Members of the KRUI marketing staff and SCOPE Productions teamed up on Friday, April 8th to bring excitement about the upcoming Decemberists concert to the Ped Mall. Musician Andrew Edmark and members of local band Aulos played their favorite Decemberists tunes, and passersby entered to win tickets to the show, as well as Decemberists merchandise.

Merchandise marketing is the process of creating awareness and customer loyalty using merchandise. By merchandise, we mean any tangible item such as t-shirts, thank-you cards, gift cards, flowers, a new sports car, etc. Merchandise marketing is a proven strategy and with any professional web development companies you can manage a good online marketing management promotion. For decades the company has purchased custom-printed items and given them away at tradeshows and events.

The Decemberists concert, presented by KRUI and SCOPE Productions, took place on Monday, April 18th in the IMU Main Lounge. Many more great events are on the way, so make sure to check back to the KRUI Event’s calendar to stay in the loop!

Nostalgic for the excess of the 1980’s? Tune in to The Lab every Sunday from 3:00 – 5:00 and let host Gregg Piper take you on a time warp to the decade of acid-wash jeans and Aquanet with his show, The Alternative Factor.

For Piper, the 1980’s were about one thing: fun.

“My audience is anyone who loves fun music,” he says. While he occasionally plays more obscure ‘80s groups like New Order and Depeche Mode, most of the tunes you’ll hear on the show are the lighthearted pop hits of the decade. “Every song has that certain feel to it that can only put you in a better mood than the one before,” says Piper.

To add even more ‘80s flair to the show, Piper includes sound bites from popular TV shows and commercials of the decade, so listeners can re-live the days of “Where’s the Beef?,” the Rubik’s Cube, and the Commodore VIC-20, an early version of the computer advertised by Star Trek’s own William Shatner. Piper also plays clips and trailers from hit movies like Star Wars, The Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles, to complete the ‘80s vibe. “With my show, you won’t need a ‘Hot Tub Time Machine’ or even a DeLorean car to bring back those days,” says Piper. “Just give a listen.”

By Brian Bockelman

Remember that snow storm back in February that brought a whopping 15 inches of snow and drifts as high as 15 feet in the Iowa City area? Well, Local Tunes hosts Jason Larson and Joe McGuire sure do, because they were walking through it. Determined to expose listeners to the talents of local musicians as they do every Tuesday night from 10 pm – 12 am, they trekked through the icy terrain of Iowa City to the studio.

If you love local music, or music in general for that matter, then you’ll love the Local Tunes program. Created by Jason Larson, Local Tunes is all about “supporting and promoting local music” and tries to get a different musical guest to come in every week. In fact, they have new guests so frequently that they’ve “lost count of the number of guests (they’ve) had in-studio or phone-in over the past two years,” says Jason. Besides local music, Local Tunes also plays the music of bands that are going to be playing shows in Iowa City, with home-roots stretching from coast to coast.

Along with live and phone-in interviews, Local Tunes have also had many live in-studio performances from local groups such as White Tornado, Johnny Oaahn Point, and Koplant No. They even had eight musicians from the Bloco Flocorico Afro Samba School come in and play an all acoustic performance on the air, one that Larson ranks among his most memorable performances.

Whether you want to get more in touch with the Iowa City music scene or just want to hear a band on the air that you know is coming through town soon, Local Tunes is where it’s at. Airing on Tuesday nights form 10 p.m. – 12 a.m., you can count on this determined duo to be bringing you local jams over the airwaves no matter what the elements may bring.
