Elle King is truly the king of the seamless combination of country, soul, rock, and blues. Her new album, Love Stuff, is gaining friction, but Elle has been around a while. She has toured with Of Monsters and Men, Train, and others artists.

Her most popular song from this album is by far Ex’s and Oh’s, a feel good song that emulates “girl power”. Check out her music video below, with a whooping 16.6 million views, here:

Ex’s and Oh’s

Certain songs like Last Damn Night and Jackson absolutely scream pure rock. With up beat tempo and amazing guitar playing, it could make anyone want to start wearing a leather studded jacket and ride a motorcycle. I would say I Told You I Was Mean would fall into the category as well, but this song also has major elements of the blues. In this track, she definitely gives off Amy Winehouse and Adele vibes.

Elle King in Love Stuff shows her variety of genres she can pull off. Tracks like Kocaine Karolina, America’s Sweetheart, and Make You Smile all embody country music through the western lyrics and instruments used (Was that a banjo I heard Elle?). Song of Sorrow is definitely one of those songs that dance on the fine line between country and folk/indie, and it is absolutely working in her favor.

Ain’t Gonna Drown, the 9th track on Love Stuff, is a mix of all of these genres. I would argue it has a elements of southern gospel as well, because it is quite similar to the church song “Wade In The Water.” This track is earthy, passionate, and has a powerful sound that’ll make you close your eyes in content. Guaranteed.

The last song on the album is appropriately named See You Again and it acts as a beautiful and heartbroken farewell song. I think this is a great way to end a great album: a peaceful and solemn goodbye. The lyrics sound like poetry and the sound makes you want to go for a walk by a lake. Yeah. That good.

In all honesty, my absolute FAVORITE song from this album is her song Under The Influence. It reminds me of a James Bond track and it is never disappoints me as a confidence booster.

All in all, the album is terrific and I recommend it to anyone interested in alternative music. Check it out!

Impressive, right? I know. We at KRUI feel the same way.

She’s a raging feminist badass and a complete joy to talk to. Here’s what Jade had to say at our lunch/interview:

Was there a point in your life when you knew you wanted to be a social worker?

Honestly, it’s all I’ve known. I actually got started in 2001. My brother was in the army and he was recruited to go to Iraq. And at the time, I knew there was faulty information being fed to us about the war. I knew from the beginning we had absolutely no business there. While all of this was happening, I was working at the police station in Des Moines and I saw a lot of cases of sexual assault. It was hard for me to see that dark side of the world we live in today… and I think I have always know I wasn’t meant to sit in a cubicle somewhere. I wanted to help survivors, not work within the system like a hamster on a wheel. At this point in time, I started to think about the systemic causes of issues and the broader context of those issues we tend to not even think about.

Who is your biggest influence/inspiration when it comes to stances on social justice?

Wow, that’s a hard question. There is a lot of people! The person that helped me the most would have to be Ilima Young-Dunn. She is the Director of Human Services Program at DMACC (Des Moines Community College) and helped me figure out what I wanted to do, like the School of Social Work at the University of Iowa. I worked in this field before I got my education. Ilima opened my eyes into intersectionality.

How long have you been a TA?

It’s my first semester! I learned about the Gender and Society TA position through the Sociology Department… They needed someone to be a TA, so they opened it up to other departments. And this is a major topic of interest for me, so of course I jumped at the opportunity! In addition, I aspire to work in academia, so this was my way of getting my foot in the door.

How long have you known Professor Haylett?

She actually just moved here! I met her on the first day of class because the Department Head of Sociology does all of the hiring. So this whole experience was very new for her too! We automatically bonded because we both had purple in our hair and similar tattoos!

Talk to me about where you work and what that’s like.

Well currently, I am doing practice at the College of Laws in the Immigration Clinic. I help out in a course to teach things like interpersonal communication skills, etc. Doing actual immigration legal work. I help them realize their position of privilege and equip them with the knowledge and skills to build partnerships. I also work at the Hospital downtown. I help in the emergency section. Things like helping families in crisis, discharge planning (making sure they have family support at home), and things of that nature. Basically, if someone doesn’t know the answer to something, social workers figure it out! I also help out in the hospice department. And that is a different kind of crisis because you help prepare for a life without this person. And honestly, when someone is dying, all they want is to go home. I am honored to help people get home and to aid them in any way. I have to say, I never saw myself doing this… But I just love helping people!

I remember you mentioning you grew up on a farm. What was that like?

Well, I use the term “farm” loosely. We lived on 40 acres of land. We also had alfalfa, but the rest of the land was left completely untouched. There’s a lot of creeks and wildlife… It’s so beautiful out there. My mom also rehabilitated wildlife which we helped out with a lot. Trust me, it’s sounds great but when you have to wake up at the crack of dawn every morning to feed the animals, you aren’t thinking about their cuteness haha!

Did that teach you any important lessons that helped you later in life?

Oh definitely. Living on the farm really helped me connect with nature. And although I never really thought about it till now, I guess you could correlate caring for animals to helping humans. There is a lot of compassion involved in medical social work. It’s important to accept that death is a part of life and we should look beyond the stigma surrounding death. And I was exposed to death at a young age with the animals I worked with. I think it really helped with working with people. I have to admit, I am kind of oddly calm with death. Sometimes I think it freaks people out!

How has your family responded to your career path?

Well, my dad wishes I made more money haha, but as long as I am happy, my family is happy. I am the first in my family to go off to college, so I feel like I sometimes have an outsider’s perspective. I think there is a fine line between “we are proud of you!” and “don’t go and get a big head now!”

From auditioning on the famous television series, The Voice, to releasing her new album Cry Baby, Melanie Martinez is well on the road to musical success. I first discovered Melanie’s talent by stumbling upon her viral cover of “Toxic” by Britney Spears, where she is seen playing the guitar while hitting a tambourine between her feet. From there, she continued on season three of The Voice and is certainly making her voice known today in the alternative music industry.

According to Artist Direct, Melanie states this album is a reflection of her childhood. She identifies with the Cry Baby character because as a kid, she claims she took things very personally and that led to the nickname that stuck. This album, according to this interview, was about Melanie coming to terms with this imperfect side to herself; hence the ongoing theme of infancy and child-like toys/activities present in the album.

The track listing for the album includes 13 tracks for the standard edition and 3 more bonus songs for the deluxe edition (digital only), all released by Atlantic Records/Warner Music. The album is a follow up for her EP released in 2014 called Dollhouse, as well as the tracks Pity Party, Soap, and Sippy Cup released more closely to the album drop. Another huge milestone to Mel’s success would be her track, also featured on the album, called Carousel. With its haunting music undertone and Melanie’s incredible voice to match, it is no wonder it was featured in the FX hit show American Horror Story: Freak Show. Because of this, her music career took off and helped with the success of Cry Baby.

The first track on the album is called Cry Baby, fitting for the album that is called just that. It perfectly sets the mood for the rest of the songs while being a fun opener with an upbeat tempo and eerie sound (which she nails so well). The next preceding songs include, as previously mentioned, Dollhouse, which was the first music video she ever produced.

Track number three on the album called Sippy Cup slows down the tempo and keeps a calming mood to the ghostly theme of the song. This is seen in songs Mrs. Potato Head and Training Wheels as well, which seamlessly glides along with the rest of the album. Melanie Martinez also does an excellent job of boldly experimenting with different drops and beats. Her song Soap demonstrates this perfectly and if you listen to it, I guarantee you have not heard anything like this before.

Melanie’s music has a theme of hostility along with the eerie sound she is known for. If you are looking for a song to run to in the gym to get over a boy/girl, her songs Alphabet Boy, Milk and Cookies, and Pacify Her are a must. These tracks are basically a big “fuck you” to anyone who makes Miss Martinez feel small and for that Melanie, we thank you.

I wanted to save my two favorite songs on the album for last: Tag, You’re It and Mad Hatter. Admittedly, these two songs are probably the creepiest of the album but the concepts and beats are pure genius. Tag, You’re It is the tale of a little girl being abducted by a man in a van. Yeah. Creepy. But that’s what is making her music so alluring… no one else is doing what she is doing! And lastly, as an avid “Alice in Wonderland” fan, of course Mad Hatter is a personal favorite. It is a great track because Melanie admits and embraces her weird (and arguably insane) mind. If you listen to anything from this album, this would be the track I’d recommend.

After a night of binge-watching Disney Channel’s show Girl Meets World, I was pleasantly surprised with the inclusion of themes from the classic hit, Boy Meets World.

To make the show even better, I was informed by my good friend Callie that one of the main actresses is an intersectional feminist. The zinger? She’s only 14.

At age 14, I was too concerned with my Club Penguin account to see the importance of social justice. To have a young girl in the lime light being able to see the injustice of “white girl feminism” shows that society is moving in the right direction.

Rowan Blanchard uses her voice as a lovable young white female to advocate for women’s issues all across the board.”I have made a very big point at making sure my personal feminism includes everyone,” Rowan stated on Tumblr, “and educating myself and discussing these topics have really helped.”

When talking about intersectional feminism, it is important to keep in mind women have different identities that make up who they are. Those identities bring about different experiences and feminism is an inclusive ongoing conversation addressing these experiences and inequalities. Here’s an article by Everyday Feminism that takes a closer look!

“The way a black woman experiences sexism and inequality is different from the way a white woman experiences sexism and inequality,” she wrote, totally grasping concepts of intersectionality.

Blanchard further demonstrated the point on Tumblr with concrete examples of different issues women face. She mentions things like the wage gap, but makes sure to include women of color and trans women. She also acknowledges police brutality, an issue that many adults deny!

There is no denying that Rowan Blanchard is beyond her years. Go get ’em girl!
