The Awful Purdies traded vocals and genres throughout the “Java Blend” hour, ranging from Katie Roche’s smoky “Pennies in the Dust Pan,” Sarah Driscoll’s old soul lyrics in “The Most” and observant “Portrait,” Nicole Upchurch’s cheerfully melancholic “Perennials.” All the while, Katie Burne’s backing vocals and cello kept a steady beat. In between songs, they giggled through their own special stage language, a product of their six year relationship with one another. The concert wonderfully rounded out when they traded vocals verse by verse in the Katzenjammer-inspired “over-30s love song” titled, “Yes, But…”

What happens when you put on a Christmas pageant with Sunday School children? Absolute chaos, nostalgia, and lots of cookies.

This show is the third installment to “Church Basement Ladies” written by Jim Stowell and Jessica Zuehlke (music by Drew Jansen), which takes us back to 1950s in rural Minnesota. It may sound innocent enough, but there’s no lack of drama; both in the original and in this production with rivaling points of view, music, Christmas politics and a behind the scenes look at what it takes to put on a Christmas pageant.

The Church Basement Ladies will be performing “Away in a Basement” at the Englert Theatre November 14th at 2 and 7. Tickets are  $25 for seniors and $30 for general public.

On October 11, 2012 the band will be grace the stage of the historical Englert Theatre, which is in the midst of its Centennial celebration. The group will perform Nosferatu, which is an adaptation from the Bram Stoker’s classic Dracula. Although it was never approved by Stoker’s estate for unauthorization for movie rights, Nosferatu has nevertheless become a classic with the iconic images of Max Schreck as Count Orlock preying on Greta Schroder’s Ellen Hutter.

Nosferatu has been brought to Iowa City by way of the nonprofit arts organization, FilmScene. Within a year, Filmscene has successfully secured an interim spot in the old Vito’s for an art-film house, launching the Starlite Theatre movie series on the Riverside stage in City Park and is pursuing a permanent spot in the proposed building The Chauncey, a multi-use space that would be next to the Chauncey Swan Parking Ramp. Just announced this past week, The Chauncey would not only house Filmscene with its two movie screens, but also a café, gallery space, and twelve bowling lanes.

So come celebrate Filmscene’s latest achievement, grab a glass of wine or beer from concessions, and enjoy the following events in the next two weeks and stay tuned for more!

Despite the beats in “Season in Hell” and “I Got Nothing” this is perhaps the most chill the Dum Dum Girls have ever been. Even its first single “Lord Knows” finds itself between stoner rock and ‘60s drum beats. But all indie expectation for this EP immediately pauses during their cover of Strawberry Switchblade’s “Trees and Flowers” showing Frankie Rose and crew are more than black eyelined boot wearing rock girls.
