arizona, Purdy was offered a scholarship to Alabama, as well as Boise State, Texas A&M and a smattering of other Power 5 programs. Purdy chose the Cyclones and came into his freshman season as the third-string quarterback.

With an injury to Kyle Kempt and inconsistent play from Zeb Noland, Purdy was thrown into the fire at Oklahoma State and played well enough to never relinquish his position.

Iowa State quarterback Brock Purdy celebrates his touchdown run during the first half of an NCAA college football game against Baylor, Saturday, Nov. 10, 2018, in Ames. (Photo: Matthew Putney/AP)

But concerns rose about Purdy following the Cyclones triple overtime win against in-state foe UNI. Purdy only averaged 6.8 yards per pass attempt in the game. He averaged 10.2 yards per attempt last season with Hakeem Butler in the mix.

While he does have a very talented safety valve in DeShaunte Jones, the rest of his receiving core is a question mark as well. The lack of continuity between Purdy and his receivers may be why the deep ball wasn’t as prevalent in their season opener.

Purdy was a good quarterback last season, but for him to take the step to the next level, he has to be able to make the skill players around him better.

A stingy defense

When you think of Big 12 football, defense is one of the last thing that comes to mind. That is until Matt Campbell brought along Jon Heacock as his defensive coordinator when he arrived in Ames in December of 2015.

In three seasons, Iowa State saw their total defense rank go from 87th in 2016 to 26th in 2017, and back up slightly to 37th last season. In a conference dominated by offense, the Cyclones have embolden themselves as the Bullies of the Big 12.

“They’re a unique defense,” Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz said at his weekly press conference. “There’s only a couple teams I can remember that did similar things to what they do, somewhere back in the ’09-’10 range.”

It all starts up front with Iowa State and what might be the best defensive line in the Big 12, with Ray Lima, JaQuan Bailey and Eyioma Uwazurike. The former two were All-Big 12 selections a season ago.

Oct 27, 2018; Ames, IA, USA; Texas Tech Red Raiders offensive lineman Jacob Hines (77) and Iowa State Cyclones defensive lineman Ray Lima (76) face off at Jack Trice Stadium. (Reese Strickland-USA TODAY Sports)

But the Cyclones biggest defensive strength is in the linebacking core, with veterans like Marcel Spears Jr., Mike Rose and O’Rien Vance. Iowa will need to slow those three down to have any shot at a run game on Saturday.

If it’s offense you’re looking for in this Cy-Hawk game, you probably won’t find it with two great defenses going at it.

A slew of running backs

Replacing an unbelievably skilled running back in David Montgomery is not an easy job, but Matt Campbell and crew are trying to do it.

This week mark’s the second game in a row where Iowa State has listed FIVE different running backs in their depth chart. Those backs include Sheldon Croney Jr., Johnnie Lang, Kene Nwangwu, Breece Hall and Jirehl Brock.

The only back who didn’t see action against UNI was Brock, who was listed as the last running back on the depth chart. But the two backs that impressed me the most were Sheldon Croney Jr., and true freshman Breece Hall.

Aug 31, 2019; Ames, IA, USA; Iowa State Cyclones running back Sheldon Croney Jr. (25) runs away from Northern Iowa Panthers linebacker Bryce Flater (22) at Jack Trice Stadium. The Cyclones won 29-26 in three overtimes. Mandatory Credit: Reese Strickland-USA TODAY Sports

Croney’s second half performance is a big reason why Iowa State was able to cling on to their 29-26, triple overtime win two Saturday’s ago, amassing all of his stats in the 4th quarter in overtime. This leads me to believe that Croney will be the Cyclones go-to guy on Saturday.

Breece Hall is another back to watch as well. I was told during camp that former Iowa State head coach and former Iowa assistant Dan McCarney was back for a camp session and was said to have stated that Breece Hall has a chance to be one of the best backs Iowa State has ever had.

Hall looked like a freshman in his first game against UNI, but did show some flashes that he has the ability and speed to make it at Iowa State.

A lot of people throughout the preseason christened Iowa State as one of the favorite’s in the Big 12 this season. In a year where the conference is down in terms of great teams, I don’t blame them.

However, the UNI game showed there are still some holes on the Iowa State team, including an offensive line that appeared to have very little improvement from last season.

Iowa State is a good football team, but this game against Iowa will likely be more telling going forward for the Cyclones than it is for Iowa.

Scoring Big on YouTube: How Buying Comment Likes Can Help You Win at American Football and Beyond

If you’re a fan of American football, you know that success on the field is all about scoring big. But did you know that the same principle applies to your YouTube channel? By buying comment likes, you can increase your engagement and score big on the world’s largest video sharing platform. And there is such a thing like the best buy YouTube comment likes service to use

So, what exactly are comment likes, and how can they help you win on YouTube? Comment likes are simply the number of likes that your comments receive on a particular video. The more likes your comments have, the more visible they become, and the more engagement they generate.

By buying comment likes, you can boost the perceived popularity of your videos and attract more organic views and engagement. This can lead to increased visibility on the platform and more opportunities to grow your channel and reach new audiences.

But how does this relate to American football? Well, just like football, YouTube is a competitive field where success requires a combination of skill and strategy. By using the right tools, like buying comment likes, you can gain an edge over your competitors and score big on the platform.

Of course, it’s important to note that buying comment likes should not be used as a substitute for creating quality content and building genuine engagement with your audience. It should be seen as a supplement to your existing strategies, helping to boost your visibility and attract new viewers to your channel.

In conclusion, American football and YouTube may seem like unrelated topics, but they both share the common theme of scoring big. By buying comment likes, you can increase your engagement and gain an edge over your competitors on the world’s largest video sharing platform. So, whether you’re a football fan or a YouTuber, remember that success requires a combination of skill, strategy, and the right tools to help you score big.

Cy-Hawk week is one of the few times throughout the year in which Iowan’s are at each others throats…well maybe not literally. However, the rivalry between the Hawkeyes and the Cyclones is at a fever-pitch with the newfound success Iowa State has had under Matt Campbell.

Never before have the stakes been higher as not only this years game a must watch for the country, it has caught the attention of the mothership, as ESPN College Gameday will be making their first ever appearance in Ames for football.

But what many may not know is this rivalry has been heated well before the Cyclones newfound success.

At one point, the Hawkeyes reeled off 15 consecutive wins in a row over the Iowa State, from 1983 to 1998. Since then, the series stands at 11 wins to 10 wins in favor of Iowa.

With a series that close, there is bound to be some magical moments, and the 5 best will be chronicled here.

5. 2008: The Andy Brodell game

Maybe the poorest game weather-wise the rivalry has seen, it was a monsoon in Kinnick Stadium between Iowa and Gene Chizik-led Iowa State. Iowa State had beaten Iowa 15-13 the season before in Ames, in one of the biggest upsets in the rivalry.

Iowa was clinging to a 10-3 lead midway through the 4th quarter as Iowa State was punting the ball back to Iowa. Iowa receiver and Ankeny-native Andy Brodell was the return man. The rest, as they say, is history.

The electrifying punt return helped lead Iowa to a 17-5 win over Iowa State to bring back the Cy-Hawk Trophy.

Other notable performances that day included star Iowa running back Shonn Greene picking up his 3rd consecutive 100-yard game, en route to his record-breaking season, rushing for 1,850 yards and 20 touchdowns in 2008.

The infamous quarterback battle of 2008 was also still ongoing, as Ricky Stanzi was pulled in the 3rd quarter for Jake Christensen after throwing his second INT of the day. Stanzi would end up winning the battle midway through the year.

4. 1977: “Beat Iowa” backfires

For 42 years, Iowa and Iowa State did not meet on the gridiron for a bevy of reasons, bad blood being the most prevalent. However, Iowa state legislature helped the two sides come together and rekindle the rivalry in 1977.

The game pitted the Earle Bruce-led Cyclones took on the Bob Commings-led Hawkeyes at a sold out Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City with a national TV audience on ABC tuning in. Many expected the Cyclones to win as at the time, they were a much better program than Iowa.

The day of the game, Earle Bruce surprised his players with a special title on the front of the jersey that read “Beat Iowa”. Iowa State struck first with a 72-yard punt return for a touchdown. Iowa would answer back with a 77-yard touchdown run by Dennis Mosley, but missed the PAT.

Iowa would tack on another touchdown courtesy of fullback Jon Lazar and would win the first game of the renewed series 12-10, giving us this legendary picture.

Register file photo From 1977 Cy-Hawk football game: Iowa’s Jim Molini, right, taunts Iowa State kicker Scott Kollman after Kollman missed a third-quarter field goal attempt. File photo/The Register

3. 2011: James White capitalizes Triple OT thriller

Paul Rhoades had been at Iowa State for two seasons and was at the start of his third for the #3 moment. He had led Iowa State to a bowl game and just short of a bowl-eligible mark in 2010, but had been embarrassed by Iowa in both Cy-Hawk games in his tenure.

That was bound to change.

Change came in the way of a quarterback named Steele Jantz, whose performance that day was equally as awesome as his name. Jantz completed 25-of-37 balls for 279 yards, four touchdowns and zero interceptions.

Iowa State forced overtime with the score at 24-all. Iowa struck first with a Marcus Coker touchdown to make the score 31-24, but the Cyclones answered with Steele Jantz to Darius Reynolds to knot it up once again.

Both teams traded touchdowns in the second overtime and in the third overtime, Iowa settled for a Mike Meyer field goal. What happened next was one of the most iconic plays in Cyclone football history.

Video Starts at 12:30

Students stormed the field in pandemonium as Iowa State took home a thrilling 44-41 OT victory.

2. 2002: Seneca Wallace puts on a show in Kinnick

It is a statement I stand by strongly, but no opposing quarterback has ever had a better performance in the history of Kinnick Stadium than Seneca Wallace in 2002.

Iowa State went into the locker room trailing 24-7 at the hands of Brad Banks and the Hawkeyes. If the game would’ve just been the 1st, 2nd and 4th quarters, Iowa would’ve won handily.

It’s the third quarter that haunts Iowa fans still.

Wallace’s third quarter was the stuff of legend, as he threw for 129 yards and a touchdown and rushed for a touchdown as well, but how he did it was even more impressive.

Highlights begin at 1:57

The most impressive throw comes at the 6:00 mark in the video, when Wallace rolls to his left, sets his feet and his shoulders, and throws a strike to Iowa State receiver Jack Whitver for a huge first down in the 4th quarter.

Iowa State would go on to win the game 36-31, giving them their 5th straight win in the series, their longest streak at anytime in the history of the Cy-Hawk Series.

Wallace would finish the game completing 23-of-37 passes for 361 yards, one touchdown and one interception and rushing for another score. That’s tops in my book for opposing QB performances at Kinnick.

1. 2006: Mike Klinkenborg plays for his father

Raised in rural northwest Iowa, Mike Klinkenborg had the same dream any football player in the state of Iowa had: playing for the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Klinkenborg got that opportunity after graduating from Central Lyon High School in Rock Rapids, Iowa. After redshirting in 2003 and playing sparsely in 2004 and 2005, Klinkenborg won the starting middle linebacker job in 2006.

It was a fast start for the former Central Lyon/George-Little Rock Lion, recording double digit tackles in back-to-back games. But it would become a more melancholy start.

Six days prior to the annual Cy-Hawk game, Klinkenborg’s father, Myron, died of a massive heart attack. Many within the program were unsure if Mike would play.

He did, and would play like a man with an other worldly force behind him. Klinkenborg recorded eight tackles, including a TFL helping the Hawkeyes avenge the prior year’s loss with a 27-17 win over Iowa State.

Klinkenborg was named the Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week for his performance, but what might be the most memorable, was his postgame interview with ESPN.
