An escape. They’re dramas. Plays. An act on the gridiron. A dance on the hardwood. Sports are so popular in today due to the world needing an outlet. A place to diverge our attention from the everyday life. Baseball, the national pastime. Football, the modern-day gladiators. Athletics are so popular due to their ability to create storylines. Magic vs Bird. Steelers and Cowboys. Yankees and Red Sox. Rivalries drive sports. But, even more so than rivalries, fans fall in love when the sports meet the outside world.

Iowa has had the best of luck with these kinds of stories. Just this year, the Kinnick Wave captured the hearts and minds of the nation, even winning the annual Disney Spirit Sports Award. But, if you had the chance to be at the Purdue-Iowa slaughter at Carver, the annual Chris Street reminded the Iowa faithful of why we love sports.

Chris Street storms down court following routine highlight play for the Legend (credit: Neal Rozendaal)

January 19th, 2018 marks the 25th anniversary of the passing of Hawkeye legend Chris Street. Street lived out his dream, even if it was marked short. The legend of Chris Street was never about his stats. Street’s passion was such a high intensity that the only thing you’d be able to do is be in awe. And smile. Chris did that a lot, another level of the legend. Not only did Street have an unparalleled passion for the game, but his lovable personality and magnetic smile was equally a force to be reckoned.

Iowa fell in love with Chris Street because Street was Iowa embodied. Street had the “Iowa Nice” personality commonly found in the Hawkeye State and held the tenacity of the court that is a by-product of his tough, blue collar work ethic. But, more than anything, Chris Street woke up everyday wanting to do nothing more than to play basketball for his Hawkeyes. The University of Iowa released a video and showed the same video during halftime of the Purdue-Iowa contest one day after the 25th anniversary of his passing. The following link goes to the inspirational tribute: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48dGMn_muYk.

The game prior to and following the Chris Street tribute did not have the match the intensity of the Iowa legend. Purdue put Iowa out of the game in the first ten minutes of the first half and merely poured on the point. Making the game seem like nothing more than a morning stroll, the Boilermakers sliced through the soft Iowa defense on its way to a Big10 record in most 3-pointers in a game. 20 shots fell out to 33 attempted from beyond the arc for the third nationally ranked Purdue squad. Iowa could and would not come close after taking an early 3-0 lead in an eventual 87-64 loss.

Purdue will be taking their talents back home to West Lafayette, Indiana in a matchup against Michigan on Thursday, January 25th at 6 pm CST. The next game for the Iowa comes with another tribute to Chris Street. However, in this Tuesday contest against the hated Wisconsin Badgers, Iowa will be wearing the Gold jerseys. Iowa faces Wisconsin on January 23 in Carver-Hawkeye Arena at 6 pm CST.

Of course it sucks. Wikipedia.org

My assignment of watching a movie each day this year has taken a serious blow. Professional football season has begun. I enjoy just about every major sport including college football, but when the NFL season starts, it seems that all I have time to do is either watch football, analyze football teams, or watch talking heads overanalyze football teams. Still, this movie thing has got to get done.

I could have just watched a bunch of football movies, but any of the ones worth watching are about high school or college ball. God knows I am not wasting my time writing about Draft Day. So instead I decided to look at my list of movies and see which ones resemble which teams in today’s NFL landscape. I am a bit of an asshole when it comes to football, so if I go hard on your team, sorry. Just keep in mind I’m a Detroit Lions fan.

Giphy.com

The Dallas Cowboys are the entire modern DC Comics film franchise. America’s Team. Not a great nickname considering most people you know probably find the Cowboys and their fans to be insufferable. Year after year, the Cowboys come out of training camp as one of the most hyped teams in the league. Even when their quarterback breaks his back in the preseason and they have quite literally no defense, they are still supposed to win it all.

Just like Man of Steel, Batman Vs. Superman, and now Suicide Squad, it seems impossible for the Cowboys to live up to the hype. These movies (and the Boys) always come primed and ready to become financial successes, but no one really made sure to bother that they would be good or even entertaining. Yes, I am very excited for 2017’s Wonder Woman, and yes I still think the Cowboys will suck next year.

Moviefone.com

The Baltimore Ravens are director Ridley Scott. Both have celebrated and storied pasts. Both won their respective industries’ highest honor in early 2001 when the Ravens won the Super Bowl and Scott’s Gladiator won the Oscar for best picture. Most important of all, no one has any idea what to expect of their next effort. Scott’s last movie, The Martian, won awards, made tons of money, and was hailed as an unmitigated success. He is also responsible for instants classics such as Blade Runner and Alien. Recent flops however, like Prometheus and Exodus, have shaken viewers’ confidence much like the Ravens’ last season. Much like Scott’s recent films, the Ravens could go 6-10 with a sluggish season or 10-6 with a playoff berth or better.

Finally, my Detroit Lions are the film Requiem for a Dream. Year after year I find myself coming back to football just as excited as the year before, even though my favorite team is historically one of the worst in the NFL. They were the only team to post a winless 0-16 season after all. Much like the lives of four people who are tragically ruined by drugs in Requiem for a Dream, my world seems to come apart each fall. I keep coming back to my Honolulu Blue-clad team with high expectations that are set simply to be crushed almost instantly. The fact that I can even make a comparison between being a Lions’ fan and a drug addict shows just how bad my team is. At least I will have more time to watch movies when they start the season 1-7 and the sweet high of football season wears off.

For those interested to take a look back into some of the greatest football matches, then you should take a look at the history of St James’ Park here.

Watch and Talk is a column that discusses movies. They are not always reviewed, but are simply talked about. Watch and Talk looks at the various cultural aspects and impacts of films.

Alex Cole's Final Mock Draft. Mariota Enters A Quarterback Competition. Bears Get Their Quarterback.

With the draft about a week away, it’s time to post my final mock draft for this draft cycle. This mock draft, I made each pick and trade as if I was the General Manager of each team where I picked off need. I restricted myself by drafting based of position and selecting the best available player at each position instead of picking who I thought was the best available player. Overall I made very few trades, the trades I did make were where I thought a team and a player matched up extremely well.

The most active team was Chicago as they made two trades. The Bears are extremely desperate for young, controllable talent on both sides of the ball. They were able to get the quarterback of the future and did so without mortgaging the future. The Cowboys pick up a talented running back to replace DeMarco Murray. The biggest winner from this draft for me is the New Orleans Saints who used all three picks to select starting caliber players at really good values.

There were several teams I wanted to trade up or down for, but was unable to due to a lack of trade partners or assets. These teams just selected the best player available if the draft spot wasn’t worth the player that was right for the team.

My next NFL piece will be a review of the draft. Until then enjoy both my final mock and the real draft.

A strengthened defense, along with an outstanding rushing attack, has the Dallas Cowboys out to a fast start in the 2014 NFL season.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – After the typical 8-8 season from the Dallas Cowboys in 2013, America’s Team is 5-1 in 2014.

Yes, you read that correctly. The Dallas Cowboys are 5-1, after defeating the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks 30-23 in Seattle.

How ‘bout them Cowboys?

This marks a five-game winning streak for the Cowboys who, after going 0-4 in preseason, dropped their regular season opener to the San Francisco 49ers.

Things didn’t look good for Dallas week one against San Francisco. DeMarco Murray fumbled on the opening drive, which was recovered and taken back for a touchdown by 49ers cornerback, Chris Culliver.

With three Tony Romo interceptions, the Cowboys had four total turnovers that against the 49ers and were unable to comeback 28-3 halftime deficit, losing 28-17.

Since then, Dallas has powered its way to a 5-1 record with wins over Tennessee, St. Louis, New Orleans, Houston, and Seattle.

What’s with the turnaround you ask?

Defense.

The Cowboys entered this season with many questions after displaying what was supposed to be an NFL defense in 2013.

How bad was it? Bad. The Cowboys ranked dead last in defense in 2013 and had no answer when it came to halting the passing game. In 2013, NFL teams combined for 4,800 yards through the air, sending the Cowboys to a third straight 8-8 record. (Not to mention allowing a franchise record 6,645 yards in 2013).

Well America: Not this year.

The Cowboys defense currently sits 12th in the league in passing yards allowed and 17th in rushing yards allowed this season. The Cowboys haven’t allowed a single wide receiver to gain over 100 yards and have only allowed one running back, Arian Foster, to gain over 100 yards in a week five overtime-win against the Texans.

Dallas Cowboys linebacker, Rolando McClain, currently leads the Dallas defense with two interceptions. (Photo: Matthew Emmons USA TODAY Sports)

A lot of the success on defense is accredited to the promotion of Rod Marinelli to defensive coordinator for the Cowboys. Prior to Marinelli, Monte Kiffin looked to rejuvenate the Cowboys defense by switching from a 3-4, to a 4-3, with little to no avail (please see Cowboys/Broncos 2013 box score).

The biggest difference for the Cowboys defense is the play of their linebackers and in the secondary. Many wondered if Dallas could bounce back after middle-linebacker, Sean Lee, suffered a torn ACL prior to the 2014 season. The play from guys like Barry Church, Justin Durant, Rolando McClain, J.J. Wilcox, and Bruce Carter have made the Dallas defense a much more respectable group. Dallas now boasts the 15th ranked defense in the league, a far cry from the 2013 ranking of last.

The defense allows for Dallas to open up the playbook offensively too. In 2013, there were too many times where opposing teams new that the Cowboys would abandon the run game early, because they had so much ground to make up.

How about that Cowboys offense?

It’s hard to believe that I have gone this long about the Cowboys 5-1 record without mentioning the dominance DeMarco Murray has displayed. The offensive game plan for the Cowboys this season has been simple:

Run the ball. A lot.

Murray, in his fourth season with the Cowboys, has rushed for league-leading 785 yards and is averaging 26.5 carries through six game. That average is ten yards more than in his 14-game average in 2013. Murray is tied with Jim Brown at six for most consecutive games with 100+ yards to start a season.

The fact that Murray leads the league in rushing gives Tony Romo plenty to be happy about.

Tony Romo is off to a fast start this season for the Dallas Cowboys. (Photo: Tim Heitman, US Presswire)

Romo underwent surgery last December to repair a herniated disc in his back. He’s coming off a great 2013 campaign where he chucked 31 touchdowns and threw only ten interceptions. He’s off to a fast start in 2014 with 11 touchdowns and five interceptions and just outside the top ten in passing yards.

The running game for the Cowboys gives Romo the ability to not screw things up. While I’m a firm believe that Romo isn’t always to blame for the unfortunate fourth quarter interception, it’s hard to take the blame away from someone holding the smoking gun. Am I right?

Romo has been a beneficiary to the dominant ground game due to the fact he isn’t dropping back to pass all the time, which is keeping him out of dangerous situations with potential for injury.

Holding steady

While it’s all high-fives and happy times in Arlington, Texas; the Cowboys still have a lot of hard work ahead of them.

Dallas has a week 11 bye, but prior to that they face the New York Giants, Washington Redskins, Arizona Cardinals, and the Jacksonville Jaguars.

While the NFC East has a left a lot to be desired (who really knows what the New York Giants are going to do this year?), the Cowboys will look to capitalize on the next four games.

While winning four more in a row could be tough, there is a strong possibility Dallas goes 3-1 over the next four weeks. That means the Dallas Cowboys could be sitting at 8-2. If the Cowboys could go 8-2, they would just need one more win to avoid another 8-8 season.

This team has higher aspirations thought.

The Dallas Cowboys have a legitimate shot to win the NFC East and make the playoffs this year. America’s Team has a chance for something special this year, let’s just hope they can continue what they’ve been doing so far in 2014.

And let’s face it, a Cowboys team in the playoffs provides for better television than a Cowboys team not in the playoffs.

Here we are again, staring the NFL Draft right in the face.

The 2014 NFL Draft is roughly one week away (Thursday, May 08). NFL analysts and scouts have been pouring over hours of in-game footage, combine and pro-day results as they change their mock drafts weekly. This Thursday night in May will fulfill the dreams of 32 collegiate football players. For some, their career will result in their busts being enshrined in the NFL Hall of Fame , but for others, they may turn out to be another type of bust in the NFL.

Aside from the jaw dropping athleticism shown by Jadeveon Clowney, I’m looking for one guy to completely steal the spotlight in this 2014 NFL Draft class.

That man is Johnny Manziel.

Think about it. Here’s a guy (Manziel) who as a freshman won the most prestigious individual award in collegiate football (arguably in all of football), the Heisman Trophy.

As a Texas A&M Aggie Manziel threw for over 7,800 yards, 63 touchdowns, and only 22 interceptions. To say he doesn’t have the NFL potential to be a Sunday starter is complete garbage. Sure, there has been the reported on-and-off field incident, but what Manziel brings to the table shouldn’t be taken lightly.

Manziel seems to have the ability on the football field to make something out of nothing. In a league full of top notch defenders though, it will be tough for Manziel to equal his “luck” which made him so exciting to watch as a college player.

As a 6’1’’ 210 lb quarterback, Manziel’s size is comparable to Steve Young who was listed at 6’2’’ and 210 lbs. Young, who made his name as the quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, was known for his ability to both throw and run the ball efficiently, similar to Manziel. While comparisons are held to very little standards these days, it is fair to say that given the skill set we have seen from Johnny Football over the course of two years makes a good case for the pre-draft excitement surrounding him.

Who will take the chance on Manziel?

In the past few days rumors have swirled throughout the NFL about the Dallas Cowboys making a move that would put Johnny Manziel in AT&T Stadium in 2014.

Current Dallas Cowboys starting quarterback, Tony Romo, is 34 years old and has gone through the grinder in the past few seasons. Romo underwent two back surgeries in 2013, one for a cyst and the other for a herniated disk suffered against the Washington Redskins causing him to miss the week 17 finale against the Philadelphia Eagles.

While Romo is coming off of a solid year where he threw 31 touchdowns and only 10 interceptions, the Cowboys must question the longevity of his tenure as a Cowboy. Romo is currently under a six-year contract signed in worth $108 million making him a Cowboy for life. While all the quarterback security seems stable for Dallas, is it really all that stable?

With Romo’s current back issues one must question what will happen if he has to abruptly end his career due to back problems. Insert Johnny Manziel.

Manziel to the Cowboys would be a great move on and off the field. Not only is Johnny Manziel a Texas native, but his past with Texas A&M makes the move to Dallas that much more attractive. Manziel’s presence in Dallas could rejuvenate a team that has experienced a lack of success throughout the past few years. The Cowboys are a relatively young team. With Jason Witten nearing the end of his career and Dez Bryant emerging as one of the top wide receivers in the game, Manziel could learn quickly under the direction of Jason Garrett and some great weapons on offense.

On a final note: Expect anything and everything come draft day and don’t forget that Jerry Jones is the general manager and owner of the Dallas Cowboys.

Jerry Jones loves exciting NFL Draft prospects. In the 2012 draft, Jones and the Cowboys traded up eight spots to draft cornerback Morris Claiborne out of LSU. Two years prior to that in 2010, Dallas traded their first and third round pick to New England to claim wide receiver Dez Bryant out of Oklahoma State.

The Dallas Cowboys traded up eight spots in the 2012 NFL Draft to select cornerback Morris Claiborne. (AP Photo)

The Cowboys have been known to go after big name talent hoping for big time rewards. While the 2012 pick in Morris Claiborne hasn’t proven to be worthwhile (yet), the Cowboys making a big move (perhaps for Johnny Manziel) in the 2014 NFL Draft would not be shocking.

With the 2014 NFL Draft in the horizon, it is time for a new crop of talent to take center stage.

Johnny Manziel is going to bring the NFL a lot of excitement, talent, and probably a little bit of controversy. Is the NFL ready?

The Houston Texans are now on the clock.
