Edit 1: Iowa’s AD Gary Barta released a statement: “Obviously, we are disappointed tonight’s game had to be cancelled. Fran and his team are in contention for a Big Ten title and were looking forward to the opportunity to getting back on the court. The most important part of this equation is safety. We are in full support of Indiana’s decision to postpone the game based on the issues with Assembly Hall. Coach McCaffery and his team are returning from Indiana tonight. We are working with Indiana Athletic Director Fred Glass and the Big Ten Conference to determine when and, possibly, where to play the game.”

Iowa’s game on Tuesday night with Indiana was postponed with no make-up date set for now due to a falling metal beam in Assembly Hall. Here’s the video of the beam falling.

In an official release from Indiana, both tonight’s game and tomorrows were on hold until Assembly Hall had been fully examined. As seen in the video, an 8′ x 14″ beam fell into an area of seats heavily damaging them. Indiana cited safety as the main reason behind postponing the game.

The IndyStar then reported that Rick Fuson, chief operating officer of Pacers Sports & Entertainment, told The Star via email, “We did offer Bankers Life to hold the games (men’s and women’s, on Wednesday) night but understand that Iowa may be on the way out of town.”

Even though the Pacers are away from home on that night, Brendan Stiles confirmed via sources that Iowa was on the way back to Iowa City.

There is no-makeup date yet but the Big Ten policy on the issue stipulates that Iowa-Indiana have three days to decide on a suitable makeup date before the conference will decide on one.

On a more lighthearted note, here’s what @CBSSports writer Matt Norlander had to say about the situation:

Iowa-Indiana game postponed due to chair damage and it’s not Fran McCaffery’s fault.

— Matt Norlander (@MattNorlander) February 18, 2014

More info will be posted when it becomes available. Updates will be posted above.

“We just got our heads straight at halftime,” Lisa Bluder said of her teams effort.

That effort wasn’t enough though according to Bluder,

“I wish we would have started the game like that.”

Some costly late free throws potentially cost Iowa the game late, the team finished 21-of-32 from the line, something that will have to drastically improve if Iowa wants to win close games down the stretch.

“It’s unfortunate because we were out-rebounded by nine, they shot better from the free throw line and those are things we can control,” Bluder said about her teams performance.

Overall, a very below average first half was too big of a deficit to overcome for Iowa, who will travel to Cedar Falls to take on Northern Iowa on Sunday.

Iowa now moves to 4-1 on the season. More coverage on the game to come tomorrow including quotes, player grades and a look forward.

Iowa found themselves reaching deep on their bench for help after both Bethany Doolittle and Claire Till both had early fouls, but Iowa still defeated the Stony Brook Seawolves 78-40.

“This is one of those game’s we were waiting for as far as the change in officiating,” Lisa Bluder said, “ We were kind of dreading and it came to fruition tonight.”

Doolittle picked up two fouls within the first six minutes of the game and didn’t see action until the start of the second half, that required Iowa to go to freshman walk-on Hailey Schneden for nine minutes of action in which she had 2 points, 1 block and 1 rebound.

The flow of the game in general was very out of sync for both teams as a total of 46 foul constantly stopped the game.

“What has me concerned is there’s no consistency across the board with that (fouls) and that’s hard for the players to adjust and it leaves your players on the bench for long stretches of time.” Bluder said.

From early on Iowa used it’s size and speed to get inside, specifically with Ally Disterhoft and Theairra Taylor. Taylor, the lone senior on the team, took the ball to the rim for 10 first half points.

Disterhoft was as efficient as usual, going 6-of-8 on field goals and totaled 17 points, leading Iowa in scoring.

“Ally shot the ball extremely well and was our leading rebounder as well.” Bluder said.

Disterhoft kept the team’s offensive flow in check beginning in the second quarter with an easy streaking basket. From then on out it was all Iowa who outscored the Seawolves 42-19 in the second half.

Schneden had more minutes in today’s contest against the Seawolves than all of her combined minutes so far this season. She entered the game in the first half when Doolittle and Till both had two fouls.

“She’s had to step in and play a considerable amount and some of that was in the first half in crunch time.”

Schneden played well in her nine minutes, but Bluder mentioned that it was not an “ideal” situation playing a freshman walk-on in crunch time games. Bluder was concerned about the consistency of the officiating and the effect it would have on her very short bench.

Taylor was happy with the bench effort today who scored 33 of the Hawkeyes 78 points today citing that they stepped up when needed for the team.

“It’s awesome, we have a lot of trust in all of our teammates.” Taylor said.

Iowa now will not play a home game for two weeks and start their road trip by traveling to play the Colorado Buffaloes. This is the Hawkeyes first road game of the season and their first road game against a ranked opponent.

“Any time you get a ranked opponent it builds momentum and it builds confidence for your team.” Bluder said.

The Buffaloes are 2-0 with victories over Colorado State and Alcorn State, they currently sit at No. 17 in the AP poll.

In last weeks game’s Iowa outscored their opponents 154-78

The Iowa women’s basketball team is scheduled to play both Arkansas Pine-Bluff and Stony Brook this week. They are coming off a 97-93 upset victory over No. 14 Dayton in the Hawkeye Challenge that gave them their first home tournament title since 2010.

Here are five things you should know about the team this week:

Samantha Logic captures awards
Not only did she play lights out during the Hawkeye Challenge, she played the last four minutes of the game and overtime with part of her tooth missing after a loose ball scuffle. The highlight of the day from her was a no-look pass that caught everyone from Dayton off guard. Logic was named tournament MVP.
Logic was named Big Ten Player of the week, her third time winning the award. She totaled 44 points in two Hawkeye Challenge games.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff is on the rise, but not there yet
The SWAC team won two games from the 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 seasons combined before new coach Nate Kilbert took them to 11 wins last season. With the seven seed they made it to the semi-finals of the SWAC tournament but their tournament hopes were cut short by Kilbert’s former team Mississippi Valley State University. This should be an easy non-conference game for the Hawkeyes. Iowa should be capable of winning by 20 or 30.

Stony Brook doesn’t even know what their own mascot is.
Apparently when people ask “what’s a seawolf?” the appropriate response from Stony Brook Seawolves fans is, “I’m a seawolf.”
The Seawolves won 14 games last year and return a lot of the talent from last year. The Seawolves were picked to finish third in their conference by media. They should be a decent team, Better than Ark-PB but still should be an easy win for the Hawkeyes. They should open the season 4-0 with four straight home games.

Lisa Bluder consistently beats top teams
Bluder ‘s bunch has beat a top 25 team in 12 of 14 seasons and a top 15 team in 10 of her seasons at Iowa. Last year Iowa defeated seven ranked teams, a program record.

Bluder is coming up on the all-time Iowa win record
Lisa Bluder only needs 17 wins to pass Vivian Stringer for first all-time in Iowa women’s basketball coaching wins. Stringer is in the college basketball hall of fame. Bluder currently sits at 253 wins.

With 6:45 left in the second half, the Iowa Hawkeyes found themselves up by 11 on No. 14 Dayton. That lead drained as the second half winded down, and after not finding the bucket for a few minutes found themselves down by five with 30 seconds remaining.

“Being able to come from behind to win a basketball game is great for our team,” Head Coach Lisa Bluder said.

What followed were two made free throw shots from Ally Disterhoft, who had struggled from the line in their first two games this season. With the ball in Dayton’s possession, Iowa had to find a way to get the ball back.

Tough pressure from Bethany Doolittle forced a Cassie Sant turnover, and in the ensuing possession led to the biggest basket of Sam Logic’s career. The three-point field goal to tie the game came with nine seconds left and sent Carver Hawkeye Arena into the loudest roar of the day. That bucket forced the game into overtime.

“It felt good and I was pretty open thanks to The(airra Taylor),” Logic said on how she felt after the shot left her hand. That shot tied the game at 90 points.

In overtime Iowa started off with a basket-and-one from Disterhoft and never looked back. Dayton only mustered three points in overtime and struggled to keep the ball in their possession. Iowa finished the overtime with seven points to win 97-93.

Iowa played a complete team game against Dayton, tallying 30 assists on 34 field goals. Samantha Logic’s 14 assists, both a team and arena record, helped the Hawkeyes on that front.

Both teams pressed their tempo in both halves and Bluder said she was happy with that.

Iowa’s largest lead of the day came halfway through the first half, in which they led by 15 and controlled the first quarter of the game.

“I feel like our teams mirror each other,” Bluder said about both the Hawkeyes and the Flyers, “I felt comfortable with the pace out there today.”

This is Iowa’s first win over a ranked opponent this year; in 2012 they had seven such wins, a program record.

Iowa lead by double-digits in both halves, and the defensive breakdowns were one thing that worried Bluder.

“Maybe we need to work on defense some.. there was a lot of offense out there today,” Bluder said.

Logic finished the game with 16 points, 14 assists and five rebounds. That stat-line, along with her 28 points in Friday’s game got her voted at the 2013 Hawkeye Challenge MVP. Bethany Doolittle and Kali Peschel were also voted on six player all-tournament team for the Hawkeyes. Doolittle led the team with 22 points and Peschel in rebounds with 14.

With Iowa finishing 2-0 in the round robin Hawkeye Challenge they take away 1st place in their home tournament. It’s the first time they’ve won their home tournament since 2010.

Sophomore Nicole Smith is going to be sidelined after tearing her meniscus during the Hawkeyes exhibition win over Concordia. Smith didn’t seem to visibly injure it on the court, but according to Lisa Bluder the injury is in the “five percent that has to be sutured and that means the recovery process is longer.”

The news of Nicole Smith’s injury is disheartening, especially considering the impact it will have on her season. Meniscus tears can be particularly tricky, often requiring not only surgical intervention but also a substantial recovery period.

In such cases, it’s vital for athletes to understand their rights and options, especially when their health and performance are on the line. This is where resources like the Elsner Law Firm can play a critical role. They specialize in personal injury cases and can provide athletes with the necessary legal guidance to navigate the complexities that injuries can bring, including potential compensation for lost playing time.

In the wake of such injuries, having the right equipment on hand can make a significant difference in the recovery process. For athletes, especially those in high-impact sports, a well-stocked sports first aid kit is an essential tool to manage and treat injuries effectively before medical professionals can provide further care. These kits typically contain a variety of supplies designed specifically for sports-related injuries, such as sprains, strains, cuts, bruises, and more.

The importance of quick and effective initial care cannot be overstated, as it can help minimize the long-term impact of an injury and facilitate a smoother recovery. For those seeking to equip their team or facility with reliable sports first aid kits, these cloth kits offer an excellent option. The cloth material is both durable and flexible, making it ideal for withstanding the rough demands of sports environments while also ensuring comfort and ease of use. These kits typically include all the necessary items for basic sports injury care, such as bandages, ice packs, antiseptic wipes, and splints.

The flexibility of the cloth allows the kit to fit into small spaces, making it portable and easy to store. Whether you’re treating a minor injury or providing immediate care for something more serious, having a well-organized, quality kit can be a game-changer in managing sports-related injuries efficiently and effectively.

The setback Nicole Smith faces highlights how injuries, particularly those requiring surgical intervention, can disrupt an athlete’s career and long-term plans. The road to recovery demands patience and proper medical care, but it’s equally crucial for athletes to be aware of the broader implications of such injuries, including potential missteps in treatment. In sports, where every detail matters, even a small oversight in medical care can significantly affect an athlete’s recovery and future performance.

One such concern involves treatments like intramuscular injections, which are often administered for pain relief, anti-inflammatory purposes, or to support recovery. However, an incorrect intramuscular injection can lead to severe complications, such as nerve damage, muscle atrophy, or infections. For athletes navigating these challenges, the guidance of a vaccine injury lawyer can be indispensable.

These professionals specialize in protecting the rights of individuals who have suffered adverse outcomes from medical procedures, ensuring they receive fair representation and potential compensation. Athletes like Nicole, dealing with both physical and legal hurdles, benefit from this expertise, safeguarding their health and future in sports.

Smith was the backup center, and the only depth with serious height besides Bethany Doolittle. Now Bluder is going to try and have one of her power forwards take over the backup center duties in her absence.

“We are having Claire Till learn a lot of the five position for us, “ Bluder said, “obviously not the big bulky body you like to see at the five, but at the same time she’s tough.”

Till led the team in rebounding with nine in their exhibition, and played very well in the zone scheme at the five with her ability to get around the court.

The injury really does hurt Iowa’s ability to play against teams with any height, but in other aspects of the game it gives them an ability to open up some other parts of their game. Thanks to lawyers of https://www.sweetesq.com/, who helped claim most of the injury related medical bills.

Bluder said that Iowa is now with Till running the five going to go even more up-tempo and really try and use their mobility to their advantage. Samantha Logic is a great fit for running up and down in an offense with her ability to find assists off of the transition.

Iowa as a team assisted on 26 of 36 field goals in the exhibition and Bluder said this is the type of team that is going to have a higher field goal percentage.

“Our players know. They are going to pass up an average shot to bet a better shot by making one more pass.” Bluder said.

Ally Disterhoft is adapting to the one more pass mentality very well. Multiple times she passed up a shot that would have been a guaranteed take her senior year and Iowa City West, but now embracing the one more has led to more opportunity for the freshman.

With Till moving to the five, now only Disterhoft and Kali Peschel will be available to play the four, perhaps allowing her to feel more comfortable in the position. Bluder said that Disterhoft would definitely see more minutes this weekend during the two home games for the Hawkeye challenge.

Another downside to the Smith injury is the fact that with the rule changes occurring and as teams commit more fouls as they get used to how the official’s call the game, Iowa may be forced to get Kathryn Reynolds back into the lineup sooner than they believed.

The other bright side of the injury, if there is another one is that it happened very early in the season. This allows Smith to potentially get back on the court in late January to gear up for a month of conference play and potentially Iowa’s sixth straight try at the NCAA tournament.

Offense: B+

Iowa gave Bethany Doolittle 16 shots, more than double the next most attempts for the Hawkeyes. If Iowa is going to succeed this year they’re going to have to get the ball inside early and often, something they did very well against the undersized Concordia Bears. Doolittle shot the ball 16 times without getting fouled, which downgrades it from an A, if she can get to the line as well as get good looks, Iowa should have a much easier time shooting outside as well.

Melissa Dixon was 4-of-5 from three-point range, including two within the first minute of the game to give Iowa a 6-0 lead. Dixon is going to be relied on heavily as well, she obviously isn’t going to shoot 80 percent from three all year, but taking five good shots is something she should aim for.

Defense: C+

Early Iowa struggled in rotating to the weak side consistently. This left Concordia only down by two when Iowa headed to the first media timeout. Struggling early against lesser competition is a recipe for disaster, especially against some of the teams Iowa will play in the non-conference. Concordia finished with 1 point per possession, an average number.

After Nicole Smith went out with an injury, there was a clear struggle with defensive rebounding. Box outs weren’t that great and Concordia ended the day with 15 offensive rebounds, far too many.

The zone was the bright spot for the day, in non-center lineups the zone was used consistently and brought pressure and good rotations. Concordia struggled heavily with the zone defense. The zone will have to become a staple if Smith is out for an extended period of time.

Coaching: A-

Lisa Bluder only has 11 players on her roster this year and with Smith going down, she crafted some great lineups that forced Concordia to play small ball alongside of them, something that Iowa will have a great time doing this year.

Bluder kept her four’s in a good rotation and comfortable enough. Kali Peschel and Claire Till were subbed at great times and Bluder did a good job keeping players out of foul trouble.

Overall: B

There was definitely some rust in their opener, but overall the Hawkeyes played well and showed some real promise. If Till can be consistent in the non-center lineups, the Hawkeyes can force some real mis-matches. We’ll get to see more of it in a real game situation on Friday against UC-Riverside.

The Iowa women won their opening exhibition 92-68 against Concordia-St.Paul, but not without a few bumps in the road. The biggest bump for Iowa is the potential loss of Nicole Smith for an extended period of time.

Smith limped off the court after three minutes of play, she then was evaluated by a trainer on the sideline and escorted into the locker room to be evaluated by the team doctor.

“We had a doctor look at her and they felt she couldn’t go more today, she’s going to be further evaluated tomorrow,” Head Coach Lisa Bluder said about Smith’s injury.

Losing Smith could be huge blow to a Hawkeye team that without Smith has one true five and three converted fours. Bluder said that they “need” Smith on a team already without a lot of height.

Bluder was optimistic about some of the play she saw during the exhibition. Namely from the three different players they tried out at the four position.

“I thought Claire (Till) , Kali (Peschel) and Ally (Disterhoft) all brought something different today and I think that’s good for us.” Bluder said.

Disterhoft finished with 13 points, shooting 5-of-7 in her Hawkeye opener. Disterhoft had three basket-and-one opportunities this game. Which she said were part of the flow of the game and how comfortable she felt on the court.

The Iowa offense shared the ball extremely well today, with 26 assists on 36 made field goals, a number that Iowa will have to keep up to shoot well. Iowa finished the day 57 percent on field goals.

Other bumps in the road included some sloppy up-and-down the court play from the Hawkeyes early in the game. Iowa had eight turnovers in the first half, and most of those came in the middle of the court in the transition game.

The most impressive offensive performance of the day for Iowa was Bethany Doolittle, who finished with double the attempts of the next Hawkeye. Doolittle finished with 10-of-16 on field goals and 20 total points.

One of the biggest concerns coming into the season for Iowa was who would primarily rebound for Iowa. The answer today wasn’t very clear. Till ended up winning the rebounding battle with nine total rebounds, a stat that shows she’s ready to step up and play the five.

Bluder said it’s impressive that Till can lead in rebounding then step out and hit 2-of-3 on three-point field goals.

The game showed those few bumps, but nothing that can’t be fixed over the coming non-conference games.

Iowa will have their home opener against UC-Riverside on Friday, their opening game part of the Hawkeye Challenge.
