The 2017 edition of the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Trophy Game did not disappoint whatsoever. The newest rendition of the rivalry game will go down as a classic battle between two hated rivals. While the game started off to a relatively normal 14-10 score at the halftime break, the pace quickly heated up in the second half.

A slow start did not deter either team from pouring on the points in the following half. Both offenses threw the other’s defense out of the game in the second half. This being despite the fact that Iowa came into the game with a nationally renown defense; only allowing Josh Allen and the Wyoming offense to only 3 points.

Prior to halftime, Stanley and the Iowa offense reestablished itself with a 91 yard, 10 play drive that ended with a Stanley to VandeBerg for a 17 yard touchdown. Matt VandeBerg missed majority of last season with a broken foot; this was his first touchdown catch following the injury.

With 7:21 remaining in the third quarter, Iowa took a commanding 21-10 lead with another 94 yard, 11 play drive. The drive was capped off with Wadley hurdling over the pile on the goal line for a 1 yard touchdown. However, Iowa State responded quickly, effectively, and immediately with 21 unanswered points, going up 31-21 with 11:46 remaining in regulation.

Jacob Park would throw for 347 yards and four touchdowns by the end of the game with Nathan Stanley throwing for 333 yards and five touchdown to battle. Following the 21-0 Cyclone run, the Hawkeyes would strike back and would eventually tie the game.

In the post-game interview, Iowa Head Coach Kirk Ferentz spoke on the fourth quarter rally, saying, “The one thing we did all day offensively — we responded. They took the lead there, they just hit us with everything there in the second half. Our guys responded a couple more times.” And respond the Hawks would. The Hawkeyes were challenged again as Iowa State would attempt put the game away with a 38-31 lead with 4:36 remaining.

The thriller continued as Iowa would march back 81 yards in 7 plays to tie the game. Stanley completed a short pass across the middle to Wadley to tie the game for overtime. “It was a dog fight,” said Wadley, “We knew we were going to get their best effort.”

A dog fight perfectly describes the classic Ames matchup which took place on September 9th. However, the match would end in overtime. The Iowa defense showed up to force an Iowa State field goal which set up Stanley and the Iowa offense to take home the Cy-Hawk trophy.

Akrum Wadley ended the game with a strong statline, with 118 rushing yards and a touchdown on 28 attempts. Wadley also caught 72 passing yards and another touchdown on 4 receptions. Stanley and Wadley both needed large outputs to match Park with future NFL wideout Allen Lazard and Junior Hakeem Butler.

Next week, Iowa State travels to play Akron at 11 am central time on CBS Sports. The Iowa Hawkeyes return to Kinnick Stadium to take on the North Texas Mean Green on September 16th at 2:30 central time on ESPN2.

It was a tale of two sides coming into the game as the Cowboys, and their preseason Maxwell Award candidate quarterback and maybe one of the best quarterbacks in the league, Josh Allen, was looking to air it out against the young and Desmond King-less secondary of the Hawkeyes. On the other side, Iowa’s quarterback, Nate Stanley, was making his first college start against a veteran Wyoming secondary. Allen came out in the first quarter hitting his targets as he went 8-10 passing with 47 passing yards, connecting with Austin Conway for half of those completions. Stanley on the other hand ended the first quarter going 0-4 and was intercepted by Rico Gafford with a little less than 11 minutes to go. The Cowboys could not capitalize in the first quarter as the score was 0-0 after a quarter of play.

Wyoming scored first early in the second quarter with a field goal to give themselves a 3-0 lead; however, that would be the last time they would put points on the board. On the next Iowa possession, they marched down the field (thanks in part to a 4th down conversion and Nate Stanley’s first completion for a 19-yard gain) and took the lead with Stanley’s first career touchdown pass to Noah Fant on a 4th and goal. The Hawkeyes quickly stopped the Cowboys to get the ball back only to give it right back when Nate Stanley was sacked and fumbled the ball away to the defense with under a minute to go in the half.

The Hawkeye defense would not let the Cowboys score. Josh Allen was called for grounding which pushed them out of field goal position and then on a 4th down, Tim Zaleski muffed the punt which would set Iowa up on the 32-line of Wyoming. The next play, after an offsides penalty, Stanley found Fant again for his second touchdown pass of the game to make it 14-3 Hawkeyes going into halftime.

Wyoming came out in the second half on fire. The Cowboys were driving down the field but had a potential touchdown pass broken up at the last second by Joshua Jackson which ended the drive and stopped their momentum.

Halfway through the quarter, Nate Stanley gots his third touchdown of the day when a 45-yard completion is taken in for the score by Nick Easley to make the score 21-3. With all the momentum going their way, the Iowa defense forces Wyoming into a three-and-out.

The Hawkeyes turned it over again when Stanley fumbled after a big hit, setting the Cowboys up with good field positioning. The Cowboys still could not put anything on the board as they had a touchdown call reversed and missed a field goal that drive.

Wyoming would get the ball back only to have breakout corner, Josh Jackson, pick off a Josh Allen pass and run it back 41 yards to give the Iowa offense the ball back with good field position. Iowa then kicked a field goal on the ensuing possession to give us the final score of 24-3.

Running back, Akrum Wadley ran for over 100 yards for the game, something that Hawkeye fans are used to seeing as Wadley rushed for over 1000 yards last year. Speaking of the Iowa rushing game, they added another 1000-yard rusher in James Butler which makes Iowa the only team in FBS with two 1000-yard rushers in the backfield.

“We both feel strong about this year,” Wadley said of he and Butler sharing the backfield.” If we keep putting in the hard work and we keep grinding and running behind this line, we’ll be good, we’ll be fine.”

Hawkeye fans will have something to look forward to from one, if not both of these backs.

It is not often a team that has four turnovers wins a game by three possessions but Iowa somehow found a way to shut down Josh Allen and in the process, gave Nate Stanley momentum heading into the highly anticipated rivalry game next week against Iowa State at Ames.

The Hawkeyes still have some work to do on both sides of the ball and hopefully they will figure it out in time so they can bring the Cy-Hawk trophy back to Iowa City.

Get the run game going early: With the loss of star WR Matt VandeBerg, it’s no surprise that the Hawkeyes go to plan will be running the football. The Hawkeyes will need set the tone early with the run game to help open up the passing game and to keep their defensive fresh.

Take what the defense gives you: Even when there’s nothing there, we’ve seen CJ Beathard try to make a big play happen. With the lack of explosive playmakers, Iowa will need to take any yardage they can get to move the chains. The offense will have to sustain lengthy drives to keep the dynamic Penn State offense off the field.

Force Penn State RB, Saquon Barkely inside: Barkley has 888 yards and 10 touchdowns on the season while averaging 6.0 yards a carry. He is an athletic back who does most of his damage on the outside. Iowa will try to force Barkely back inside where their big body defenders dominate.

Get creative: Iowa has one of the most predictable offensive schemes in college football and they have lacked explosiveness throughout the season. For the first time in 2016, the Hawkeyes will have both LeShun Daniels and Akrum Wadley on the field at the same time. Wadley will line up in the slot in an attempt to give the offense some spark. Simply lining him up in the slot won’t be enough. Offensive coordinator Greg Davis will have to get creative with his offense and play aggressively if he wants to keep up with the Nittany Lions.

Focus on the game… not the environment: The Hawkeyes don’t have any players who have played in front of nearly 107,000 crowd at Beaver Stadium. The hostile and deafening environment helped the Nittany Lions upset the Ohio State Buckeyes just two weeks ago and you can bet that this crowd will bring the same type of energy.

Survive and advance: For those who are hopeful for an Iowa return to Indianapolis, they know this is a must win game. Iowa can’t afford another loss if they realistically want a shot at returning to the Big Ten Championship. The Hawkeyes are currently on a 9-game road-winning streak and will have the opportunity to extend that streak to double digits.

Iowans second drive of the game, Beathard executed a play-action to perfection  finding George Kittle streaking behind the defenders towards the end zone for a 21 yard score, but Marshall Koehn missed the PAT.

The fighting Illini answer right back with a TD on the ensuing drive by Keshaun Vaughn to put them up 7-6.

About the next 15 minutes remained scoreless until Beathard found Jordan Canzeri on a screen pass to the left and with a row a blockers, he took it up the sideline for the 17 yard score. Putting the Hawks back on top 13-7.

Iowa added a late Field Goal to lead at half 16-7.

The Fighting Illini scored the first 6 points of the 2nd half on a pair of Field-Goals of 37 and 40 yards by Taylor Zalewski to pull within 3 at 16-13.

Momentum was swinging a bit in Illini favor as Iowa offense hadn’t been able to move much offensively after putting up 298 yards in the first half. The first play from the line of scrimmage for Iowa after Illinois 2nd Field-Goal, C.J. Beathard audibled into a HB counter for Canzeri with a pulling Right Guard. Canzeri found a nice cutback lane and found a couple extra gears going untouched on his way to the 75 yard Touchdown. To increase Iowa’s lead 23-13 Ferentz said ” CJ has his head in the game, doing well physically but really doing a good job mentality too.  He gives us another option with great communication with the staff.”

Another player that stepped up today was true Freshman Jerminic Smith who caught his first pass as a Hawkeye and really seemed to be on the same page with Beathard, easily breaking free from defenders. He also  made a couple nice blocks on runs by Canzeri, which Ferentz pointed out in his post game report.

The Fighting Illini ran multiple tricks plays with a couple flea flickers which had been marginally successful. It was a 3rd and 1 for them at Iowa’s 40 to start the fourth quarter, they took a chance and tried a reverse pass with their best player Wide Receiver  Geronimo Allison and the Hawks defense wasn’t fooled, Allison throwing it right to Greg Maybin who easily intercepted it.

Illinois did add a touchdown on their next possession to cut the deficit 23-20 but that’s as close as it would get as Iowa added two more Field-Goals by Koehn to seal the game 29-20.

Enough can’t be said about Iowa’s 4th quarter defense after last week in Wisconsin and then this week forcing 3 turnovers( 1 on downs) in 4 possessions.

Injury Report

The victory was somewhat dampened by the news that broke about Senior DT Drew Ott tearing his ACL in his right knee on a punt rush, but Ott will continue to be a leader on the sidelines like he did after coming out on crutches.

HB Leshun Daniels is still “treading water” but is starting to climb the latter to his return, same thing with  OL Brandon Myers

OL Jordan Walsh hurt his shoulder in the first half but returned in the 2nd half.

Tevaun Smith didn’t play today, doubt he’ll be back before the bye week Oct. 24th.

Johnson-Koulianos is one of Iowa’s all-time best wide receivers. He’s first all-time in receptions (173), second in yards (2, 616), fourth in touchdown receptions (17), and fifth in all-purpose yards (4, 321). Johnson-Koulianos also garnered first team all-Big Ten honors in 2010 and second team all-Big ten honors in 2009. He led the Hawkeyes in total receiving for three straight seasons, 2007-09.

Cozzi has been a part of KRUI’s staff in some capacity since August 2010. He worked as both an assistant editor and reporter for The Daily Iowan from January 2010-May 2012, including covering the Iowa football team in 2011. The NFL season ends February 5th, as the New England Patriots take on the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLVI.

Stunning, surprising events have unfolded in the playoffs, like the Packers (15-1 in regular season) losing to the eventual NFC Champion New York Giants in the NFC Divisional round. One would think that Green Bay fans were more stunned and saddened than anything else, but who is actually surprised that the Giants–unfazed on the road over the years under head coach Tom Coughlin–made it to the Super Bowl yet again with a modest regular season record?

Over the past few years, the teams that punch their ticket to the playoffs in the final frantic games of the regular season have proven to be most dangerous.  Teams like Pittsburgh (2006 playoffs), Green Bay (last year), and the Giants have twice now arrived at the Super Bowl after winning multiple games–if not all their games–on the road.

Only one team will be content going into the 2012 season.  For everyone else, this time of the year is about contract extensions, trades, making Pro Bowl appearances, injury rehabilitation, and maybe taking a day cruise on Lake Minnetonka with some friends from Stiletto’s.

With the University of Iowa football team having 34 former players in the NFL (according to espn.com), we at KRUI Sports want to honor the Hawks who had some of the finer statistical performances of the year among their black and gold club members.

With apologies to those who’s impacts were more subtly felt on their respective team (Tyler Sash, small Giant projectile), here are some former Iowa Hawkeyes who produced the numbers (in alphabetical order):

Pat Angerer, Linebacker, Indianapolis: Angerer finished with 148 tackles, 1 forced fumble, and an interception for the 2-14 Colts.  Angerer’s numbers will surely keep him in the league, especially for teams who’s main priority is stopping the run.  Angerer was all over the field for the Colts in 2011–their record certainly not indicative of Angerer’s effort and contribution to the team.

Scott Chandler, Tight End, Buffalo: Before the 2011 season, journeyman tight end Scott Chandler had 1 catch for 8 yards before impacting the Bills in the highest.  Bills’ head coach Chan Gailey discovered that Chandler’s height (6’7”) was most useful around the goal line and in short-yardage passing situations.  Chandler could be considered a former Hawkeye/NFL Comeback Player of the Year after snaring 38 passes for 389 yards and 6 touchdowns.  As a Hawkeye, Chandler was arguably nothing special compared to former tight ends like Dallas Clark, Tony Moeaki, and Brandon Myers, who played under Kirk Ferentz.  It seems he has found his groove as a Bill, and now at least has some stats to sell to another team should he be traded.

Adrian Clayborn, Defensive End, Tampa Bay: Disappointed as Hawkeye fans were with Adrian Clayborn’s performance in 2010 (his senior year: sacks dropped from 11.5 in ’09 to 3.5 in 2010), it would be hard to convince Tampa Bay’s incoming coach Greg Schiano that Clayborn is not worth keeping around.  As a rookie, Clayborn tallied 42 tackles, forced 3 fumbles, and produced 7.5 sacks for the underachieving Bucks.  Schiano will expect more sacks from Clayborn, but overall it was an ingratiating rookie season for the defensive end.

Shonn Greene, Running Back, New York Jets: By his third season in the NFL–all with the New York Jets–Shonn Greene has finally had the type of season that most Hawkeye fans expect him to.  Greene set career highs for rushes (253),  yards (1,054), and touchdowns (6).  Though perhaps meager numbers for a starting NFL rusher, the former Doak Walker award winner is just beginning his career in the league and could have used more help from a Jets offensive line that fizzled–a reflection of his team that finished 8-8.  Fajitas sizzle, Alka-Seltzers fizzle.  Jets’ head coach Rex Ryan knows as much.

Chad Greenway, Linebacker, Minnesota: The Vikings’ upper management can look at Chad Greenway as one of the safest first-round draft picks in the past decade for the organization.  Yet again, Mr. Greenway led the team in tackles with 154 in 2011.  Since coming back from a torn knee ligament at the beginning of his rookie season in 2006, Greenway has been piling up more tackles than anyone else on the team.  And although he did not chip in any forced fumbles or interceptions, his nearly ten tackles per game were good enough to get him a Pro Bowl invitation as a substitute.

Karl Klug, Defensive Tackle, Tennessee: So many factors work against Klug in the NFL.  He plays one of the most exertive positions in the NFL (defensive tackle, or any position on either line for that matter), he’s undersized for such a position, weighing in at 275 pounds.  He is probably heavier than that, but is no where near the weight of flesh plugs B.J. Raji or Vince Wilfork.  Add in the fact that he was a rookie in 2011, and most would accept a “learning” year from Klug.  Not so, as Karl amassed 7 sacks and 2 forced fumbles on 20 tackles for the Titans as a reserve tackle.  What’s notable is that Klug played as a substitute and notched 7 sacks, which is high even for a starting defensive tackle.

Amari Spievey, Safety, Detroit: No observant football fan would confuse the 2011 Detroit Lions defense to, say, the 2011 defense of the Baltimore Ravens.  That being said, Spievey turned in a solid second year in the league.  He set career highs in tackles (70, which is on the high end for a defensive back) and interceptions (3).  If the Lions don’t want to lean on Spievey to contain big plays down field, they should work on getting their linebackers and defensive lineman more tackles–which would naturally make them a better defense.

Casey Wiegmann, Center, Kansas City: Wiegmann did not make the Pro Bowl for this past season’s work, not even close, and Kansas City stumbled to a 7-9 record.  Why is Wiegmann here?  Because he’s the last Hawkeye in the NFL who played all of his college years for only Hayden Fry.  Wiegmann finished 2011 as his 16th year in the league, and has some ridiculous records for consecutive snaps played.  He could have played with Nile Kinnick on the 1939 Iron Man team, he’s that tough and durable.  Wiegmann will likely retire this offseason, but don’t be surprised if he gives it one more year.

Marshal Yanda, Guard, Baltimore: Yanda is a hot commodity for the Ravens.  Before the season started, he signed a nice contract extension.  He thanked the Ravens for the deal with a season of results that earned him a starting Pro Bowl invitation.  He’s the only Hawkeye in the NFL who made the Pro Bowl as a starter.

Elsewhere in the world, former Hawkeye cornerback Jovon Johnson won the Canadian Football League’s Defensive Player of the Year.  The Winnipeg Blue Bomber trapped 8 interceptions (returned 2 for touchdowns) to go along with 53 tackles.  Johnson is the first defensive back to ever take the defensive POY honor.  His team lost to the B.C. Lions in the Grey Cup this past November.

Former Hawkeye quarterback Drew Tate signed a contract extension with the CFL’s Calgary Stampeders.  Tate took over the starting job for the last three regular season games, winning all of them, before losing in the first round of the CFL playoffs.

The month of December is coming to a close for the Iowa football team and its fans.  Like last year, so much has happened off the field—enough to make one’s head spin with uncertainty and frustration.  Will the loyal members of Hawkeye Nation remember the month and chew it like a bitter root until the 2012 season finally comes or suppress it like a miserable holiday family get together, where Uncle Zeke falls into the Christmas tree after too much “hot cocoa” and Aunt Edna decides to confront the extended family on her deep-seeded concern of everyone’s “unfettered sinning?”

Fans, players, and coaches likely thought that December of last year was about the worst it could get for player-personnel upheaval.  Everyone looked into the rearview mirror and exhaled as the Hawkeyes stunned 12^th-ranked Missouri with Marcus Coker’s power running and Micah Hyde’s sly interception-for-touchdown.  But before the team could cap 2010 with a sweet victory, leading rusher Adam Robinson was excused from the team after being pulled over with a friend in a criminally-smoky vehicle.  Before that, (then) all-time receiver Derrell Johnson-Koulianos was arrested at his home for having a variety of illegal drugs and forever solidifying his image as a talented party-boy of a receiver. Such incidents can have serious consequences, and individuals facing criminal charges may need the help of an experienced criminal defense attorney such as Canyon State Law.

Surely nothing could top the tumult of 2010 as the Hawkeyes headed back to the Insight, this time to face another offensive machine in #14 Oklahoma.  Long-time sage defensive coordinator Norm Parker announced his retirement, but that was somewhat unsurprising.  If it wasn’t at the end of this year, most of us expected it soon.  Perhaps mobility and energy had caught up to the man and his ability to translate his philosophies into his players’ production.  He had nothing left to prove as a coach, anyway, so the timing seemed appropriate.

In the last few weeks, however, things have gotten weird.  A little over two weeks ago, Iowa’s coaching staff announced that running back Marcus Coker (1,384 yards, 15 touchdowns) had been suspended for the Insight Bowl for violating the University’s Student-Athlete Code of Conduct.  Shocking, considering his quiet humility and love for astronomy and its academic responsibilities.  Whatever his infraction, most now wonder how Iowa will move the ball on the ground against an already overbearing Oklahoma team.  If Coker’s 281 carries for the year were a slice of bread, the rest of Iowa’s rushes would be the crumbs on the plate: backup De’Andre Johnson comes into the Insight bowl with 18 light carries for 79 yards against some of the schedule’s weakest teams.  Promising runner Mika’il McCall has 11 carries for 65 yards.  From what he flashed in the season opener, perhaps he could step into the starting role the same way Coker did for Adam Robinson the in 2010 Insight?

But scratch that option, and scratch McCall’s name from the 2012 Media Guide: He is likely gone from the program after being suspended for a “violation of team rules” for the Nebraska game and then declaring his exit through Facebook earlier this week.  His post about bolting was quickly taken down, but he is likely an afterthought for the future of this program.  He has been mum with reporters who have contacted him at home (like the Des Moines Register’s Randy Peterson), and it’s clear that he’s upset with the suspension and his status on the team.

A bittersweet retirement for a legendary defensive coordinator and the ensuing uncertainty of who will coach the defense for the bowl game, check; the suspension of Iowa’s seemingly upstanding, durable starting ball carrier (and second-leading rusher in the Big Ten behind Heisman finalist Montee Ball of Wisconsin), check; the disgruntlement and apparent departure of promising running back Mika’il McCall, check.  What could possibly be next?  Oh yes, the resignation of Iowa’s defensive line coach Rick Kaczenski.  The coach of the line since 2007 resigned to take the same position at Nebraska, a seemingly lateral move if not for a bit more money at the end of the year.  Kaczenski iced the cake when he basically said—during an interview with Jeff Culhane of the Husker Sports Network—that Nebraska is his first real gig.  Said Kaczenski, “It obviously helps when you walk into those high schools and you have the ‘N’ on your chest. I’m looking forward to that. That’ll be the first time in my career you’re walking into high schools with a name-brand on your chest. I’m very excited about that.”

Oklahoma, meanwhile, is in no great shape itself—especially on offense.  Despite the betting lines in Vegas being anywhere from ten points to two touchdowns, the Sooners are missing up to ten offensive contributors with injury, including pass-eating receiver Ryan Broyles and leading rusher Dominic Whaley.  The team should still be able to move the ball because of their outstanding depth and the fact that Oklahoma is the fastest no-huddle spread offense in the country.  Also considering Iowa’s defense does no single thing particularly well, unsurprising it will be if Oklahoma finishes with 400-500 total yards and a few points.

With Coker and McCall gone, a sieve of a defense without a mainstay coach for the line (LeVar Woods is coaching the line on a temporary basis), and an overmatched Iowa team on paper, it would be easy to pick against the Hawkeyes.  For some reason, however, I can’t give up on Iowa.  The team always seems to prepare well for bowl foes, looking faster and more energetic in postseason games.  Throw in some criticism and doubt of the team, and they really seem to dig in.

I expect to see the vacancy of Marcus Coker show itself through quarterback James Vandenberg and a likely pass, pass, run plan.  Vandenberg will pass to set up a Jordan Canzeri or De’Andre Johnson run, followed by more short to mid-range passes.  If Canzeri and Johnson can get 3-5 yards a run, the Hawkeyes will have a chance.  They must run the ball to keep the clock moving and, most importantly, to keep the Sooner offense off the field.  Marvin McNutt certainly wants to play better than he did in the Nebraska game (29 yards receiving, lowest of the season).  Vandenberg will try to lean on McNutt like he has all season, and one has to hope that a few more players will help move the ball, whether it be Keenan Davis, Brad Herman, or C.J.
