Tweets and comments made by a 19-year old male prove that the American Sexual Education program needs to be revised.

Recently I’ve come across some men who don’t quite understand the female reproductive system and how it works.

One of these men went to Twitter to publicly ask why women can’t just “hold their bladders” rather than using a tampon.

Now, this logic just baffles me. How is a woman supposed to be able to hold blood inside their uterus until they can make it to a bathroom? Most people should have been taught at some point that women have no control over that. Not to mention that women don’t bleed from their the same hole they pee from, so it would be impossible to hold their bladder and expect to not have any blood come out of them.

Not only that but this teenage male is criticizing women for something that they have no control over. Women have no control over the fact that every month for about a week, they bleed nonstop. Women don’t choose to spend on thousands of dollars in their lifetime on feminine products.

In a woman’s lifetime she will spend:

About $40 on heating pads to help with cramps

$95 or more on acne medicine to help combat the breakouts that the change in hormones cause.

$443 on panty liners to help with spotting right after their period ends and during their period in case of overflowing.

$1230 on Midol or other over the counter medications to treat cramps.

$1773 on tampons.

$2280 on new underwear due to accidental stains in currently owned ones.

$11,400 for birth control prior to Obamacare.

To see how the statistics were figured out, look at them here.

This self proclaimed Meninist has really changed my opinion on America’s sexual education programs.

Every state in America has some sort of program to teach pre-teenagers and above about their sexual organs and the consequences of sex, whether those consequences are good or bad. This course is publicly known to teach everything from condoms to STDs and STIs to intercourse and pregnancy. While this is a good start to getting the younger generations informed on sex and precautions they should be taking, there are so many important topics that are missing from the curriculum.

Along with sex and STDs, female and male reproductive organs need to be more discussed. Males need to be informed on how a woman gets periods and why they get periods. Schools should be teaching how this whole process works as well as explaining how this corresponds with pregnancy.

Apart from discussing the reproductive organs and how they function, it is crucial to teach young adults about pregnancy and childbirth. While many assume that pregnancy only involves carrying a child, there is much more to it. Young adults need to learn about the different stages of pregnancy, the possible complications that can arise, and how to care for themselves during this time. As part of the sex education program, it is essential to incorporate information about the roles of gynecologists and obstetricians in managing pregnancies. For example, students can be taught about the services provided by a gynaecologist and obstetrician sydney cbd, such as prenatal care, delivery, and postnatal care. This knowledge can help young adults make informed decisions about their reproductive health and seek medical assistance when necessary.

On the other hand, females need to be taught how men only have one hole while females have two and the differences that this comes with. Such as it being hard for men to pee when they are hard and how sometimes men are not able to get hard, and that’s not necessarily the woman’s fault.

These things need to be discussed in a formal setting not only for the opposite gender, but also for people to know what is happening to their own body. Females need to be taught about their periods in a setting that they don’t have to be embarrassed in. While males need to be taught about their own sexual organs in the same setting. Regardless of whether or not a parent decides to explain these things to their children, kids are more likely to listen more in a class that is all about these things.

A women’s reproductive organs do not affect the men directly. However, it does affect men who marry and have sexual relations with a woman. They need to know how their menstrual cycle will affect the woman’s fertility period and how that will affect the chances of pregnancy.

This knowledge also affects law makers and public officials because these people need to understand a woman before they try to make laws that will affect items they receive to help with their reproductive organs. Laws such as birth control insurance coverage, planned parenthood, abortion laws, and so much more.

Men cannot go around thinking that women are exaggerating their symptoms and making things up to get sympathy. The education system needs to be willing to teach each gender’s reproductive body in order to instill awareness for everyone.

Spending 20 minutes getting ready for an 8:30 class while some of your girl peers obviously spend an hour or more is so frustrating.

Reason #3:

When I have a class at 8 or 8:30, my peers are lucky if I even brush my hair before hopping on the bus to my class. I usually wake up 15 or 20 minutes before I have to get downstairs, giving me just enough time to put on my remy quality hair extensions and apply powder on my face, brush my teeth, change clothes and make myself a coffee. This is completely okay with me in the mornings. Changing clothes, brushing my teeth, and making a coffee are the things that no matter what I have to do before I go out in public. But putting makeup on and doing my hair is something that I definitely choose sleep over on a daily basis.

Not everyone thinks like this though. The thing that really grinds my gears is when I walk into class and see a girl with her hair curled, makeup done up and wearing a super dressy outfit… at 8 in the morning. It’s not even that I’m “intimidated” by the fact that she did all of this. I can do my hair and makeup like most of the girls, but I would never wake up earlier just to do so. Actually, I’m planning to buy unique short prom dresses for 2023 for they are sexy and fun dresses!

Yes, I do understand that people have to right to dress how they want and I’m sure other girls judge me for the small amount of effort that I put into my appearance in the mornings. But having your eyeliner winged and your hair curled is just a bit too much. Not to mention dressing up like that is not comfortable at all. You don’t get the luxury of rubbing your eyes. You don’t get to be worry-free about whether or not your makeup looks alright or if your eyeliner is smudging or if your foundation is blended well enough.

One thing I’ve also noticed that many girls who dress up every day for class stop doing so once they get a significant other. Interesting, huh? With this in mind, I feel like the girls who spend an extra hour or two getting ready for an 8:30 class have the feeling that they need to impress their classmates. This is a ridiculous assumption. The girls in the class understand if you don’t have time to look A1. And if the guys expect you to always be dolled up, they aren’t someone you want to be with.

I understand if maybe they need to go to a job or something after class but that’s rarely the case. The fact that many girls have this feeling that they always have to look good to go to a lecture with 300 people at 8:30 in the morning needs to be extinguished.

The Paper Kites are an indie-rock folk band that originated from Australia. They began in 2010 and there are five members who each do a different role. The album, “twelvefour,” came out just recently and it was a highly anticipated release. The album name came about because the band stayed up and wrote all 10 of these songs from 12 a.m. until 4 a.m.

Below is my take on each of the songs off the album.

Electric Indigo: I was super down for this song. It starts off with a super calm and steady beat, and then they start singing. When the singing and the beat overlap, it really is something else. The layers of vocals and instruments in this song are awesome.

Renegade: This song is also amazing. You can hear more vocals in this song, but the beat and instruments are still very much there. Also, the lyrics are very relatable to many people. It’s kinda a sad song and that becomes very apparent in the beginning of the song.

Bleed Confusion: The music in this song is so good, but I hated the vocals. It wasn’t so much the lyrics, but they weren’t singing; it was more like he was talking overtop of the music. I wasn’t a fan of that.

Relevator Eyes: This was an okay song. I thought that the beat was way too fast for the tempo that was being sung, although it did end up flowing together. I also feel like toward the end the music just keeps dragging on with no lyrics and really no point.

Neon Crimson: I like how this song starts out different than the rest. It starts off very slow and low, and then gradually picks up. The lyrics along with he music bring about a calming aura when you listen to this song. It’s very relaxing.

I’m Lying to You Cause I’m Lost: I’m not really a fan of this song. I feel like the instrumentals overpower the lyrics way too much for it to be enjoyable.

A Silent Cause: This song is super different from the rest of the album. It’s very simple compared to the other songs that have more layered instrumentals. I love it. The lyrics are very nice to listen to and they have a good rhythm to them.

Woke Up from a Dream: This song makes me wanna bob my head and sing even though I don’t know the lyrics. It’s a very upbeat song that makes you want to be happy. The rhythm of the lyrics goes along so well with the instrumentals. It’s pretty great.

Turns Within Me, Turns Without Me: This song reminds me of a song I would hear in a coffee shop. It’s very calming. The instruments are in the background but still a main part of this song, especially at intervals when there are no lyrics, just calming music.

Too Late: This song would be the perfect slow dance song. A little depressing, but still good. It makes me want to be sad while I listen to it. It’s pretty good, the only issue is that it’s 6 minutes long. Yes, 6 whole minutes for one song.

Overall this album was definitely not a disappointment. It lived up to the anticipation and was very creative for being done in four hours in the middle of the night. With the release of the album, the band also announced that they are going on tour. It started on November 12 in Los Angeles and will end on December 8 in New York City.

Reason #2

With autumn here and winter right around the corner, girls are starting to bring out their pants. In particular, their leggings. Wearing these, however, does not give any guy a reason to catcall a girl.

Photo via: shoptiques.com

There are several reasons we, as women, wear leggings. We can dress them up or down, they’re super comfortable, and they go with anything. Because they’re becoming more popular, they come in different colors, lengths, and materials. Some girls wear them to workout in while some wear them to go to interviews. We don’t wear them to impress guys. In the morning, I don’t think to myself, “I’m going to wear leggings today so a guy will notice my bum.”

Photo via: venus.com

Wearing leggings, or any tight clothing, does not give men the right to catcall women whether it’s on the street or in class or at work. Contrary to popular belief, catcalling is not considered flirty or flattering. Girls find it very disrespectful. I don’t know why guys ever began whistling and shouting at girls on the street, because it is not something we enjoy.

When I’m walking on campus, I don’t want guys to whistle at me as I pass by. I don’t want them to the turn around and break their necks just to get a longer look at me. I don’t want them to tell me that I need to smile more when they “compliment” me. It is not a compliment that I’m getting. It’s something that has made walking alone super uncomfortable. When I walk to class, or to a bus stop, or back to my dorm, or anywhere, I should not have to feel self-conscious about what I’m wearing because of what guys are saying. I shouldn’t have to worry about catcalls.

An organization that is aimed towards stopping catcalling has done surveys on the amount of times women get catcalled. Not surprisingly, 99% said that they had been harassed on the street at some point. This is not something women look forward to. We don’t feel flattered by this type of recognition.

With women bringing out some of their tighter clothing, please remember that catcalling is not something anyone should ever do. We don’t enjoy feeling uncomfortable in what we’re wearing.

Reason #1

When students get to school, I’m sure most of them thought they wouldn’t have to deal with the clouds of smoke coming from cigarettes. Oh how wrong they were.

The Old Capitol on the University of Iowa campus. (Photo creds: Huffington Post)

In 2008, the University of Iowa banned smoking across campus after Iowa City adopted the Smoke-Free Air Act. Even with this ban in place, people still stand on campus and smoke. After seven years, you’d think people would start to respect the law. Not only is this disrespectful to the university officials and to the city officials, but it’s also very disrespectful to other students.

When I walk to class, I don’t want to walk past people and be forced to endure the smoke and smells from cigarette smoke. I understand that people have an addiction to tobacco, but the least they could do is to not do it on campus. But walking into class smelling like an ashtray when I’m not even the one smoking isn’t appealing to me.

(Photo creds: mydoorsign.com)

What shocks me the most is that faculty members go on campus and smoke. If we can’t expect the faculty to follow the rules, why would we want to follow them? If my professor doesn’t follow the rules on campus, what is going to persuade me to follow them? People don’t like being the first to do something, but if they see someone else doing it, they are more likely to partake in that activity. If someone wants to smoke and they see faculty doing it, they are more likely to agree that even though there is a ban, it is acceptable.

Please, for all of us students and faculty out there who don’t smoke and who respect the ban, follow the campus policies on smoking.
