Kids These Days, or KTD, a band still in a transitory albeit incredibly promising state, is taking the music scene by a charming spell. Performing at The Mill on the 25th of February, the heartening turnout proved that this band is definitely one to look out for as they continue to carve a name for themselves beyond the Midwest area. With a bunch of fans from Chicago evident for the night, many did not hesitate to give their support to this band from The Windy City and it doesn’t take long to
realize how these Chicago-breds have established themselves in their home city.

Chasing Shade, a local Iowa City band that is also quickly establishing itself in the local music scene, opened for the night and was warmly acknowledged and received. Their rendition of Justin Timberlake’s ‘What Goes Around Comes Around’ managed to set a fun mood as the crowd of students, grateful to be out celebrating life on a Friday, cheered and danced, buzzed by the prospect of a night of exciting live music.

However, the real winners of the night would no doubt be KTD. Being a young band in the same age group as the most of us, these kids reflect an impressive amount of gait as a collective whole and one wonders how they manage to weave together such a dynamic group in an oftentimes-fluid manner without any major hiccups along the way. With two horns, a blues-rock trio, a soulful female voice and a rapper, the possibility of evenly distributing parts and making it sound even is definitely worth a salute, impressive a feat as it is. Doubtless, a lot of practice has been invested; at times, the patchiness of the large number of people in the band is apparent but the end work, nevertheless, always manages to shine and is heavily appreciated by all listeners, allowing any minor glitches to pass for a band that’s achieved a lot (remember them from performing at Lollapalooza, anyone?) for its age.

Crowd-pleasers such as “Hard Times”. “Summerscent” and “Darling” were performed by the band. In a surprising turn, the band even sampled the music from The Pixies’ “Where Is My Mind?” as rapper Vic Mensa rapped to it. The crowd responded by enthusiastically waving their hands and singing parts they knew to the song.

The band’s strongest appeal is in managing to invoke a contagious amount of energy throughout the crowd. As everybody broke out dancing amidst the sound of blaring horns and Liam Cunningham’s blues-y singing, you can’t help but notice the big smiles and energy as sweaty strangers giddily acknowledged each other. The energy was pulsating, leading to the point of even crowdsurfing at one part.

Good company, good music, and good smiles were all abound as the strange concoction of jazz, blues, rap and youthful energy proved to be the chosen accompaniment of the night. it was certain that the overall mood of the night was sealed, and sealed by KTD it was, as everybody realized that got all they wanted for from a Friday night at the full worth of the affordable ticket price.

By Dolan Murphy

Facebook is too powerful. First I need a Facebook account to use Turntable.fm, then Spotify, and now I need one to see Neon Indian and Kreayshawn for free? To me, that seems to give a little too much power to a company with such a spotty privacy record. And, like everyone else who has seen The Social Network, Zuckerberg creeps me out. That said, let me take off my tin foil hat for a moment and talk about the show that brought you here.

Kreayshawn is most famous (well, really only famous) for “Gucci Gucci”, an addicting, M.I.A.-esque pop gem that earned her an MTV VMA nomination for Best New Artist. The video is up to 22 million views on Youtube, and the song has permeated both mainstream and alt culture in a short amount of time. It remains to be seen whether or not she’s a one-hit wonder, but Sony’s set to find out, after they signed Kreayshawn to a million-dollar deal earlier this year. The track also prompted Lil’ Wayne to release a freestyle over the track, in which he lobs a few gentle disses at Kreayshawn.

Neon Indian is arguably the most successful chillwave project to date, but still a Yeti-sized step from the mainstream. Mexican-born Alan Palomo put the Texas band together in 2008, and Neon Indian found blogospheric success quickly with an excellent EP and, later, LP, both called Psychic Chasms. They picked up steam in 2010, touring with Phoenix, hitting a series of summer festivals, and earning a “Best New Bands” nod from Rolling Stone. And they’ve had a busy 2011, too — first with a Flaming Lips collaboration, then with their second proper full-length, Era Extraña. They’ll kick off a college tour on the heels of Extraña on October 24th, here in Iowa City at Union Bar. Expect the crowd to be split between “Gucci Gucci” fans and Neon Indian fans.

Whether you’re a Neon Indian fan, Kreayshawn fan, or just a warmonger, this show is not to be missed. But to put the tin foil hat back on, the show is free for students if you have a Facebook account, are willing to “like” Dell Lounge on Facebook and sign up for their email list, and haven’t misplaced your student ID. If that’s you, get the process started HERE. Otherwise, you can pay $10 at the door (with your student ID), or pay for a $15-plus-fees GA ticket HERE. So, now you know. Your Facebook ‘like’ and email address are worth $10.

KRUI is proud to announce the ninth installment in the Low Frequency Series: the Night-People Records Showcase featuring Wet Hair and Peaking Lights, which will be held on Tuesday, October 18th at 9:00 PM at The Mill. This FREE show will showcase the work of the Iowa City-based record label, and will feature the sounds of some of Iowa City’s finest local talent.

Since 2003, Night-People Records has catered to the underground music connoisseurs of Iowa City and beyond. The label has released albums by everyone from the Washington-based band Lazer Zeppelin to rising South Dakota artist EMA, as well as some from international acts like the Australian noise-rock band Naked on the Vague and the minimalistic Danish group Eklin. The Night-People Records Showcase, however, will feature some of the label’s most promising local and regional acts. The show will be co-headlined by Peaking Lights, a lo-fi, electronic duo from Madison, Wisconsin, and Iowa City’s own Wet Hair, whose psychedelic sound has garnered its fair share of critical acclaim in recent years. The Showcase will also feature DJ sets by both Aaron Coyes, lead singer of Peaking Lights, and Shawn Reed, Wet Hair front man and Night-People founder, rounding out a night full of diverse, up-and-coming local sounds.

Aside from its diverse musical catalogue, one of the reasons for Night-People’s uniqueness is Reed’s ability to combine music and art into one very visually-appealing package. Each album or cassette tape the label sends out comes with a custom-made, hand-assembled label or cover, and Reed’s screen-printed T-shirts and prints are hot commodities on the label’s website. While the vast majority of its affordable merchandise is sold online, all of the vinyl and tapes the label currently stocks, as well as a variety of apparel items and screen-prints, will be available for sale at the Showcase.

Check out the Night-People Records Showcase at The Mill on October 18th for a free sampling of some of Iowa City’s finest musical acts, as well as an excellent opportunity to support the local music scene. Don’t miss this!

How many times has a band’s 15th album been one of their best? The answer is four. And one of them is Join Us, the new album by They Might Be Giants. Join Us finds John Flansburgh and John Linnell on a creative roll, making music that positively swarms with energy, invention, and an impeccable grasp of the miraculous synergy of words and music.

To understand where this artistry comes from, it helps to remember They Might Be Giants’ beginnings: as a key part of the early ’80s explosion of visual art, music, and performance art that put New York’s East Village on the cultural map. But while most cutting-edge rock at the time was bruising and nihilistic, the two Johns were making Dadaist, truly post-modern pop, forming a branch of underground music whose membership consisted entirely of themselves. “We’re fully aware of the musical worlds both to the left of us and to the right of us — we’ve heard avant garde music, we’ve heard popular music,” says Flansburgh. “That’s given us the notion that we can be as original as we can be and still make worthwhile songs.”

In 1990, They Might Be Giants created some of their greatest work just as alternative rock was cresting — and went platinum with the classic Flood. In the ensuing 20 years, they’ve become a beloved and fully diversified institution, conquering all media throughout the known universe, contributing to film and TV soundtracks, making hit DVDs, winning two Grammy awards, becoming Musical Ambassadors for International Space Year, appearing as cartoon characters, writing music for a robot ballet, topping the iTunes podcast charts, and being the subject of the acclaimed documentary Gigantic: A Tale of Two Johns. And now the very aptly titled Join Us.

They’ll be joining us on Sunday, October 30th as part of our Low Frequency Series. We hope to see you there!

CLASS ACTRESS is Elizabeth Harper. Some call her an indie Madonna. New York Magazine possibly said it best: “Unabashedly slick electro-pop beats juxtaposed with coy, romantically depressed vocals courtesy of star-in-the-making Elizabeth Harper.” She will stop through on her way back from SXSW, and will blow our minds with electro-vocal goodness. If you’re into Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Kate Nash, Lily Allen, Regina Spektor, Florence + The Machine, hell even Lady Gaga, you owe it to yourself to check out this set. She is not to be missed, and certainly not on an $8 ticket.

MILLIONYOUNG is Mike Diaz, from the burgeoning southern chillwave/balearic scene. He has released two EPs, and his debut full length entitled Replicants is out on Old Flame Records. If you’re into Neon Indian or Washed Out, this should be right up your alley. He’s on his way back from SXSW as well. Chill yourself out with some Wednesday night chillwave.

BODY is Alex Body, local psychedelia Night-Person. Body released no less than four records in 2010, and the last, Chief of Time and Frequency, was called “the best Iowa City has seen this year” by former KRUIer John Schlotfelt. He’s one of the best local musicians around, so get to Gabe’s early if you’ve never seen him before!
